Dixon

Is anyone else upset that he didn't quit when he knew he got hurt?

Granted, playing more led to more of an injury. However, being quite klumsy and injuring myself tons, you know when something is wrong with your body.

And I would think he would notice it more than others, being a trained athlete and knowing how his body works.

Oh, well. I suppose it could've been worse... He could've played soccer...

Dixon knew...
Dixon knew he had a torn ACL.  The doctors knew, and the coaches knew.  And Dixon wanted to play (he still had decent stability in his knee) and the doctors OKd it, with some stipulations, which were all met.

I don't know anyone that is upset with him wanting to play.  If we wanted to continue playing for a national title, we needed Dixon.  Not surprisingly, this didn't work out.  But his injury is not any worse than it was before the Arizona game.

People can gripe all they want about the decision, and think wishfully that we would have been better if Dixon or Bellotti pulled the plug, but we weren't gonna in out with Leaf, Kempt, or Roper playing.

We gambled for the national title game and lost.  Luckily, there was no extra damage done to Dixon.

Eh...I'm not mad at him
From what I hear there was little to no swelling and he could not only walk, but run on it with not much pain.

This is vastly different than my experience with a torn ACL. I tore mine playing high school football, and it was VERY swollen and I was having a hard time walking; the very idea of running on it hurt. Watching him jump around on the sidelines proves to me that people's reactions to a torn ACL must be different.

With that said, if I hadn't experienced any swelling, with not a lot of pain AND had a lot of mobility, playing for a National Title and a Heisman Trophy....well, let's just say I'm not mad at the kid, no. I'm a bit peeved at the doctors that told him that it could hold up to game-type intensity (although I was not in the room when they made recos). It wasn't a matter of him "knowing something was wrong," because they (Dixon, the medical staff, the coaching staff) KNEW it was torn...that's what MRIs are for.

I'm not a doctor so the above isn't exactly factual...but my opinion, from what I know and have heard, is that Dixon shouldn't be blamed for this.

Not really upset.
Hell, if anything it's been a bigger teaser knowing that he should have been a Junior this year. Anyways, he got the green light to play. The ACL typically doesn't heal itself - it takes surgery. Even if he didn't jump in at Arizona, it could have easily happened against UCLA or OSU.It's either

1. Out for season with an ACL minor
or
2. Chance to win the Heisman, National Championship, and beat three "soft" teams and risk an out for season with an ACL major.

Either way he would have been out for the season. The thing that really is at risk is sacrificing a round or two for the NFL.

Can't finish my thoughts, because of work, but I'll try to respond later

why would anyone be upset
its not as if he would have healed in time to save the season had he sat out. I give him lots of respect for playing.

Same here
It was either try playing in the next game or never play for U of O again.  At least he tried.  Didn't McNabb come back from the same injury?

by tominhawaii on Dec 3, 2007 1:43 PM PST up reply actions

Well
It's not that I don't have respect for the man - I have tons. He's an amazing player. And I'm not blaming him.  However, I'm worried more about his health than football. Just because someone says you can play doesn't mean that it's a good idea. I know it would've risked his season to quit while he was ahead. That type of injury, however, can be aggravated in the future, and he would've done better health wise to stop.

Did no one go to my link at the end of the above post?

Been down this road before already
I've already stated my opinions of both him and the coaching staff on this matter.

Here's what I want to know...Why the hell is he still practicing with the team?!?  I'm sorry Dennis, but if you aren't able to suit up and play in the Bowl Game, I don't want you taking a single snap away from one of our young guys.  Hearing Fouts gush on and on about what Dennis looked like in practice this last week got me all kinds of pissy.

Dan Fouts is a douche!

If Dennis is taking snaps...
That's pretty stupid.  However, I have not heard one mention of this up to this point.

I know he's helping out at practice, and helping out the youngsters, but I would be shocked if he was taking snaps during the regular flow of practice.

by jtlight on Dec 3, 2007 8:35 PM PST up reply actions

I heard (or interpreted) that MUCH differently
It sounded like Dixon was at practice in plain clothes, messing around, running and throwing some balls. Fouts noted that Bellotti asked him not to do it anymore, because it was depressing him. To me, it didn't sound  at all like he was taking snaps suited up in practice situations.

Fouts talked about it the whole game
Appparrently Bellotti told him to stop because it was depressing to see how good he looked despite the injury.

Case in point,
the UA game. He looked FANTASTIC in that game, then he just tried to juke, and one part of him went one way, the rest; the other. :( It's one of the tougher things I sometimes watch, when it comes on ESPN or something, or see it on youtube, it's just so heart-heavying. Dennis for Heisman anyway.

No Problems
He knew the risks and made his own decision.
