Nets behind the goal posts?
When did they put the nets back up behind the goal posts at Autzen? I thought for a couple years there they would kick the ball into the stands for PATS and Field Goals and then they had a guy down there making sure the fans through the ball back down to the field.
Now I see they have nets with "American Family Insurance" behind the posts. Am I crazy? Seems like everybody I talk to doesn't remember this and says the nets were always there.

I'm not crazy. Video proof!
Figured out a way to save my sanity.

Thought I could find some old footage of games and youtube had some. This one is from last years Cival War at Autzen stadium (2007). First part shows Ducks trying for a field goal, but you can’t see the end zone.
Now at exactly 1:01 in to the video you can see the Beavers going for a field go and it looks pretty clear that there is no net behind the goal posts.
I can’t believe everyone I talk to doesn’t remember this. I only go to 2 or 3 games a year at Autzen, but I’ve always thought it was so cool that we don’t have nets and the fan get to CATCH the ball on PATS and Field Goals. Like I said, I’d often watch after the play for the guy down there waiting and calling for the ball to be thrown back.
I was pretty surpised when this year I went and they had nets. Kinda fun way for the fans to participate. I’ve never seen another stadium do this.
Strange thing is everybody I talk to doesn’t even remember this (small but) great thing about Autzen.
"I can’t believe everyone I talk to doesn’t remember this."
They fucking nets!
ok I’ve been drinking, but still.
OK
I read more closely and I see your point, no nets is cool. Still who’s going to remember the nets?
No one.
I guess no one.
Thing is I’m usually tossed. I can’t believe I remembered. But as soon as they came up when I was there I was like WTF? So I went to the Moshofsky Center and drank for the rest of the game. :)
Just one of those fun things about Autzen. Now the man is coming down on us!
The nets have been there for ages...
but the net operators tended to be lazy and aloof in the past.

Story
The story I remember hearing back in the day, which may be one of the reasons I remember it, was they would stop using the nets and let the fans catch the balls/have a better view for field goals as long as the balls always got thrown back. If fans kept the balls they were going to start reusing the nets.
So maybe that’s why they are using the nets again or maybe someone spilled the vodka the snuck in all of themselves when they got hit by a ball or something.
nets
they have been there tonight was frustrating being in GA under duck vision and they left the net up after that last bruin td
The nets have been there for years....
But they just added advertisement this year.
As others have said, putting them up is hit or miss on field goals.

Replay of 2007 ASU game on TV tonight
The 2007 ASU – Oregon game is on TV tonight (ComcastNet). It’s still on right now and it’s most the way through the 3rd quarter and not a single net up that I have seen for any field goals or PATS. The first field goal ASU made in the 1st QTR you could see the fans in the lower end of the east endzone going for the football even.
So, hey, maybe it is just hit and miss with the nets. They have just missed them about 6 times so far.
It’s dumb really, but kind of a interesting part of Autzen if it’s true that the didn’t use nets for a few seasons.
