Masoli or Roper

I know Masoli had a statistically bad game (passing) against UCLA. However, I still think he should be starting, even with a healthy Roper. They've both basically played in 3 games with Masoli getting knocked out so early from the BSU game. Here's the stats for the year:

Passing Rushing
Att Comp Comp % TD Int Yards TD's Yards
Masoli 51 96 53.1 5 1 579   1 242
Roper 40 76 52.6 2 4 484   1 76

This suprised me. Even WITH the UCLA game, Masoli has better numbers in every category. The most glaring number to me is the TD/Int ratio. I'm reading comments about how we need Roper in there to compete against ASU/Cal/etc, but I disagree. I think the UCLA game was a combination of game plan because we knew we could run it down their throat, dropped passes, and Masoli's continued education into our offense.

Don't get me wrong, I like Roper. I think he's a pretty good QB. It just feels to me like I know exactly what I'm going to get from Roper...and I think the opponent does too. He may be more polished than Masoli, and he may know the offense better, but I think the potential that Masoli brings to the deep passing game (the TD pass to Harper was a great throw), combined with the serious threat of his running game makes him the starter. Teams are going to be respecting the keeper on the option now, and that's going to open things up that won't be open for Roper.

So, what does everyone think? Masoli or Roper for the start at ASU?

My vote is for Masoli

Great Post by the way! I am surprised Roper’s percentage is still less then Masoli since all he throws is short passes. Masoli bring two thing to our offense missing with Roper. The long pass and the QB run option. He just needs better descision making and I feel with our bye week its on Bellotti and Kelly to work with him on that! Roper just isn’t the best QB for this offense. I would even suggest Thomas over Roper because he has impressed me (and we coughed up this year so might as well use him some more).

Very interesting comparison

I have to admit; this made me rethink my position. I would have to disagree about the throw to Harper though. That was a great catch of an overthrown ball. He throws late and tries to make up for it with velocity. I’d like to see Masoli put more touch on an earlier released throw and let the receiver run to where the ball is falling.

by KWIGTS on Oct 13, 2008 11:12 AM PDT reply actions

Late

You’re right, that was late. And he does need to learn to put some touch on it….but I think Roper doesn’t even ATTEMPT that pass. Besides, chicks dig the long ball!

by qrsouther on Oct 13, 2008 6:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Kinda.

It’s stating that our QBs have performed better without Roper. Harper hasn’t had enough attempts for him to have a big impact.

Thomas has added a few TDs to the roster, while Harper has added a few INTs – but neither have a large enough sample size to have a major influence.

Roper has quite a bit. He’s had low completion percentage, and low yards per attempt, plus a few INTs. Prior to the UCLA game, Masoli had the same attempts as Roper. Masoli’s rating hasn’t really changed much from the UCLA game.

Ashamed, but I voted for Roper

I’m sorry, but we HAVE TO have a qb in there that can throw.

Masoli ran the read/option effectively Saturday. However, those shenanigans won’t work against the remaining schedule.

We have no pass game…therefore, opposing teams will determine—through extroardinary deductive reasoning, that we are going to R-U-N.

Forecast: More misery like we saw against Boise St. and USC unless we put in a qb that can throw.

And who’s that QB that can throw? I haven’t seen Roper do that yet.

Yeah...

Masoli still has much better stats that Roper. Yeah, things were pretty terrible on Saturday. But it’s like Roper was gone, and everyone forgets what we’ve seen from Roper…which is this: Nothing.

He has done nothing spectacular while he played. He has been average…maybe above average at time.

In terms of throwing, I still like Masoli cause he can throw downfield. Roper cannot.

Roper

You don’t think that the opposing teams will determine-through extraordinary deductive reasoning, that Roper won’t throw it more than 10 yards down field AND won’t r-u-n? The 2 TDs /4 INTs doesn’t scare you? Did you look at the stats above? I thought before I looked at the stats that Roper was our qb that can throw, but after thinking about the Purdue game and looking at the stats, I’m not feeling that way anymore. He’s been hurt for a few weeks now. After the Purdue game, did you want him to start against Boise St?

I like the yellow helmets!

by MarineCorpsDuck on Oct 13, 2008 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions

exactly what I was typing

their completion %, and yards per attempt are about the same so Masoli gives you less picks and a better running game. It ain’t a tough decision.

by bradLL99 on Oct 13, 2008 3:08 PM PDT up reply actions

eeks!

Those are good points marinecorpsduck and everyone else who ate my lunch…lol. Like I said, I was “ashamed” to admit it. I agree with many of your comments.

No, I have not forgotten Roper’s frustating weaknesses. But we have to pick our poison here. I think everyone would agree this was a great post “Masoli or Roper”. But if the answer if so obvious, why are we asking?

I think we are asking because, like Roper, Masoli presents some serious concerns. However, I can see by the poll that the overwhelming majority feel like Masoli’s the guy. I’m just not so convinced.

Both qb’s frustrate the heck out of me. But right now, I still take Roper’s 10-yard passes over Masoli’s 5 completions Saturday night…and yes, I’m still ashamed to admit it. The stats are helpful, but I don’t think tell the whole story. For example, how many times did SCal’s defense drop Masoli passes that should have been intercepted?

Good post! Good comments!

Have fun storming the castle!

"Both qb’s frustrate the heck out of me."

I gotta agree there – It’s hard to go from Dixon to this year, our QBs will get better with more time to practice. I would argue that given the physical limitations of Roper (arm strength and speed) Masoli has a better upside and should get more playing time to develop as a passer.

Yeah these stats don’t tell the whole story, I would argue that USC’s D was the best we faced and Roper didn’t have to face them, it’s be interesting if someone could adjust these stats for the D’s they were against (maybe when I finish my prelim). My guess is that if someone did that Masoli’s numbers would be better than Ropers (especially given Purdue’s craptastic play this season).

Drops, etc

My computer isn’t high-power enough to compute the drops of the Oregon receivers this year. I tried, but it started to smoke and I had to unplug it.

Maybe we need a 3rd option here:

3. Darron Thomas – Why the hell did we burn his redshirt again?

I like the yellow helmets!

by MarineCorpsDuck on Oct 13, 2008 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions

almost came back in that game

I don’t think it was a bad idea to burn his redshirt, especially if Harper ain’t going to be a QB we need 3 on our roster

by bradLL99 on Oct 13, 2008 7:32 PM PDT up reply actions

3 QB's

I agree we need 3 QB’s, but if he isn’t getting any more playing time this year? Dennis Dixon’s stats from 2004:

Att Comp Pct Yds TD Int Rating Att Yds Avg TD
2004 15 6 40.0 73 0 0 80.9 10 40 4.0 0

Some would argue that it was a waste. I just hope we don’t end up saying the same thing in 2012… “Damn, Thomas would be a Sr this year if he hadn’t played that 15 minutes against Boise State when we were down by 3 TD’s.” I think the coaches were in a bad spot in the BSU game and had to bring him in. That being said, his redshirt is gone and I’d like to see him get some experience if Masoli/Roper continue to mire in mediocrity.

I like the yellow helmets!

Thing is, that was a completely lost game and that was just a "see what he can do" scenario

This was an actual attempt to climb back against what was not the best team in the nation. We were down by 3 and a half touchdowns in Norman with entirely healthy yet unproductive QBs.

Thomas

Yep — I brought up this point during the game on Saturday. If Thomas does not see any more time this season, burning the redshirt was a terrible decision. That being said, I am not ready to concede this season, which I believe we would be doing by handing over the starting QB position to a true freshman. I want to see more of what Masoli can do.

by bradLL99 on Oct 13, 2008 10:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Really?

It’s not a bad decision to burn a redshirt in the 4th quarter of a game that we’re down by 24 points? As excited as I was to see him energize the offense in that quarter, if you remember, I was against the decision to bring him in exactly because I thought that game was already over. As I said then, the decision only makes sense if sees some meaningful playing time the rest of the year.

by bradLL99 on Oct 14, 2008 10:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Almost

Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. I still wouldn’t have celebrated it if he got no more PT this year. I would HATE to lose him for an entire year for one quarter of football, whether we won that game or not. If we’re going to use an entire year of his eligibility, I’d like to see him get in there for a series here and there so he can develop in game situations. Others may disagree, but that’s how I feel.

I like the yellow helmets!

by MarineCorpsDuck on Oct 14, 2008 10:09 AM PDT up reply actions

Almost

But we didn’t. With us down 24 points entering the fourth, I don’t think anyone was expecting (or even hoping) for Thomas to do what he did. That being said, I can imagine two thoughts entering Bellotti’s mind.

1) The game is over. Let’s put in Thomas and see if he can at least move the ball. This reasoning is fine under the conditions that Thomas would at least be in competition to get playing time. It has appeared that he has been buried in the depth chart again, and wasting his redshirt.

2) We still have a chance in this game if we put in a true freshman who has never played a down of D-1 football. If this was his thinking, then Thomas should have been pulled from his redshirt earlier in the game.

I think this game was over before they put in Thomas. The fact that they almost pulled off a miracle comeback does not have much bearing on the fact that I personally think it was a poor decision, given where Thomas currently is in the depth chart.

by ntrebon on Oct 14, 2008 10:10 AM PDT up reply actions

*hoping*

to clarify, I am sure we all hoped Thomas would do well, but to hope for the level of performance he actually provided probably wasn’t realistic.

by ntrebon on Oct 14, 2008 10:11 AM PDT up reply actions

I think we put him in

When we knew Harper wasn’t a viable #3 QB. We had a chance to win the game and we need 3 QBs to travel, his redshirt was going to be burned no matter what.

by bradLL99 on Oct 14, 2008 10:28 AM PDT up reply actions

Fine

I say that decision should have been made earlier then. If, however, the only reason he is not redshirting is because he is the third qb and won’t see anymore playing time, I would have rather rolled with Harper as 3rd string, viability be damned.

by ntrebon on Oct 14, 2008 10:31 AM PDT up reply actions

I do agree. He should have been in the game much earlier.

And I don’t think traveling impacts red shirt status. I’d need to look back in the bylaws. As long as he doesn’t play on the field during a game, he should still be a red shirt.

3rd QB

Couldn’t he have still traveled as #3 and retained his redshirt eligibility? Wasn’t that what Costa did last year prior to his injury? I mean, we could have kept him nominally as the 3rd string, but only played him if there was another catastrophic injury rash to QBs. Right?

Also, the injury must have occurred before the first game of the second half of the season. As far as I can tell, it occurred on October 30, which was after eight games. So, I don’t think he’d even be eligible for one last year.

They don't count...

Just found on Moseley’s blog from the Purdue trip that DT did travel while redshirting. So the redshirts count against the travel roster, but don’t lose redshirt status just because of traveling:

I found this blurb on another site as well:

Redshirt
The term “redshirt” applies to a student-athlete who does not represent the institution against outside competition and is not charged with a loss of a season of competition. During a “redshirt” year, a student-athlete may practice, receive aid, and travel with the team, but does not engage in outside competition.

Agreed.
We’re talking a very different story if that last TD pass didn’t happen. We’re looking at a tied score, and a very different situation.

I disagree with the assessment that they put in Thomas because the game was over. Post-game interviews, both Bellotti and Kelly said they were struggling with the idea of putting him in the game at the start of the 2nd half.

However, he needs more playing time. Unfortunately, our schedule isn’t going to be soft enough for us to get that chance, unless we really step up our game, and get some opportunities against Stanford, ASU, and UofA.

So…if he gets no more playing time this year, do you feel his redshirt has been wasted? Also, let’s say we had won that game, and he still doesn’t get more playing time, do you feel that is a waste of burning the redshirt?
