I know no one cares but

We may not be the biggest volleyball fans, nor talk it often, but any team representing our university well deserves front page recognition --Dave

The University of Oregon women's volleyball team is 7th in the country right now after beating UCLA and USC over the weekend who were the number 5 and 4 teams in the country.  To add their great weekend, junior outside hitter Sonja Newcombe was named Pac-10 player of the week.  I'm just saying that right now it might be more fun to watch the volleyball team compete for a national championship because we know that right now our football team has no chance.

The UCLA girls

are HUGE! My wife and I ate at Olive Garden Friday afternoon and the entire team walked out and every one of them was taller than me (that’s not saying much since I am only 5’9). If it comes down to watching athletes compete in tight pants/shorts, I will take volleyball girls ANY day!! GO DUCKS!

May we hand you your taints on a silver platter...

Yeah

My dad had to go through security to help my friend on his plane as he was an unaccompanied minor and they saw the lady-fUCLA Volleyball team. Apparently to add defeat to defeat, their plane was missing a part or something and their flight was cancelled.

I don’t know too much about it but this turnaround is extremely recent. I think last year people were really surprised at the turnaround. The current coach hasn’t been there for very long as I recall but when he took over the program, it was an instant turnaround

Coach Johnson is in his 2nd year

He’s a really nice guy and stuff, but the entire coaching staff and program as a whole has taken major criticism from players and parents alike.

you mean since the turnaround or previously? (or all of the above)

This year

What turnaround are you talking about? We were successful in… I think it was ‘06, that was Chris Miller’s last year. Coach Johnson took the reins in 07 and had a mediocre year. This year we’re 0-5 and 0-4 in games decided by a touchdown or less.

Don't get me wrong

I really like Coach Johnson, and I think that coaching can only do so much, we have had a very small turnout in the past few years. This year they had to combine JV and Varsity, and we still have only maybe 35 players on Varsity. Including Freshman team, the football program as a whole has maybe only 60 kids… it’s really sad. This is also not to mention the losses of Bo Lokombo and Charles Siddoway, the two top recruits in the state. But, hey, ya plays with whos ya gots.

Most kids at South choose to become track, cross country, crew, or ultimate frisbee stars.

I was also dissing on my own team.

South Eugene Frosh Axe 2008

  • Gresham 30, South 6
  • South 6, Oregon City 49
  • Thurston 36, South 0
  • South 6, Willamette 31
  • North Medford 57, South 13 (but I got my first successful PAT of the year!!)

Okay...I'm going to date myself

If it’s any consolation, my freshman year at South (1982…laugh it up) we were 1-8 with only a win over 0-9 Willamette. And we looked bad doing it. I mean, we really sucked. Couple seasons of hard work, maturity and better coaching – we went to the playoffs my junior and senior year on varsity.

You went to South way back when?!

Jesus it’s awesome having all these former axe here. Were you coached by Stokes by any chance?

Don't remember a Stokes

I played for Jim Denker. He had quite a bit of success. Got to the quarterfinals my soph. year, we made playoffs my junior and senior year and I know the class after me won at least one playoff game (that team included former Ducks Colin Hall – Rose Bowl center – and Gino Zahare [sp] a back up RB at one point I think). Denker probably made more of a name for himself coaching girl’s basketball…won a state championship or two.

Gorana Maricic and Katie Swoboda are studs

Good to see the volleyball team get some love. They are truly one of the better-kept secrets of Oregon sports. They made the NCAA Sweet 16 last year and look poised to go even further. Jim Moore is one hell of a program builder and I hope he sticks it out.

I, for one

was at the USC game Saturday instead of watching football (mostly because I have to be) and they absolutely DEmolished the #4 Trojans in a 3-0 sweep. It was incredible. So much more satisfying than watching us lose by 34 points in football.

I support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.

Very fun team

This team has a lot of weapons – very well balanced, lots of heart, lots of terrific athletes. If you’ve never seen a Pac-10 VB game, now’s the time! You owe it to yourself to see Katie S before she graduates – she is amazing. The league as a whole may be down just a little bit this year due to graduations (which might be hard to believe watching these teams play), but still very strong on the national level. Go Ducks!

by Flashduck on Oct 7, 2008 10:03 AM PDT reply actions

To add to their success

Sonja Newcombe was also just named national player of week to follow along with her Pac 10 POW.

Other intersting notes about Pac-10 vball in general

The Pac currently has 7 teams ranked 24th or higher.

Ducks and Beavs play October 12 and both are ranked—apparently first time this has ever happened.
