Jeremiah Masoli is a good Quarterback, and other observations
Caution: Extensive rant following.
I just wanted to have a post all for myself of all the things I want to tell everybody. Not just here, but to Ducks all around the blogosphere, to those who think someone died and made them the Duck football guru.
Jeremiah Masoli is a very good good quarterback. At least, at this point, he is adequate, and seemingly overachieving. He is a 5'11"... make that 5'10"... sophomore with no more experience on this team than I have of being a high schooler, or, say, JShuflunk has of being cool.
Justin Roper is also a good quarterback. But as it stands now, we have a healthy QB who is also well fit for our system. Chip knows who he wants in place. He knows what he wants to do, and is going to do, with the QB he is given. For this reason...
Chip Kelly is an excellent coach. With Chip at our offensive helm, we haven't the need to "play the hand we're dealt" despite, for the second consecutive row and the 3rd time in 4 years, having to play down to our 3rd string QB. Chip has completely sacrificed his preferred system, and comfort zone of playcalling, for the individual skills of each of these kids. The ability to mold an offense to strength is what determines a flexible coach. The ability to mold an offense toward strengths with success is what determines the best coaches.
J-Will is J-Will. We've known this for years now. J-Will gets open better than any receiver, against oftentimes the secondary's best CB. The drops are frustrating, we know. But it's a tradeoff. Less J-Will open = more coverage sacks (Masoli cannot scamper out of a capsizing pocket everytime.). Believe it or not, I am one of the biggest J-Will... haters... out there, but it's become a fact of Oregon football lately. I have coped with it by way of finding solace in Terence Scott.
Terence Scott is one of the biggest pleasant surprises we've had in a while. Of course, aside from the emergence of Dennis Lee Dixon, Jr., Terence Scott came absofuckinlutely out of the blue, and has become seemingly the only reliable target in our receiving corps, and sometimes in our entire offense. He's got quick enough feet for reverses, good enough hands for 3rd down plays, and seems to gladly take hits.
Jeff Maehl is a trooper. He's been quiet this year for a starting receiver, but so has the entire receiving unit. I have seen since his humble beginnings last year that he takes a LOT of hits, and gets right back up. He's not yet a playmaker, but man that's gotta be dejecting to lay a TJ Ward-like hit just to see the guy get up confident as ever.
TJ Ward is the biggest badass on defense this year. That's right P-Chung, Nick, WT3, J-Byrd... TJ Ward is among the most feared safeties in the Pac-10, and the biggest hat-layer in our defense for sure. Everyone else is doing their job as it should be, but TJ Ward makes the most out of EVERY opportunity. I miss Anthony Trucks, but TJ's picked that up for me.
You can chant Fire Alliotti from a mountaintop all you want, he isn't leaving until Bellotti is. Obviously everyone here and around has figured out Nick Alliotti is the weak link. He does less with more, and has the worst of all schemes to highlight a talented secondary. A secondary with no support is completely nullified of all competitive value. But yeah. We've all heard it enough. See Rob Moseley's latest blog, he captures it well.
Matt Evensen is best suited as a Kickoff specialist. He's got the leg strength, but Morgan Flint's got the accuracy. Seems to make sense to have him at KOS and Superman Flint doing the real kicking. It's sad, as a kicker myself, to see a Senior with such a successful career up until now to be unseated... but you gotta make the field goals man.
Does anyone have anything to disagree with me about? Better yet, would you like your face pummeled in?

At this point, Evensen’s accuracy is so bad that he seems to be booting kickoffs out of bounds, so he hardly even deserves that job

Tim Taylor for KOS
mostly cuz I’d love to yell:
“What time is it?”
“TOOL TIME!!!”
before every kickoff.

Is it just me or does being a "backup punter" just sound funny as hell?
Like, how much further down the food chain could you be?
I like my lineman with good footwork, good upper body strength, a nice wide base, and preferably not hungry.

it’s like backup catcher in baseball…though if you’re a major league backup catcher you’re making six figures to play once a week. cuuuuushy!

I was the backup kickoff guy junior year...
I played soccer and doubled as the kicking “specialist” for the varsity football team at my school. I had never kicked before and I was having confidence issues my junior year about 1/2 way through the season. I ended up being relegated to backup kickoff duties and then eventually backup placekicking duties. It was embarrassing being the backup kicker when I was called over from the soccer team to be THE guy.
Luckily I turned that around and turned in to the top kicker in our area my senior year. But I’ll tell ya…I was hurting.

I was the backup punter for the first week of the season
Until they realized the first string punter wasn’t good and I came in. One thing I learned from it: Freshman players on the most talented of teams can NOT catch punts…

Cool Thoughts
I haven’t been a fan of Evenson for a long time, really since his performance at Reser two years ago but that could just be me personally. I cringe every time he goes to kickoff because I know it is going out of bounds. I cringe ever time he lines up because I think “damn, another wasted opportunity”. This year, he started out great but really went down hill and I’m not sure what happend.
Evenson and J-Will appear to be two pees in a pod. J-Will also started out pretty good but he got the reputation of dropping balls at bad times. All receivers drop the ball sometimes but something about J-Will and dropping 1st downs at the worst possible times has been agonizing. I really don’t think he is as bad as he has been this year and his overall stats will show that when his time at Oregon is over. For all the grief he gets, he is a class guy and as much as it kills me when he drops the ball, I’m happy for his contribution to the receiving core and being a leader on the team. He has a chance in the final two games to turn it around somewhat and I think he will. See my “I Can Haz Football” J-will picture for inspiration.
I’m going to give Alliotti credit for the last 4 games. The defense has done a pretty good job overall, really since he limited the schemes they were trying to run at the beginning of the year. Fumbles and some special teams issues have put our defense in bad spots (normally on our side of the field) and it is hard to combat that. In those 4 games, there hasn’t been too many 80 yard drives for touchdowns and we’ve seemed to do better causing turnovers. I’m not saying we’re perfect, but 4 weeks ago I would have told you that we would have gotten destroyed by ASU’s passing game and taken apart by Cal. For Arizona? I’m actually optimistic. It may be misplaced but I’m happy with the strides being taken and Alliotti (and crew) recognizing issues that were there and at least willing to make steps to correct them, even if it is outside of their comfort zone

I only disagree on two points...
I can’t say Masoli is a good quarterback, not with those numbers. I can say that he could very well develop into a good quarterback. I like his attitude and his island-style toughness.
That, and I think Aliotti will not last the entire Belotti tenure. Mike B is paid more money than God to make tough decisions. At some point my crystal ball says he will make that call. I give NA another year, maybe two, then I think the Justin Wilcox era begins. Has anyone else noticed that BSU has given up a touchdown or less in 6 of their 9 games? Who cares who they’ve played, they’re giving up fewer points to mediocre teams than Oregon has the past couple seasons.

No animosity here
I wanted Masoli to start and finish the Stanford game. I want him to start the remaining games and keep getting better. I’m cool with this season. 8-4 would very good, I completely agree with you. And I’d love to see Masoli tear someone apart in a bowl game after weeks of prep like Roper did versus South Fla.
I just don’t think he’s good…yet. Getting there. I also don’t think Jake Locker is good. Fantastic athlete, but so far, not a good QB. T. Prichard…not good. The guy at UCLA…not good. The two guys I saw in tonight’s VaTech v. Miami, not only not good, actually both terrible. That used to be a good game? Jesus, those two teams looked awful.

Agree 100%
I think Masoli has potential and I am glad that Bellotti has stuck with him rather than revert to the two QB system. But, simply saying he is a very good QB does not make him a very good QB.

Love the post
My bad about the last one, cat walked on the keyboard. Anyways, its about time someone posted about the positives of this season! Personally, I’m tired of nothing but negatives. Lets go to Autzen on Sat, go ape shit for the new unis and a shot at the seniors finishing out their Autzen careers with a win, boo like hell at Stoops and Arizona, and hope we can pull out something special and maybe see a holiday bowl this season. Anyone else feeling optimistic?

Thank you. There’s definitely been a lot less of it here than in the comment section at Moseley, but still. We got what we were, for all intents and purposes, EXPECTING. It may be a different way of getting it, but what difference does it make?

Good post...
Disagree on one thing. TJ Ward has been a pleasant surprise, and is really laying it to people, but Nick Reed is the MVP of the defense (and probably team) this season. He is a freaking animal, and hasn’t made the mistakes the Ward did earlier in the season.

I didn't mean anything to take away from Nick Reed.
Easily the hardest working guy in the nation, very consistent… but we (or at least I) expected as much from him. A very good, reliable player.
All I was saying is that TJ Ward seems to be having a big influence on both the performance of our D and the performance of opposing receivers. Hard-hitting safeties often demote receivers to… well… J-Will…
