Ernie Kent doesn't believe in fouling (??)
This is the second consecutive loss to Oakland. Oakland. Once at Mac Court now.
And this is also two years in a row that Ernie has some sort of complex about not fouling with precious seconds left on the clock.
With some 48 seconds left on the clock, trailing by 3, Coach Kent elected to "play defense." That is, let them drain clock til there is close to nothing left.
So we let them bleed clock until, oh, 8 seconds, at which point they created a mismatch and their best player and shooter sank a little 10-foot jumper to put the game out of reach. Thus, we were left with a 5 point deficit and 8 seconds left. We ran down the floor, Tajuan forced a foul and sank 2 free throws, but it was already a two possession game. Didn't occur to you, huh Ernie?
I wasn't ever anti-Ernie until last year. I was actually the most pro-Ernie around for the prior few years. I sent angry emails to firecoachkent.com. And look, I understand that this is a young team, and Oakland is a veteran team... but when they're in the position that they need to get the ball back with MORE than 7 seconds, you need to give them some breathing room. The way Oakland was shooting free throws, I wouldn't have been at all surprised to see them split or even clank both at the charity stripe. You need. To stop. The clock. Ugh.
But maaaaaan... maybe Mark Few can put in place fundamental coaching when his time comes.

WTF
dude what happens if jones misses the shot, and the ducks hit a three? its a coin flip, personally i would have fouled at the 20 second mark, but still dude, young ass teams have growing pains, you can’t expect miracles this early in their careers, but you should expect a couple like this, as much as they hurt. I would expect ernie to have these guys challenging e very night in the pac ten come january, not freaking mark few

Ugh, Will...
Jones misses the shot, we have to run down the floor with some 5 or 6 seconds and hit a 3. And you bet your ass Tajuan is doubled. Is Garrett Sim the savior then? He made some nice 3s tonight, but you said it yourself, they’re young.
I am not blaming the players. The players did what they had to. But this is two years straight that I’ve seen this tendency of Coach Kent’s to let the clock bleed when it makes absolutely no sense.

dude shit happens
what happens if oregon makes the shot, ernie is a genius right? seriously cmon now, the ducks went almost 8 minutes without a bucket in the 2nd half, was that ernie’s fault? they ducks did what i would expect of them right now, too many mistakes to win a game like this. but i would also expect them to grow and mature over the course of the year, and because of that become much better. that turnover in ot by garrett sim? stupid, but he’ll learn how to swing it around to get to dunigin, it happens man, gotta learn patience with a young team….remember malik maarty and bryce’s first year? what about AB’s

Again, the players are not at fault dude.
And so what if Jones misses the shot? We still have to run down the court with 5 seconds left and toss up a desperation 3. You can’t coach the ball into the hoop. Garrett Sim or Tajuan or LeKendrick may look like heroes for making the game-tying 3, but I certainly don’t hail Ernie in that situation.

We lost this game because we gave up too many offensive rebounds....

Agreed
With the way Oakland was hitting free throws at the end of the game, really hard to tell what would have happened if Ernie would have fouled to extend the game. I remember a stretch of 5 hit free throws in the 4th, giving them some breathing room that we had to come back from. Oakland tightened up their D at halftime and you could really tell the intensity change. Oregon wasn’t adapting to it very well and it caused the drought and some bad turnovers. I need to read up more on Garrett Sim but he didn’t seem to have a very good night going 2-8 from the field (all 3’s) and having two critical turnovers.
Really tough, I can’t blame this one on Ernie. I think the Longmire injury changed the completion of the game as he was acting as a pretty important compliment to TP

I apologize
Like I said, this was a frustrated, pissed off post, but I am still staunch that it was a bad decision.

Ernie's doing fine.
I want only two things from this team this year. 1. Compete – bring effort every game. 2. Learn – absorb it all and get stronger from it.

I liked the decision
But really I think its a tossup. Its easy to make a judgement in retrospect. What I didn’t like was his management of time outs.

Alright, I apologize for the scathing anti-Ernie post
I posted it very impulsively last night when I was frustrated and tired.
But I stand by my opinion that it was a terrible coaching decision to let them bleed clock like that. I may have been unclear as to explaining it. It IS a young and inexperienced team. They DID make mistakes due to their youth, and I’m not holding that to them nor Ernie. But as I saw it, the players played their asses off to be let down by coaching in that final 41 seconds. The analogy I thought of went thusly:
A ship full of young seamen and their celebrated captain sailed a treacherous sea. Overcoming very dire straits and rough patches of the ocean, they were finally within eyeshot of land. The men cheered giddily, as their strenuous venture seemed to be coming to a delightful end. “We did it! Everyone on the mainland considered us too young and unwise to complete this trek, but we are no more than 3 salty miles from land”
cried the First Mate. At this point the captain had emerged to give his words to the men. He greeted them, then said “Alright boys, let’s drop anchor here.”
“But captain… it’s right there.”
“I know it is son. Halt the turbines. We will sit here until the tides carry us in.”
“But my captain, that simply doesn’t make se-”
And suddenly they were devoured by a giant JSquidfelt.

well he may be the greates in the histroy of our school
but seriously, Earnie Kent cannot coach. Especially over the last few years, we were loaded with talent and saw so little results it was nausiating. Hey, at least we made the NIT when we had Luke Jackson on our team, not like he was any good. Luke fucking Jackson, and we dont even make the tourny. I am aware that he can recruit, but he still cannot coach.

the coaches can only do so much
name one other major contributer from the LJ NIT team…..a coach cannot do everything for his team….neither can one PTPer….look at our elite 8 teams. loaded top to bottom with capable and aged contributers (with the exception of the lukes). Do us all a favor butthol, and wait to pass judgement on ernie and these players until they have time to develop, grow and mature. We should learn what expectations can do from the ones we piled on our last massive recruiting class. Conversely, what was aaron brooks rated coming out of high school…..

WILL. I AM GOING TO SAY IT FOR THE LAST TIME.
I AM NOT JUDGING THE PLAYERS. I have had to explain this to you so many times.
I know they are young. Who doesn’t. I’m saying, when they do so well to keep themselves in a game, it’s a shame to be let down by their coach as I’ve said above.
It is not about the players. Coaches can’t shoot the ball. Coaches can’t turn the ball over. What coaches can do is manage the clock.

Don't raise your voice when I'm message boarding to you and can't tell!
But seriously, Ernie Isn’t a very good coach, but that decision, at least to me, seemed like either way he would get eaten up by half of the fan base. I think the decisions with the time outs and the lack of an offensive game plan to fit our new squad were much more harmful.

Andre Joseph
He was pretty good, and James Davis wasn’t bad either. Should have made the tourney that year. Almost beat undefeated stanford that year, but let like a 20 point halftime lead evaporate.
