Texas locks up Will Muschamp as heir to Mack Brown

This was a brilliant move by Texas. Muschamp is going to be a very good coach right now, and will be a very good coach in the future. Coaches can't go forever, and I don't know why many would want to. Locking up stability in a program with a great coach waiting in the wings is the way to go. Granted, they have a lot of advantage by having an absolutely ridiculous budget to work with, but whatever.

I wouldn't be surprised if we saw something similar happen at Oregon in the next few years. I don't believe that Chip Kelly is ready to take over as the HC of a major program yet, but he has a lot of potential and is a very good football mind, and teacher, I believe. Oregon would do well to follow this path when Bellotti feels like moving on.

Good move.

Do you really think we could tie up Chip before someone else (Syracuse) lures him away?

I don't see anyone hiring him as an HC this year...

I think next year or the year after the offers start to come in.

And you think maybe we'll bind him to us by then?

This kind of think always makes me nervous. I immediately think of Arizona and the Lute Olsen fiasco

I am sure Chip won't mind.

The title of ‘coach in waiting’ is a good bargaining tool if it where to arise. But my question is, has MB given any hint as to when he might be stepping down?

No.

Because he is not.

He will be at some point...

Whether that is in 2 years, or 10, this is a great way to preserve stability, and hopefully get ahold of a good coach.

Well yeah, everyone's days are numbered

But I’m thinking more than 4 years. Maybe after Darron graduates? Hahaha.

Do you think Chip will want to stick around that long?

Plus what about Petersen? I know where he is right now and the fact that he hasn’t mentioned being interested but wouldn’t the Ducks want keep their options open? Since we are speaking in hypotheticals?

Chip himself says he doesn't know how long he'd like to stick around.

I recall him saying he doesn’t know if he’ll be here for 3 years, or 30.

I’m not sure I understand what your question is either…

One more year

Chip gets a huge $$$ offer from another school, and I think it’s going to take more than Phil Knight’s wallet and a “oh you’ll be the head coach here sometime” bit

Hell, who knows what a school like Auburn or Clemson might pull out their hats this year (if Tuberville is out at AU). Maybe even UT? It’s going to an interesting off-season for sure, with so many big programs needing new HCs.
