Blogpoll Roundtable: Potpourri Edition
Oh, another roundtable! This one is hosted by CollegeGameBalls, and takes a look around the general college football landscape. Also, I'm switching the order of the questions, as listed as the CGB site, because I want this first question before the jump. Let's get to it:
ESPN is aggressively bidding on the rights to the BCS when Fox’s contract expires after the 2009 season. My half baked theory is if they do win the rights they will push for a +1 system. Lucrative television deals have landed ESPN in bed with each of the BCS conferences. The revenue a playoff would generate could be a huge motivator for the four letter to be the common denominator and unifier among the conferences that finally helps them all to see the light of why a playoff would be good for college football. Help expand upon or debunk this theory.
Well, first, ESPN will be the TV network showing the BCS starting in 2011. Some have proclaimed this will stop a playoff. I think there is little logical basis for that conclusion. The main reason is that ESPN loves the bowls, as does everyone else making money off of that, and they won't want to see that end.
While that is true, I'm going with CollegeGameBalls on this one. ESPN will not want to stop the bowl system, but it will certainly want to extend the current system, and be able to broadcast more important (and moneymaking) football games. Thus, ESPN will be in a great position to push for a plus one (or even the top 8 teams going to their own playoff), and will do everything in its power to make this happen. It simply adds to their revenues, and in even greater degrees. ESPN the corporation is in this to make money, and a plus one system helps them out.
And this makes a playoff more likely. Let's face it, Fox sucks. They know jack crap about marketing college football. ESPN has been in the sporting business for a long time, and have done wonders with Monday Night Football. If they make the BCS even more profitable, and want a plus one because it's more profitable, the NCAA, corrupt and worthless as it is, will come around eventually. I don't think the bowl system will ever go away. I think that above average teams should have some type of reward, and the midlevel bowl games can provide just that. And the top level games can be expanded a little, making everyone money, and making us fans happy. Score one for capitalism.
By now everyone has heard that if there is a three way tie in the Big 12 South the highest ranked team in the BCS will play in the Big 12 Championship Game. That means the humans (66% of the BCS Poll) will determine the Big 12 South representative. Let’s assume Oklahoma sinks the pirate ship at home next week. Try to sway the pollsters by arguing which team you think should face off against the Big 12 North.

I'm gonna hafta go with Texas, barring a blowout in Oklahoma's favor this weekend. And the reason is simple, Texas is the only team that will have won a game against the other top 2 not at home. They beat Texas at home on a neutral site. They barely lost to Texas Tech, on the road. If Oklahoma wins, I think it shows just how important the home field advantage is, and Texas' win over Oklahoma is the most impressive, assuming all 3 teams finish 11-1. I also think they have the best defense of the other 2.
Rivalry week is around the corner. How do you think your team will fare? Feel free to talk a little or a lot of trash.
Uneasy. I am not looking forward to facing the Rodgers brothers. Jacquizz doesn't go down, and James is fricken fast. Oregon has had trouble with small backs all season long, and I have no reason to think that will improve. They have also had issues with sputtering offense. The Ducks have been explosive as hell, but have also faltered mightily, and put their defense in very bad positions. This almost cost Oregon two games, against Stanford and Arizona. If this continues against OSU, which has been great at ball control all season, that is a recipe for disaster.
Oregon could pull everything together, and has been improving, but I just have no idea what we'll see in 2 weeks.
And now for a little fun… Assemble your dream announcing team. Pick a play-by-play announcer, color commentator, sideline reporter and for the hell of it celebrity guest that drops on by.
Honestly, as long as the announcing team isn't ignorant or obnoxious,I don't usually care. I want to learn something every now and then, and not get annoyed. When the announcing team exists for itself, then it is a failure.
For the play-by-play, I gotta go Kieth Jackson ("Here comes Howry!"). Great voice, and when he was in his prime, he was very very good. For color, I don't know...Herbstriet? I haven't heard him all that much, but he seems to be doing a pretty good job. And I would have no sideline reporter, or celebrity guest. Screw them, they're annoying and fairly useless.

Bring back the old team!
Keith Jackson, Dan Fouts moves back to color, and well, Todd Harris always seemed like a good compliment to the other two. But if I had to make a switch, I’d put Craig Sager on the field in a bright, lightning yellow suit with a black shirt and green tie.
And yeah, Erin Andrews is obviously a gorgeous woman, but she makes me nervous when she’s down near my team’s sideline. I can’t see a bunch of 20-somethings not getting distracted. Yikes!

You are right. I was just subjected to some god awful movie with Ferris Bueller’s wife in it, you know, the woman with the shoe-horn face? (I will not dignify that goblin with a human name.) Anyway, she played the bestfriend and that was the only cool part of the movie.

I’d let her “take a bite outta this” (if you know what i mean, nudge-nudge, wink-wink, hoo-ah!) anytime but I just find it odd that there’s not a better option for ESPN. She’s just not worth my energy as far as lustful thoughts go… I mean, I’ve got my hands full with Selma Blair, Kelis, young Uma Thurman, Nadine Velazquez and that chick who played Michael Corleone’s wife in Italy—the one that gets nuked by the car bomb—in the first Godfather movie (but only frozen in that moment in time—I’m not down with old chicks in the slightest).

one of the most absurd things I have ever read
“ESPN has done wonders with MNF.” Sunday night football was UNBEARABLE, with Theisman, Maguire, and Mike Patrick…and MNF is only slightly more bearable with friggin Kornheiser in there. I do not like Joe Buck AT ALL, however, I find it hard to believe that he will not be better than whatever crew ESPN assigns to the BCS games.
Also, I hate that ESPN gets the BCS contract, as it will only give them more control over, and motivation to promote the SEC (who ESPN has a fat fat contract with). Now they will even moreso directly profit from using their influence to assure that the SEC is in the big BCS games.

MNF has made more money on ESPN than it would have on ABC or wherever else...
Also, the college football broadcast teams for ESPN/ABC are top notch.
Saying that ESPN promotes the SEC is blatantly ridiculous, considering that CBS has the big contract with the SEC, and has the SEC locked up for a long time.

Are you saying that ESPN doesn't promote the SEC?
seriously? Do you watch that channel? When Auburn fired their offensive coordinator it was the main story for like a whole day. Effing Auburn. Can you imagine if Cal fired their OC? it probably wouldn’t even make the news. In a season when the Big 12 is clearly the best conference, most of the analysts on that channel still say it is the mighty SEC. Just because CBS has the big contract doesn’t mean that ESPN doesn’t have a contract with them through, uh, 2023 I think. So no, it is not utterly ridiculous to say that.
ESPN hates on the PAC 10, so I will hate on ESPN.

ESPN doesn't hate on the Pac-10. They pretty much cover the stories.
They’ve been kissing OSU’s butt for the past couple weeks. They covered Auburn because that was a story. They would cover Cal cause it would be a story. ESPN pretty much covers the top teams, and shows their live coverage. They cover OSU and Texas Tech because they are fun stories. They cover, Florida, Oklahoma, USC, Texas, etc. because they are the big names. It’s not as much an “east coast bias” as an old boys bias.
But over the last few years, I think that ESPN and all the talking heads have done a good job of pushing for the top teams to be in the title game. I mean, when has ESPN even pushed for an SEC team in the title game unfairly? 1/2 the people were calling for Michigan over Florida in 2006, and last year LSU should have been in. This year, it should be an SEC versus Big 12 title game. I seriously do not see how any of this is unfair, or “promoting” the SEC into the title game. I mean, in 2001, most were saying that us or Colorado should have been in the title game over Nebraska (not even an SEC team).

well
2001 in irrelevant, because there was no SEC team in the mix. However I will add that I do not think its just the SEC that ESPN loves, but yes, the “old boys,” of which Nebraska is one. Last year LSU may have “belonged” in the title game, but really you could argue that any of the 2 loss teams, or even kansas “belonged” in the “championship” game.
In 2005 we went 10-1 and were excluded from a BCS game. That would never never happen to any SEC team. Or to any of those “old boys.” Same happened to Cal the year before. ESPN gave some coverage to the Cal shaft, but ours was almost entirely unmentioned.

Niether Cal or Oregon was screwed by ESPN out of an at-large birth.
Both teams were excluded due to contractual obligations by the BCS. In Oregon’s case, ND and OSU were given automatic slots due to their rankings. In Cal’s case, Texas got an automatic bid due to rankings. And that did not go “unmentioned.” Texas jumped Cal in one of the final polls due to some politicking by Mack Brown. That received a ton of coverage. And BCS at-large bids are besides the point anyway, because they have nothing to do with which team “deserves” it. They have to do with who will put the most butts in the seats and grab the most ratings, giving the most money to the bowl game. ESPN has and will have nothing to do with this process.
As for last year, LSU was, in my opinion, by far the most deserving team to play against OSU, but last year was a massive mess.
But really, I’m not really sure what your point is. Will the BCS become more skewed toward non-traditional teams? toward non Pac-10 teams? Will ESPN drive this? ESPN is in this for money. The point of all this originally wasn’t to talk about whether or not ESPN is biased. It was to talk about how ESPN will affect the BCS.
As I stated before, they have done wonders on the ratings and business aspect of MNF. Their broadcasting team isn’t the best, but the ESPN/ABC top college football guys are darn good. They know how to sell college football, and BCS ratings will most likely rise under ESPN, and will make a lot more money. And ESPN will not stand in the way of a plus one or similar system. They will most likely push for more games, that they will make more money on.
Will they have an affect on who gets picked? The way that the system is set up now, they have, at best, a marginal impact. But this is a reflection of the general attitude of college football in general, and the powers at be, and is not evidence of a bias against the Pac-10.

ESPN has EVERYTHING to do with the process of who gets picked, and who is ranked highly enough to get picked. ESPN is where almost everyone gets their sports coverage. That is where they see their highlights, and that it where they here analysis. This includes all the voters out there who make up the polls. Polls which were responsible for placing Texas and Notre Dame ahead of Cal and Oregon in ‘05 and ’05. Maybe Notre Dame wouldn’t have been ranked so high if ESPN and the media hadn’t devoted so freaking much attention to them.
Yes, ESPN is in it to make money. They can sell the SEC among other teams better than they can sell the Pac 10, so they stand to profit from having those teams play in the high profile games. Especially when they are covering those games.

...
First of all, Notre Dame wasn’t ranked ahead of Oregon in and polls. They were ranked higher because they weren’t a bad team, and because they lost a very close game to USC, that they probably should have won. At that point in time, they deserved that ranking. But they got an at-large bid because of how the BCS is set up. And Ohio State was a better team than Oregon that year, was ranked higher, and deservedly so.
The Texas/Cal debate was one that could have gone either way. The rankings had NOTHING to do with ESPN. They had to do with that fact that these were both very good teams, and Texas is a bigger name and had a coach that lobbied behind the scenes for the BCS bid.
I mean, lets take a step back during these times. What was going on. The controversy was being covered! ESPN had people on both sides saying that Cal should get in, or Texas should get in. They had zero to do with who was ranked higher.
I mean, name one time in recent years where ESPN has driven who has landed BCS bids. Just because a Pac-10 team has been screwed in the past does not mean that ESPN had anything to do with it. I mean, look at last year, where the big bad media giant had NO SAY over an ESPN/ABC broadcast game, the Rose Bowl. Illinois got in, to almost everyone’s objections, and the game sucked, and wasn’t watched by a majority of the country. ESPN didn’t want that, and has been pretty consistent in wanting to get the best teams to play, which includes Pac-10 teams, especially last year, when they showered Oregon with praise and attention and went out of their way to broadcast the ASU game, jumping through a million hoops set up by the Pac-10.
I mean, yes, any coverage is going to have an impact. That’s the nature of reporting in general. ESPN, or whatever company that reports in any area, is going to report on the big topics, and the already big topics (or institutions) gain more power.
But the impact of ESPN on the actual rankings is pretty darn insignificant, especially when you get down to the top 10 or so. The BCS is general is a giant clusterfuck, which is why there are so many problems. But I seriously don’t see any correlation or proof that ties ESPN and these problems together. This type of argument is very unsubstantiated.
