Men's Basketball: Ducks: 82, Beacons: 56
Editors note: AtQ reader everett wrote a great piece on the recent Oregon Basketball exhibition game. It's quite detailed and long, covering the team, as well as all individual players. Check out the whole piece after the jump.
The Ducks played the powerful force known as the Northwest Christian University Beacons in their first exhibition game of the season. I had the pleasure to be there, and thought I might share my reactions.
The Bad
The ducks came out flat-footed, and clunky. they made NCU look like Gonzaga in the first half. At one point the Beacons were up 14-7, and the score was 30-25 in favor of the Ducks at the end of the first half in which the Ducks shot 12/32. Worse, the Ducks were out-rebounded 39-38. Ouch.

On offense, the Ducks were out of sync at times and just plain atrocious at others. They had trouble executing plays, passes were made for cuts that never happened, and there was maybe three successful screens set all night.
It is clear that the defensive issues they had last year have not been settled in the off-season; TP didn't have the strength to stop their bigger point guard, and Brown was not quick enough laterally to be effective against their smaller guard. There is no real center on this team; the Ducks are not a big team, and while that didn't play a big role tonight, no doubt it will in the future as we play teams with aggressive centers who can score.
Oh yeah... Did I mention that 8 out of the 15 guys ion the bench tonight were Freshman?
The Good
After a 5-0 run by the beacons, to start the second half by tying the game at thirty, the Ducks decided to start playing some basketball. Now, NCU is no basketball powerhouse, but at this point (I and the rest of Mac Court) was ready for any sign of life; the boys delivered.
The Ducks shot 20/30 from the floor in the second half which was a relief; there was offensive execution, and more times than not plays ended in points. Defensively they played much more effectively in the second half, and were able to frustrate the Beacons offense with double teams that often resulted in steals or blocked shots.
Surprisingly the Freshman stole the show. TP dazzled the crowd with some pretty threes toward the end of the game, but it was the youngins that garnered the most applause. There was not one of them that looked Pac-10 ready, but I was impressed by their athleticism, and willingness to make the game happen.
Veterans:
Catron:
The clear leader of the team. In warmups, Catron appeared to be the only player having fun. On the floor he played with a confidence and swagger that carried the team at times. He is still the same old Catron with the ball in his hands: sort of clumsy, but his willingness to take a shot is always nice.
Porter:
The little guy looked really good once he got his thing going tonight. He a few stop-and-pop plays tonight that reminded me of 06-07 Porter. His shot is not going to be a problem. Defensively Porter is going to have the same difficulties he has had in the past; he is not big enough to really challenge a shot, and he was even getting beat on crossovers tonight.
Brown:
Lackluster. That would be my one word description of browns play tonight. He didn't look bad, he just didn't look good. he was not looking to penetrate with the ball in his hand, and was not moving effectively off the ball. Notably, Brown got the start at point guard while TP was initially in as the 2. I know he played a lot of PG last year, but I was surprised to see him get the start.
Dorsainnvil:
My pick for performance of the night. 10 points and 5 rebounds in 11 minutes. He had trouble with fouls as usual, and he played against a midget, but it was nice to see him show up anyway. He has gained some moxie in the offseason, and if I'm not mistaken about 15 pounds of muscle as well; he was big last season, but looked outright huge tonight.
Odia:
Same ol' Odia tonight. Consistent yet unremarkable, Odia should be a big part of our offense this year, and I'm sure he should average more than 1.8 ppg.
Longmire:
Not what I expected out of Longmire. I told my wife prior to the game that I thought he would be the leading scorer tonight; perhaps almost completely as a result of my high expectations, Longmire was unimpressive. That being said he played aggresively, and confidently, so we'll see.
Voogd:
It was good to see Ben play a little tonight, but I don't see him playing a huge role this season.
Freshman:
Michael Dunigan:
Earlier I said that there is no real center on this team, and no doubt you will say "how bout Dunigan?" Well, at 6-10 he's the biggest thing we got; unfortunately he is r-a-w. Dunigan looked like he has the ability to live up to his hype, but he is not there yet. He was often sloppy on D, picking up wholly unnecessary fouls, but he was also fairly dominant at times blocking one shot about 5 rows up. Be excited, but patient with this one.
Crittle:
The other "center." He may have played C in high school, but not at this level; I just don't see it, he's not big enough. Crittle played a little cleaner than Dunigan, and I think that the two will be a great big combo at some point down the road. He was fairly effective with the ball in his hand, and defensively he was dominant (again, we were playing midgets). He is pretty deep on the depth chart for now, but I think he will still get some minutes.
Humphrey:
The third Mean Streets guy, Humphrey was the only player who was notable in the first half. He showed range and control hitting back to back threes, and I thought for just a minute he was going to take the game over. He didn't. Still, Humphrey could see quite a few minutes this season as the fourth or fifth guard.
Williams:
Perhaps the most obvious feature of our team, as evidenced by tonight's game, is that we are really loaded with mid-level talent at the two. Williams, good as he is, is going to have to play the high post (as he did most of the night) to be a productive part of this team. He shot the ball well, and showed some toughness slashing with out the ball in his hands.
Sim:
Of the Freshman getting significant minutes tonight Sim was the least impressive. He was ineffective with the ball in his hands, and had trouble distributing the ball to his team.
So... Thats it. I think it is gonna be a fun season. Thanks for reading. Goodnight.

Great Review
I was annoyed that I couldn’t find the game on the radio and only caught snippets from the TV. I was worried when I looked at the media guide and saw that we have somewhere around 8 guards on the team? I know Dunigan is the only one listed at center. Unless Ernie plans on us being a run and gun style of team, this could be a tough year. Anyone down on the block is going to have some easy pickings on us

Aren't Ernie's teams always run and gun?
There have been teams that ran more halfcourt sets than others, but run-n-gun seems like the Kent philosophy.

Thanks for the review...
It sounds like patience is going to be the word of the year with this team. That said, even if we have to endure a Wazzu-football kind of year (versus UW, who have zero hope whatsoever), we can do so with some degree of optimism. After all, we still play Oregon State Community College twice.

it might be more up for grabs this year with us being so young and a new coaching philosophy

recap
I was at the game too. Yes, I acknowledge that we have some growing up to do, but I believe we will be middle of the road with chances to compete in some big games. While, last night was the first game of year, we did look rusty. We looked like a team who has not played together significantly before, which is totally true. Catron and Porter being the only players who have significant experience, which means the later the season gets the better we will become, which is a good thing to ask for. I really like TP at the 2 guard because he more of a shooter/scorer than a true point. Whether it be Sim or Brown the better those guys become the better TP and the rest of the team will be because lets face it TP is our most dynamic player right now.
The freshman are going to be good they are just very RAW. Humphrey and Dunnigan will see a good amount of time and will contribute this year. Humphrey has a nice looking shot and proved last night if you leave him open he will make the 3. Dunnigan just needs to adjust to the speed of the game and take the opportunities he will get. He took some good shots last night that just didn’t fall. Most likely nerves.
Like the past Oregon teams this team will be scary when it gets out in the open court and runs the floor, but our defense needs to step it up because missed shots will allow the team to get out in the open court and run. Also the Pac-10 as a league will be competitive as usual but UCLA, in my opinion, will be the best team again with ASU being scary. The rest of the Pac-10 is an a reloading/rebuilding year.
WSU-lost all their seniors.
UW-still have Brockman but no one else
UA-bad situation right now with coaching but still have Budinger, Nic Wise and Jordan Hill
OSU-still bad
Cal-new coach and lost Anderson
Stanford-new coach and no more Lopez brothers
UO-new group of guys
We very well may finish third but I think it is not too far out of reach to finish in the top 5 of the Pac.

No doubt that top five is possible.
But there are so many variables it is hugely uncertain.
My post was not intended to be negative, but rather just objective. I am excited about the new guys as much as anyone. Dunnigan could be really good I think.
I don’t agree that Sim is really competing for a top spot right now, but time will tell; Brown seems like the obvious choice to get the nod because he had a fairly good season last year. Sim seems really deep on the depth chart at least at the outset. I think that you may be right that TP will go as a 2 on the offensive side, but really both TP and Brown are combo guards, so its probably only a technicality.

Thank you very much for the writeup
Just what I was expecting from a young team… hiccups and very slow start… but hey it’s a bunch of freshmen. Our football and basketball teams are both in rebuilding…

Dunigan will be good
I honestly thought a lot of his troubles came from the lack of height of the other teams “C”. There was no post game to be played, especially on D. I want to see what he can do with someone his size.
Agree that our depth at the 4/5 is scary
Williams looked exciting, he and Humphrey will be fun in a while.

Yeah, NCU tallest guy was 6'5" or so.
There were times when it looked like doth Dunnigan and Dorsenvail looked like they had no clue what to do with those little guys.

Lineup?
What was the starting lineup for the ducks? My guess: Brown, TP, Humphrey, Catron, Dunnigan. I’m new here, but I’m a transplanted duck fan from eugene living in evil uw-friendly seattle now, so i think i’ll be checking in here often. Thanks!

stop stealing my comments!
i really like teondre williams btw, he looks impressive in person and i hope he gets minutes. I’m completely ok with a bottom five in the Pac season, but with the rooks getting minutes and looking way better than they do now. We should be shooting for 2010-2011 as the season we make a deep tourney run, cuz i don’t see us winning a bunch this year. I hope we do, my expectations just aren’t that high
I support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.

But geeeeez, last year’s starting 5, for as bad as our team turned out to be, at least they looked purty.

time to rebuild
On the way to the game…I was talking with my friend about who is actually still on the team that has seen ANY playing time other than TP and the JWill of bball, Catron. Sadly, we couldn’t think of anyone.
We had a couple of really great seasons and it’s time to basically start from sratch. That game was just a reminder on how young our Ducks (and the rest of the Pac for that matter) are this year and how they have a long way to go to get back in to peak form.
Two big things that need working on: rebounding and finishing on a drive….I don’t know how many times that Franz went for the hoop and couldn’t finish…. then the ball was in the air but none of our munchkins could reach it.
My Prediction: top half of Pac-10, maybe a fun tourney run in LA but this is going to be a slow year
