Open Thread: Oregon vs. Alabama @ Maui Invitational

Time: 9:00 p.m. PST (approximately)
Place: Lahaina Civic Center in Lahaina, Hawaii
Telecast: ESPN2

The Oregon men's basketball team will take on Alabama tonight (it's actually happening at the time of this post, but my Internet connection has been out for the past hour) in the first round of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational. In its 25th edition, the event features three top-8 teams, including the unanimous No. 1 Tarheels from the University of North Carolina (who the Ducks will have the pleasure of taking on tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. PST with a win over the Crimson Tide tonight).

I'll be commenting on this post throughout the first half, so if you're out there watching it, join me!

Also, the Ducks are rocking some brand new unis for the tourney, complete with new Nike kicks!

GO DUCKS!

I was just going to put this up. I was watching it, and like, hey, I should have put a game thread up.

Thanks! Glad I hit refresh.

My stupid Internet connection has been dwindling for the past hour! I would have had this up like 45 minutes ago.

I hate Comcast!

Uniforms

Okay, let’s get some thoughts on these bad boys. I’m on the fence, and need some coaxing and convincing.

well...

the shoes are pretty badass.

the unis...

eh….could be worse.

Ernie is pimping it tonight though.

Ernie is DEFINITELY pimpin’ it.

Jay Bilas is wrong

That does NOT have to be an intentional foul, just because the foul occurred on a fast break. Thoughts?

by PaulSF on Nov 24, 2008 9:20 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jay Bilas is a stupidhead.

That’s the only thing that comes to mind.

by grimc on Nov 24, 2008 9:24 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Initial thoughts...

This is the first I’ve seen of the team this year, and they look fast and athletic. Totally unpolished, but…they could surprise some people. They’ll definitely be fun to watch. And frustrating too.

Now, I’m off to bed. This is when Central Time is NOT a benefit. But DVR is great too.

GO DUCKS!

Is Matt Humphrey

the next Bryce Taylor?

discuss.

They've gone to plaid!

by gribbit1 on Nov 24, 2008 9:27 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think that’s a fair comparison, although I think Taylor had more talent. As I understand it, Humphrey is more of a shooter than a scorer.

by PaulSF on Nov 24, 2008 9:30 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think he could develop the drive.

I seem to remember Bryce being a little shy when he came in, too.

They've gone to plaid!

by gribbit1 on Nov 24, 2008 9:34 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think Taylor is a better athlete, but I could be wrong. Might be too early to tell.

by PaulSF on Nov 24, 2008 9:37 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And then a GREAT pass by Catron to Dunigan for a score.

by PaulSF on Nov 24, 2008 9:34 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And then a nice fast break layup for Catron. Ducks closing the gap!

by PaulSF on Nov 24, 2008 9:34 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dunigan needs to work on

earning the nickname “Dunkagain”. That should be the goal of his college career.

by grimc on Nov 24, 2008 9:35 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well, that pass from Sim helped him with his newly appointed goal.

These guys are cardiac kids… they look terrible, until they do something totally awesome.

That's the down side of Kent's style

Almost everybody has the green light to jack up threes

by grimc on Nov 24, 2008 9:41 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Down side?

I kind of look at it as an upside…D’Antoni-style!

by PaulSF on Nov 24, 2008 9:42 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I dunno

Time on the clock and Catron heaves one up makes baby jebus cry.

catron spincycle. i’m loving the intensity

by stone86 on Nov 24, 2008 10:09 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

First-half thoughts...

1. Catron has somehow transformed into a guard, “dribblin’ to ecstacy.”
2. We are ath-uh-let-ick. Period.
3. Where is Tajuan Porter? It appears ‘Bama is smothering him as far out as the time-line.
4. Dunigan brings a rare inside presence to this Oregon squad, and it’s showing. We’re still getting out-rebounded 15 to 13, but the size is opening up shots for everyone on the outside. We’re shooting 33% from behind the arc after a half.
5. Kent looks great in a Hawaiian shirt.

by PaulSF on Nov 24, 2008 10:09 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the play that really stands out as a sign of our potential was the sweet high-low

I can’t tell you how good it feels to have a halfway competent big man

by WoodburnDave on Nov 24, 2008 10:12 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No kidding. I can’t remember the last time we had an athletic big man like Dunigan. Christopherson? Not so much. Crosswhite? He was a better pot smoker than he was an athlete. Robert Johnson? Hardly. A.D. Smith? Maybe. But Dunigan is a 6’10" dynamic big man, something Kent has not yet seen.

by PaulSF on Nov 24, 2008 10:20 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

young teams are inconsistent

but we are starting to see the potential of these guys right now.

Dunigan = Man

I’m excited for this guy. He’s the real deal, at 6’10" with a lot of room for muscle.

by PaulSF on Nov 24, 2008 10:29 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Followed by a three by LeKendric. And the Ducks are up 13 all of a sudden.

this game is

very fun to watch. I didn’t like the refs calling all the fouls in the first half but is looking like it is helping us out more than Bama.

I am a bit concerned about TP

his start to the season has been putrid. 0-10. Yuk.

by WoodburnDave on Nov 24, 2008 10:44 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

agreed.

at this point you might want to sit him down. he is looking flustered tonight, and we need a stronger defensive presence..

and as soon as I say it he hits two in a row.

GREAT WIN!

Probably get our asses kicked by UNC tomorrow but it’ll be a good game for them to play…

Are they really talking about how much of a matchup problem Catron is for #1 North Carolina? Outstanding!
