Open Thread: Oregon vs. (1) North Carolina @ Maui Invitational
Time: 6:30 p.m. PST
Place: Lahaina Civic Center in Lahaina, Hawaii
TV: ESPN
Oregon advanced to the second round of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational with its 92-69 rout of Alabama last night. The Ducks will take on No. 1 North Carolina's unanimity tonight at 6:30 p.m. PST on ESPN.
Like last night, I'll be commenting on this post throughout the game if you want to join me!
Oregon's all-time record against the Tarheels is 0-3. I think it's time we change that, don't you?!
GO DUCKS!

Shock the World!!
Hopefully we see another great game out of Catron! Where did those handles come from? If Tujuan can get hot the Ducklings could give them a run for a bit.
Keys to the game
Here are my keys to the game:
- Control the tempo. If there’s one thing the Ducks need to do, it’s turn this into a track meet. Some would argue North Carolina’s athleticism will win out, but I can guarantee you if we play a half-court game with them, we automatically lose. Let’s run and gun and give America a show tonight!
- Get Tajuan involved early. TP has turned out to be one of the streakiest players in the country. When he’s hot, he’s on fire, and when he’s not, he’s ice cold. If there’s a way to get him in rhythm early, it could get him enough confidence on a national stage to get the entire team in rhythm.
- Crash the Boards. We’re heard this one a thousand times as Ducks fans, but there’s a big difference with this team. They actually outrebounded ‘Bama last night 35-33. With Dunigan, Crittle and Catron, this team has the ability to get physical on the boards with the best rebounding team in the country. And if they want to have a shot tonight, they’ll need to do just that.
And finally, they need to “dribble to ecstacy.” Don’t ask me what it means. Just trust me.
Dribblin' to ecstacy.
Going back to Oregon
Oregon has no chance at winning this game…sorry fellas. Im a Duck in every sport no matter who they are playing….BESIDES UNC. I have loved them since i can ever remember liking a sports team. Even without Psycho T the Heels have too much for the Ducks to handle.
Lawson, Ellington, Green, Thompson, Frasor, and Co. are too much for TP and Dunigan.
Good luck, but this should be a BLOW OUT!

As good of fans as we all want to be...
… I think we all could have told you that.
Alright time's up lez do this...
weak call
hansborough talked his way into getting that
Oh... this is gonna be one of those games...
…where the commentators stroke their weiners to Tyler Hansborough.
Alright time's up lez do this...
That’s every game, dude. I just don’t get it with Jay Bias, I mean Bilas. Didn’t he go to Duke? Isn’t it illegal for him to ever say anything nice about North Carolina?
Dribblin' to ecstacy.
Frankly, I think down by 11
counts as staying with them
No pointing fingers in this game.
Just overmatched. Make it respectable boys, just lose by 17 or less and I win 32 cents!
Alright time's up lez do this...
Danny Green is...
…4 for 5 from the 3-point line in the first 10:00 minutes. Are you kidding me?
Dribblin' to ecstacy.
Not at the game. Laptop in front of my TV. I’ll be heading for a bar shortly to drown my sorrows.
Dribblin' to ecstacy.
Ah alright.
I got the impression you were at the game for some reason.
Alright time's up lez do this...
of course not
its UNC they get everything!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This highlight reel of Tyler Hansborough getting pwned by Michael Dunigan
While the commentators still beat off to the image of Hansborough playing Texas pong or whatever the fuck it’s called, it’s getting annoying.

I hate Carolina with a passion unbrideled.
Sorry its not constructive but that is how I feel.
GO DUCKS!!!!
Is it just me or does Tajuan turn it over everytime he touches the ball?
Alright time's up lez do this...
Just turned on the game
What happened?

Just overmatched.
Not an implosion or anything… we’re just, you know, unpolished. And NC is, you know, polished.

Is Tyler Hansbrough the greatest player you want to hate but just can't?

I really don't have anything against him other than his Brian Urlacher-like propensity to try to ref the game.
And his tendency to give broadcasters hard-ons.

I can
hate him. I don’t like him at all. He is not very good at basketball; he just works hard..

yeah, he is good.
But he will cease to be good after this year. Everyone is saying he stayed to win a championship, rather he stayed to be famous for one more year before he disappears into obscurity.
I heart taxes.
Yeah I'm kind of under the impression that the Player of the Year is good
Is Nick Reed bad at football?

Funny you say that because I was just thinking of how much I like him.
Kind of Luke Jackson-like.
Alright time's up lez do this...
agree
thats what i heard. and want to think
granted this is the 1st time ive seen him in action and it was only for 3 min. just wasnt impressed by his stroke on those 2 shots and that he didn’t dive on that loose ball. i can only hope he turns into a luke jackson
Maybe TP should start the game
shooting 2s to get in a rhythm. Just sayin’.
TP shouldn't start any game
He’s far too streaky, and his wild shooting takes us out of games quickly. He’s a huge defensive liability. He’s better off as a 6th man coming off the bench. He’s a shooter, not a point. I would focus on developing Brown and riding out the ups and downs. Otherwise he’ll never get better.
Halftime: Key Stats
FG: UNC 51.6, Oregon 21.6%
Rebounds: UNC 27, Oregon 15
3PTs: UNC 6 for 13, Oregon 1 for 14
Dunigan 11 points, Rest of the Ducks 11 points

I think the majority of the people that read AtQ understand Kent’s a better recruiter than a game coach. At least I hope.

It will take a lot for me to turn on Ernie...
He’s made Oregon a player in the Pac-10, something unimaginable not too long ago. They were just as bad if not worse than the football team for a loooong time.
That said, he’s the Ron Zook of college basketball, and you know, I think we can live with that.

I can.
Until close games are made close losses by Ernie’s legendary game management :’(

Free throws, Free throws, Free throws.
This is what makes Ernie a troubling coach more than anything.
I still would take him over 90% of the coaches that Oregon could ever make a stab at.
I heart taxes.
Tough call
I would make an argument that even with the apparent success, overall he has been disappointing in the post-season.
Maybe though… I said 90% remember.
I heart taxes.
TP
I feel like TP’s shot looks a little bit different. Not just the fact that it isn’t going in, but his form is a little different. anybody else?
Hmm?
Do you mean the “dribble around and jack up a hasty off-balance three as soon as he’s across halfcourt” form? Looks like the same as last year’s to me…
I wonder...
Do we realize how much TP benefited from other teams sagging to help on Brooks’ drives to the hoop? I love the little guy for his effort, but I just don’t see him having the same impact the next couple years. But I will cheer my butt off for him. I’d love to be wrong.

Question to Oregon fans, not sarcasm, serious
I don’t watch enough Oregon bball to know, I just go by the expectations I see and what Oregon does..
Ernie Kent=Mike Bellotti? Great recruiter, poor game coach?
Oregon State: where play action defense and healthy QBs thrive
Mike Bellotti > Ernie Kent
In game coaching. I’d say Ernie Kent is a better recruiter, despite Bellotti being a very good recruiter himself.
Alright time's up lez do this...
Not exactly
Bellotti is a 1,000 times better game coach than Ernie will ever be. Ernie is a great “life” coach, i.e. getting his players to graduate, keeping the guys out of trouble, developing their character. And yes, he is a great recruiter. It blows my mind how he’s been able to recruit some of the players we’ve had to Oregon with the antique bball facilities (Luke Ridnour, Freddie Jones, Malik Hairston, Aaron Brooks, and now Michael Dunigan). But my opinion is set regarding his in-game coaching ability. Or lack thereof.
hahaha
Yeah, it does sound ridiculous, but I think it’s an accurate description of his pros and cons.
Yep you are right.
He gets good kids. He gets players for his system, which is maybe his greatest forte.
Alright time's up lez do this...
They've been talking about shirts
for quite a while.

domination
although UNC gets every call (which comes with being the #1 team in the land) Oregon just doesnt seem able to do much on offense. they just jack threes and hope they go down. to beat UNC you have to slow the game down and play your game, not theirs. the announcer said Kent talked to them about being men in the first half, but you cant play physical with UNC if you dont have the players to do it.
dunigan and catron are both good players though. they just happen to be playing against three better players in hansborough, thompson, and davis. they can still have a good year, UNC will be doing a lot blowing out of opponents all year so the team and fans shouldnt put their heads down.

Of course not.
This was expected. Nobody’s blaming this whole game on fouls. Yeah it was frustrating at first when it was in reach, but right now it’s just boys versus men.

Good God boy, when the heck to you get your homework done? BTW – your family’s hospitality at the tailgate was much appreciated. Same place next year for football ’09.

Researching all the info one would possibly need on Tanzania… wtf, I know.
And of course man, we enjoyed having you very much as well, can’t wait to meet your family too. Next year for sure.

Just don’t let him throw to the tight end and you should be fine. He makes good reads but we did a great job on him in the first half. Oh wait…

Frustration
Granted UNC is a much better team than we are right now, but what bothers me the most is when they get calls just because they are UNC or Hansborough. There were numerous times that we got fouls called on us that were no calls on the other end. It is just super frustrating when this happens. I am not saying it would have changed the outcome but when Dunigan picked up his first foul that play should have been a no call or at least a foul on Hansborough. It definitely should not have been an offensive foul. Plays like that and many others just make the game so frustrating to watch. Anyone else agree?
Joe
Awesome quote from Ernie in the Oregonian game summary...
“They were everything we thought they were.”
