Holiday Bowl Predictions
Editor's Note: Well, you got my cop-out preview, but it's gameday, so let's hear all your predictions. Reader 071903 posted his thoughts in a fanpost, and he'll start us out!
I have my own thoughts and Mosely has his own...
I think this game is going to be one of the more exciting games of the Bowl season and really have to congratulate the Holiday Bowl committee for choosing both teams. It has all of the characteristics of a bonafide shootout, and in my eyes, will not disappoint.
I feel that the scoreboard at the end of the game will show that the Ducks will win 58-45. I see JJ and Blount both over 100 yards rushing, two TD's a piece, Masoli will have a decent amount of rushing yards as well and throws for over 300 and a couple of scores. I see a Defense or Special Teams TD somewhere. Toss in three Morgan Flint FG and there you have it.
I think our Defense will perform better than expected (in some regards), meaning they will show up when they need to. I see Nick Reed, TJ Ward and Patrick Chung having impact plays for the Ducks. Reed and Chung could help their draft prospect with a good game here. The Offense will hurt the Defense like they have in the past few games by being efficient and keeping them on the field longer than they should. They will have their hands full, as everyone has said, with very good players at QB and WR. The OK St. RB has also run for over 1500 yards. There is a definite amount of firepower in the OK St. arsenal.
Over 80% of the people who voted on the winner according to ESPN's website have picked OK St. But Kirk Herbstreit has picked Oregon, and we know that we have had decent results in the past when Herbie is in our corner. (Editor's Note, Bruce Feldman, Todd McShay, and Scouts Inc. have all picked Oregon also)
Whatever the results, I am pretty happy with the results of the season. Obviously there are a few hiccups along the road, but we lost to two Top-10 teams, and another team who put up a good performance this season. We also know we are in good hands for the future and I am happy that we have locked up Chip Kelly and will also have Bellotti keeping his experience in the program.
GO DUCKS!

On balance, a very good year
I mean, after week 4, who would’ve believed that Oregon would end the season ranked higher than 4 of the top 10 (lsu, missouri, georgia, wisconsin) a third of the way into
the schedule?

The more I look at it....
….the more I like Oklahoma State. They went 9-3 in the best conference in the country, and I just don’t think our D will be able to stop their O. We’ll put up some points, but I think they win a shootout.

This game should be exciting...
No lead will be too big, and I could see this game swinging by 21 points easily. A mistake or two could lead to a large margin.
I think Oregon wins 51-40.

Band played at teh alumni rally...
And our team was more pumped up then I have ever seen them at one of these functions. Its not saying a whole lot but I think they look ready.
Dont know if this has made it to the interweb but Todd Doxey’s Mom gave MB at letter a few hours before the rally thanking the Oregon program for their support of their family and their late son. Really nice stuff, especially the $2000 donation they made to the football team. All the guys were talking about winning it for him, great motivator right there.

My feeling is
that their defense is better and faster than we all think it is. I know Jared hates arguments that aren’t supported by facts ( I have no facts…or anything to back up what I’m saying…and seldom do) but I’m willing to bet we are all going to take a step back when we see the difference in D’s tonight.

A sobering thought for sure...
A good thing to remember is that they have played in one of the most prolific offensive conferences of all time. They have 5 teams averaging over 40 points per game. OSU is 5th in the conference. They have 4 teams averaging over 7 yards per play. Oregon is the only Pac-10 team averaging over 40 points per game, and no team averages over 7 yards per play. OSU could come out, and playing against Oregon could seem easy after facing Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, and Missouri.
Another thing to consider is that the Big 12 has been very heavy on passing, which means a middle of the road pass defense like OSU will get taken advantage of a lot. Both defense are better than the paper, due to their own offensive success, as well as the quality of competition for OSU. At the same time, I don’t believe that OSU has faced a running attack like Oregon. If Oregon can pass the ball effectively (a la Arizona, or Oregon State), we should be OK.
But the strength of conference disparity this year is quite large, and many could be discounting the OSU defense.
Though we still hold the trump card with Chip Kelly. :D

Hopefully, Chung can go out with a pick and Williams can go out with at least 5 catches. Not to mention JJ ending his career with 100+ yards and the Oregon QB’s ending the season on a high note.

35-17
It seems to me that these games that get labeled a “shootout” weeks in advance hardly ever end up that way.
So, I’m calling it 35-17. It’ll be close until the 4th (maybe 14-all entering the period), when the Ducks break it open with a couple of big plays.

I think Oregon controls the lead for most of the game but the Cowboys stick around until about 5 minutes left. This should be a very entertaining game to watch.

Balance, ball control and a little defense. Just a little.
IMO those are the keys to an Oregon victory.
Achieving offensive balance late in the season – just enough passing game to open up a huge running game – had the Ducks making scoreboards in Eugene and Corvallis looking like pinball machines. The Ducks seem to have found their stride, and if they’re clicking out of the gate tonight another OSU in orange and black may suffer much the same fate as the last OSU in orange and black.
As for predictions: I like the Ducks for three rushing TDs. Masoli gets his 200 passing yards and finds the end zone twice. My crystal ball keeps telling me J-Will is going to finish his Oregon career on positive note (a couple big plays, some nice blocks downfield, maybe even a TD). Maehl and Scott both have an impact, though they are bottled up by an OSU team who comes in well prepared for Oregon’s new pet play – Masoli rolling to the sideline and throwing that kind of delayed bubble screen.
When OSU takes that play away, Chip looks for Ed Dickson in the middle of the field. And Ed has a very big game.
The Ducks score more than enough points to win. So it comes down to defense.
I’ve been one of loudest critics of Oregon’s defensive scheme and coaching. But this is no time to change the team’s basic defensive philosophy. When you’re facing the Big XII’s leading rusher – Kendall Hunter – AND the leading receiver – Dez Bryant – you stop the run first and make the other team beat you through the air.
Hunter (RB, #24) rushed for 1,518 and 14 TDs this season. Only Oklahoma and Texas A&M held him under the century mark this season. He also catches the ball out of the backfield, a look Oregon should be prepared for as OSU looks to defuse Oregon’s pass rush pressure. Keith Toston (RB, #5) will back up Hunter for 5 to 10 carries and isn’t much of a drop off.
Zac Robinson (QB, #11) threw for 2,735 and 24 TDs, with only 8 INTs. His favorite target is a rising star in sophomore Dez Bryant (WR, #1). An interesting take on Bryant…he is top shelf, no doubt, but he was held under 100 yards against Texas, Texas Tech and Oklahoma. He scored just 2 TDs in those three games. Oregon has the talent to at least contain Bryant to respectable numbers. He’ll have an impact, don’t get me wrong, but Oregon’s late-season formula for beating good teams did allow for one receiver having a big game (OSU – Stroughter, AZ – Gronkowski).
A wild card for Oklahoma State on offense? Watch for Brandon Pettigrew (TE, #87). He’s no Rob Gronkowski, but Pettigrew did catch 36 passes for 421 yards and would’ve stood out even more this season had he not missed four games early on. More important, he came up big as a playmaker against Texas (8-83) and Texas Tech (7-75). He doesn’t score TDs, but he keeps the Cowboys moving downfield.
More predictions: Facing the spread is no big deal for the Ducks. They do it every day. Oregon plays to its stengths by clamping down on the OSU running game and the Ducks continue to tackle well in space. Nick Reed makes his pressence felt, but the Oregon defense breaks a couple times, maybe a few times. Dez Bryant goes highlight reel on the Ducks, but Oregon turns OSU’s offense is mostly a one-man show.
Then there’s this to consider…
I do not want to overemphasize the Todd Doxey impact on this game. Just the same, it would be naive to ignore it. Members of Todd’s family have attended Holiday Bowl events this week, have spent time with players and coaches, and will attend the game. This is a showcase for the Oregon players – a chance for the entire program to once again pay their respects to the Doxey family while playing in Todd’s hometown of San Diego. This is far from a meaningless bowl game for the Ducks. Oregon will be emotional. Typicially, Oregon teams that are fueled by emotion are hard to beat. A hunger to win is often a huge factor in non-BCS bowl games. This time the Ducks have that hunger.
Oregon 41, OSU 31.

Momentum
I think momentum could play a huge part. We are playing well at the end of the season and riding a win streak. OSU got to 7-0, before losing 3 of their last 5. I’m sure a lot of their players feel like they could have gotten into a BCS game and are maybe disappointed with a Holiday Bowl. Sort of like what happened to us in ’06 when we went and got rolled in the Vegas Bowl because our players had seemingly packed it in for the winter. As JConant stated above, I think the Ducks seem to have more to play for.

GOOOO DUCKS.
Johnson is going to tear a hole in this defensive line. Its not even going to be close. Their line has 13 sacks for the entire season. And according to Bellotti they blitz 49% of the plays. So you can guarantee that Masoli is going to hit the slot cross for 6 yds for the first 4 plays of the game just right over the blitz. Then when the Cowboys step back to produce a tiny bit of coverage, Johnson hits their line for a breakaway touchdown.
They throw the ball to our secondary after they pick up an initial first down, and then it is all over, with Blount and Johnson brutalizing the line, screen passes when the Cowboys decide to stay home, and the ducks relying on the run for the big plays, and the pass for the first downs. This game is going to be complete and total destruction.
