Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Sarkisian UW Head Coach

Normally I would just do a FanShot, but thought this was worthy of a FanPost. ESPN is reporting that Steve Sarkisian is University of Washington's next head coach. Hopefully this weakens USC and then he turns out not to be a good head coach and UW keeps up the 0-12 seasons. Do you think this is a good hire for the Fuskies? Do you think that this will be a big hit to USC, or will they just keep rolling along?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or the Addicted To Quack Moderators. FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable Oregon fans.

Meh its Washington

They are in such a huge hole as a program its going to take awhile for any coach to bring them back. Steve, I’m sure, has what it takes to be a good coach at this level. Just don’t know how many guys can start as a HC at UW right now. USC will be fine, lame.

Steve Sarkisian runs a very pro-style offense...

Not sure if and how he’ll mold to Jake Locker.

Kicker.

by qrsouther on Dec 4, 2008 8:06 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ronnie Fouch

UW’s sophomore back-up, and starter while Locker was out, may be better suited for pro-style. Is he good enough to run it effectively? Yet to be seen. He certainly doesn’t have much talent around him to help him get it done. That, of course, is Washington’s real problem.

It will take Sark at least a couple years just to overcome poor recruiting during the Willingham era. USC, on the other won’t miss a beat having recruited boat-loads of blue chippers the past few years.

The bigger question, I think: Will Jake Locker remain a QB? With that athletic ability he could play a number of positions very well.

The ATQer formerly known as Seattle Quacker...oh yeah, I hate the wings.

by JConant on Dec 4, 2008 9:55 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I am sure he will remain at QB.

Though it would be one of the biggest shames of the past decade to waste a talent like Jake Locker in Sark’s offset I-form-laden offense.

If I were UW, I wouldn’t set the offense to their much less talented backup, I’d set it to Jake Locker. It only makes sense.

They are both sophomores, too.

pro-style offense

that was the first thing i thought of when i heard of sarkisian’s hiring. it’s been pretty successful at usc mainly because they have been able to recruit talented, true position players 4 deep in every slot. i am skeptical that he will be able to recruit as many blue chippers to fill the positions considering the state of football at uw. it will be interesting to follow to say the least.

by Chris in JC on Dec 5, 2008 2:14 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The real question is...

will he be able to recruit? He has a massive hole to get out of. If UW wants to compete where their fans think they should, it’s gonna take some good recruiting again. This is what a program sinks to with bad recruiting, and poor development of the talent that is there.

I’ve never been terribly impressed with Sarkisian’s offenses. He’s had a ridiculous amount of talent, but it never clicked like it did before him.

But really, who knows.

Agree fully with that last point

I’m not that impressed with Sarkisian. This just screams “safe hire”. Pat Hill was rumored to have been denied a second interview by the school; I think he’s a better choice and obviously a more dynamic personality.

USC offense

I was not impressed with the offense at all this year. If it wasent for that D they would have lost more than once this year. With all that talent and these backs that are all world. They cannot consistantly run the ball at all. Well at least put up big numbers in the run game.

by ducksfan on Dec 5, 2008 4:51 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

18th in the Nation

in rush offense. Not too shabby.

I’m thinking everyone is just used to seeing USC dominate most everyone, and when they have a “down” year we just cannot believe it.

But the 18th rushing offense in the Nation tells me they have run the ball effectively.

They do rack up the stats...

I am usually a stat man, but they just don’t seem to have…“it”. They don’t have the playmakers that they used to.

Is this lack of Reggie Bush type talent? I don’t know. But they don’t have (and haven’t had in a few years) a player that can take over a game like they had in 2005.

And...

13th in the nation in scoring. Only 3.5 points per game behind the Ducks.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/sortables?stat=team&sort=ppg&season=2&year=2008&group=80

I admit, I thought USC’s offense was sorry this year too, but it doesn’t appear to be so. I think we’re just used to seeing them blow everyone out, but now that I think back it seems like most games have been thirty-something to not-very-much.

Death before Dishonor.

by MarineCorpsDuck on Dec 5, 2008 10:29 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No, I agree. Not having “it” is a down year for USC. But they’re still head and shoulders above many.

I mean, they ran through all of their games—save Oregon State—and got the W, do have good stats (both offense and defense), and should be in a BCS game.

Yet, we’re talking about the Trojans as if they’d finally had a 3 or 4 lose season. lol

But I do agree with you guys.

Don't get me wrong.

Oh hell yes they should be in a BCS game. I love having USC in the pac-10. They are always top 5 and if you can beat them it give your program instant credibility. I think that with the defense that they have they would do well against any one of the top teams.

by ducksfan on Dec 5, 2008 12:12 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ok, Im wrong

Yeah I didnt look at the numbers. It just seems like with all the hype about the 6 or 7 all american caliber running backs that they have there are not alot of big time plays. Maybe I’m wrong about that. Maybe your right about everyone being use to seeing jaw droping plays out of USC. That really suprises me that they are only 3.5 ppg behind us.

by ducksfan on Dec 5, 2008 12:08 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But that's the thing...

I thought the same as you. And many others did too. Don’t think of it as being wrong, my friend. We were just mislead. lol

Just like the other guys said, it really does seem as though they had a “down” year.

I think jtlight hit right on the head: USC doesn’t seem to have that STAR player(s) this season, so it’s hard to physically see just the awesomeness.

Plus, I’m thinking with the Trojans being do deep talent-wise, they’ve really done well as spreading the plays out.

by Pac10Rivalry on Dec 5, 2008 1:44 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I knew their stats...

And I still think their offense is overrated.

Yes, they put up yards. But they also get a lot due to their defense. They only had 348 yards against Ohio State, and still won 35-3.

When push comes to shove, I just don’t see them pulling it together. They had chances in the Oregon State game, but were in a hole, and couldn’t come back. Oh, they had chances, but…their offense isn’t explosive as it used to be.

Dr. Saturday broke it down after the OSU loss, and I looked at what happened in their losses the last few years.

Their offense is very good, don’t get me wrong. But, due to their defense, they are rarely tested. The game is rarely put in their hands. They rarely have to make plays. And in recent years, and the only time this year, when agame was put in their hands off the offense, USC has lost.

Recruiting = #1 issue.

The #2 issue – who does he add to his staff?

Key coordinators will probably make or break Sarkisian at UW. He’s going to need some real rock stars. Danny Langsdorf from OSU as O-coordinator? Maybe he brings guys with him from USC?

The ATQer formerly known as Seattle Quacker...oh yeah, I hate the wings.

Pete Carol is what makes USC so good. He got the program to the top and keeps getting top level talent. Norm Chow was a great OC, but he didnt do well with the Titans and his offense has been awful at UCLA. If Sarkisisan does not find a way to use Jake Locker at QB I believe that is a huge mistake. If Locker was on our team he would have Tebow numbers. You make your offense work around Locker. I think that Pat Hill would have been a better hire, just I dont think that he is the flashy choise from a big school.

by ducksfan on Dec 5, 2008 4:47 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It hasn't been awful at UCLA...

It’s been one year, with 2 QBs injured to start the year, and a first-year JC transfer playing in Kevin Craft. Even through that, it hasn’t been underwhelming to me.

facilities

I think what will help with recruiting is that UW will upgrade it’s facilities. Don’t dismiss how important that has been to the Ducks.

As a Duck fan, I like the hire. Peterson (Boise), Chip, or Pat Hill might have gotten UW back to respectability. I hope they don’t get Wilcox to run the defense.

Imagine this: the 6, 8, 12 most deserving teams should have to go through some crazy system where they play each other in rounds at the end of the season. And if they lose, they are OUT They don’t pass GO! they don’t collect $200.

The two teams that put everything on the line just to win that one more game left standing, they would be the ones that are really deserving. I call it the “College Football Awesome Do-Or-Die National Championship System” or CFADODNCS – pronounced “Caf-a-dod-nicks”

Wilcox

He is also the son of former Duck/49er Dave Wilcox, who played at BSU before coming to Oregon.

PERSONAL: Wilcox, 28, was born Nov. 12, 1976 in Eugene, Ore. He earned his bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Oregon in 1999 and has been pursuing his master’s degree at Boise State. Wilcox, single and living in Berkeley, is the son of former San Francisco 49er and Oregon linebacker Dave Wilcox, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.

If Sarkisian is going to be the new HC, I bet they are waiting until after their Bowl Game to announce it…….wait……..ba-da-boom!

I think

it’s a decent hire. They get a young coach with a lot of energy to amp up the boosters. I do agree with everyone else. It’ll take probably at least three seasons before they are consistently competitive.
