First Bush Now O.J. Who's Next?

Is is possible for USC's stars to stay out of trouble? On ESPN's outside the lines it is revealed that O.J. Mayo recieved gifts and money from a booster. I wonder if the NCAA will take action, with these two high-profile violations at USC you'd think they would at least lose scholarships. Anyway this should help the ducks out.

I opened this expecting a different Bush and OJ.

lack of institutional control
the NCAA has to take away scholarships.  If they don't, they prove to be a total joke.

Nothing but crooks
They need to give the BBall team the death penalty for a few years and use them as an example of how a athletic department should not be run.

ummm....Death Penalty?
I'm sorry, but this death penalty to USC things is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.  I usually like Pat Forde, but his most recent column on this topic is absolutely ridiculous.

Does anyone who supports this nonsense have an ounce of perspective on the death penalty?  Please, go look at what SMU was doing, and for how long.  The school was actively involved in paying players, not just turning a blind eye, and was doing this WHILE ON PROBATION.  USC broke a lot of rules, but the two situations are not comparable in any way.

USC should have serious repercussions on what will most likely become a lack of institutional control issue.  Probation and loss of scholarships will not be unreasonable.  But the death penalty?  Give me a break.

the death penalty is a bit harsh
although if they don't start cutting their teeth, they are going to be faced with a situation soon where they seriously have to consider it on a major program.

Maybe...
But they are not even on probation now, which is more the fault of the NCAA than anyone else.  As high profile as the Bush thing was, it never resulted in any punishment to the school.  And as far as the NCAA is concerned, you can't use that against the school at this point.

Plus, this was also 2 different programs, so I don't know how that comes into play.  And which program do you give the death penalty to?

I don't think the death penalty will ever be used again, after how it utterly destroyed SMU football.  Probation, scholarship loss, etc. can be very harmful as well (look at Alabama).

I just really don't see USC as anywhere in the same ballpark as death penalty.  Even if it turns out that their entire basketball team was getting 7 figures, the NCAA would do anything they could to not give the death penalty.  If USC ignores any NCAA attempts at reform, then it could happen, but I don't see that happening.  The death penalty is a last resort, and USC hasn't had anything happen to them yet.

Oh, I don't see SC in the same ballpark either
but they've got to do more with Mayo then they did with Bush.

by David Piper on May 16, 2008 7:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes
Also, the Bush story is tough because of who exactly got the money.

With Mayo, Tim Floyd had a fairly close relationship with the guy who was giving stuff to Mayo.  It's incredibly sketchy.

Tim Floyd is a good coach
He really took that program out of the Henry Bibby dark... but he definitely does seem like a guilty party here. You can tell by the looks, and what's been heard about him since he came.

He also looks like manbearpig.
