Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Wrestling Article

Here is the wrestling article I posted a few days back.  I accidentally posted over it, but some have requested that I put it back up so it could be linked to.  Here goes:

The Oregon wrestling community is suing the UO <http://www.ducksportsnews.com/blog/2008/06/oregon-wrestlers-suing-frohnmayer/> for alleged illegalities in dropping the wrestling team. I say bravo for the wrestlers.

I know that I haven't always been kind to the wrestling cause on this site, but when athletic department officials acknowledged that Oregon did not need to drop wrestling to be in complance with Title IX, that did it for me. If there are no Title IX issues, why are we dropping the sport? If we can have both baseball AND wrestling, then what't the issue?

The Cas Center may claim lack of facilites or lack of support in their decision, but I don't buy that. Wrestling attendance is certainly no worse than volleyball. And as for facilities, couldn't they just host matches in the volleyball gym that's going to be part of the new arena? And something tells me that they don't really care where they put down their practice mats. You could put 'em in the basement gym of Gerlinger Annex and I'd bet that they'd be happy just to wrestle.

As more information comes out on this, the more rotten it smells. It seems like its becoming personal, and that's never a good situation (see the Sonics for an example of that).

So here's to you wrestlers. Everyone shunned you, and you've continued to fight. You may just win this thing yet.

The exit to the high road is still available

Thanks for the optimism regarding our chances, Dave. We do think we have a stronger case than many give us credit for mounting.

The magnanimous thing for Oregon to do would be to offer a settlement that avoids a court spectacle and gives Duck wrestling the same opportunity to fund itself that Arizona State is giving its wrestling program. Sun Devil AD Lisa Love declared the program saved. ASU wrestling backers now have a positive environment in which to raise the funds the university requires in order to endow the program. They sill must produce, but now do it with the full blessing of the athletic department. That’s a big difference.

Unfortunately, Pat Kilkenny never created that atmosphere for saving wrestling. While he allowed Ron Finley to keep his desk, computer, and telephone, Kilkenny’s public statements always doubted wrestling’s chances to save itself and, by early springtime, pronounced dropping the sport to be inevitable. Under those conditions, any amount of cash or pledges raised were miraculous. Donors, big and small, are reluctant to contribute to a cause pronounced lost by the adminstration.

I suspect that the athletic department didn’t want fund-raising operations that competed with the drive to build a new baseball stadium, the indoor track facility, among other projects. Our administrators never thought wrestling backers would demonstrate such a tenacious and long-lasting effort. Maybe it’s time to settle this controversy with some good will.

How about a level playing field, Dave Frohnmayer and Pat Kilkenny? In the current bad atmosphere surrounding the Ramos affair, cost overruns on the arena and baseball stadium, parking controversies at Autzen, disagreements with neighbors regarding the arena, and a state of hostility with the Portland press—some peace within the family would be a good thing.
