Nate Costa's Redshirt Status
Discussion time!
Now that we know Nate Costa is out for the season with a torn ACL (again), I was hoping the good citizens of ATQ could provide some insight on the possibility of an extra redshirt year.
As I understand it, Costa was considered active in his true freshman year due to the fact that he saw game time. I specifically remember the Portland State game and wondering why Bellotti would waste Costa's redshirt year for mop-up duty in a blowout. Last year, Costa was using his non-medical redshirt year to preserve eligibility when he suffered his first ACL injury. It seems to me that since Costa has not used a redshirt for specific medical reasons (such as the recent injury) that he would at least have a chance of gaining an extra year of eligibility. Or am I incorrect, and is extra eligibility granted only in case of personal or family hardships, such as Sammie Stroughter's situation with OSCC last year?
Let the experts of the Duck world speak! And huck the fuskies.

Quote from Moseley's Blog
Athletes who miss two full seasons to injury during their five years of collegiate eligibility can appeal to the NCAA for a sixth year once the original window is up. The Ducks could do so when Costa’s eligibility expires after the 2010 season, though their case would be made difficult by the fact that his injury last year occurred past the midway point of the season.

quick thought
With now his second lost season to knee injury, can we not count on Costa moving forward now? I think the guy’s potential is fantastic, but counting on a guy this injury-prone might not be the best idea.

It'd be tough to count on him as a sure thing...
And I don’t think that will happen. But having an experienced and talented QB is never a bad thing.

Jason White...
He was injured for two seasons in a row (ACL Tear, same knee), and came out winning the Heisman right after that. Not that I’m saying Costa is a Heisman caliber QB, I’m just saying that this could be for the best.

White was a dropback passer...
One of Costa’s biggest tools is his mobility, which will be limited now, both from a physical (it won’t be able to do as many things, and as quickly) and a mental (he may be hesitant to run for fear of another injury) standpoint. White never really had to use his knees to make plays

Jason White was also a pro-style
We didn’t see him running the triple option and making reads almost every single play.

JSufelt, you idiot!
Jason White wasn’t a dual threat QB!
His knees wouldn’t matter as much if didn’t have to run the option.
I wanted to jump on the bandwagon!
