Tupou's suspension

So WTF's up with the NCAA suspending Tupou for accepting money from an agent?

These laws are terrible!  if the link is to be believed, he should be getting an medal for his efforts to return the money and to self-report.  If they're going to permit athletes to have contact with agents, the NCAA should be prepared for the eventuality that they will likely try to "force" benefits upon a potential client.

So Tupou tries to give the money back, and then probably comes in to the Assistant AD's office in a panic, saying that he didn't mean to, that he doesn't want the money, just get rid of it so it doesn't cause trouble.  What do they do? Suspend him for the opener.  Shows a lot of understanding on the NCAA's part.

But what am I complaining about?  We've always known the NCAA is totally exploitative, tyrannical, and bureaucratic.  I guess it's just another lost cause.

I am

100% with gribbit that the NCAA is wayyy too exploitative, tyrannical and bureaucratic. Sometims the crap they do just makes me scratch my head and wonder.

In this case though I think they pretty much had to do what they had to do. If Tupou really did not want the money he should have told the guy that him offering him money puts his career on the line and to bug off. But kudos to Tupou for doing the honest thing in the end.

read the link— The guy put the money in his hand and walked away, and when Tupou tried to give it back, he refused on multiple occasions. this isn’t a matter of Tupou getting caught with money. It’s a matter of a guy putting him in a horrible position, and he self-reported and did the best he could to deal with it and stay above board. Then, the NCAA punished him for it anyway.

They've gone to plaid!

It's rules...

Bad rules, but they are rules, and if you don’t enforce all of them at all times, then it gets really messy.

Tupou did the best thing he could, and he did the right thing, and he got punished. Hopefully this can be an example for the NCAA to reevaluate how their bylaw is written. They probably won’t, but there is always wishful thinking.

Go Duckies!

he should have

He should have reported right away. Why did he wait a month, especially three days before the game. You have to be smarter than that if you want to look innocent.

If this had been

One of the bigger programs, it would have been a great sign of maturity and the NCAA would have issued a statement declaring “we need more student athletes like him”

USC and Reggie Bush get nothing for receiving $300,000.
This kid gets a suspension for a $10 meal and $100 cash? Seems wrong
