My impressions from the Purdue trip – Non football

Pre Game

West Lafayette is definitely a great college town. We got in at about noon, on our way from the parking lot to the bar we were stopped by 2 coeds dressed as blind mice. That’s when we were reminded of breakfast club. Every home game the bars open up at 7am, people dress up like it’s Halloween and drink till game time. Really this tradition is ingenious, when I was in college Halloween was always my favorite holiday, now they get it 6-8 extra times a year. They live it up too, apparently for the rivalry games people will get inline for the bar hours early. Suffice to say, most of the Purdue fans were good and plastered at the bar.

The thing that we were all most surprised about at the bar was how nice everyone was (the drinking probably helped). People would just come up to us, and the conversation would usually go like this:

Drunk Purdue fan: “We’re going to win” or “You guys suck”

Brad and his buddies – trying to catch up on the drinking: “I doubt it” or “Not as bad as you”

Purdue fan - slurring: “It’s all in good fun, did you guys come from Oregon?”

Brad and his confused buddies – stop to order another pitcher: “Some of us are the rest from Chicago”

Purdue fan: “Cool, have a good time”

The two notable exceptions: The one asshole wearing mullet wig was really annoying, he thought it would be cool to tap me and another one of us a bunch on the O on our hats. I was not happy. Another guy (must have been an econ major) thought he would intelligent to make the point that we were stupid for supporting their local economy. I mentioned to him that Purdue would be going to Eugene next year and he stopped.

At the bar we were at there was one or two other big groups of Oregon fans as well as a smattering of Oregon couples, Purdue fans were impressed with how well we like to travel. We made friends with one group who not only knew to wear costumes but brought their own Oregon mallet. Good thing too, because they told us at half time there were plenty of seats open in the third row at half time so we got a nice little upgrade.

The Campus and Stadium:

Both look great, very clean, everything was made of nice looking brick and all in one tight spot. We were in a hurry to catch the USC tOSU game so we didn’t stay to watch some kind of post game pep rally in quad, but it seemed like a nice little tradition they had.

Post Game:

We went back to the same bar, even after a tough loss it was still pretty crowded. Thankfully one of the guys in my group made friends with a couple girls on a big table and got them to share it with us. When we got there they noticed we were duck fans, chatted politely for a few minutes then left the bar. So, we had a nice pizza and watched the best team in the nation do what they do.

All in all we had a great time surrounding a very scary game.

That's pretty awesome

Polite opposing fans always generally make a good impression on their program for me. This effectively makes it harder for me to hate the Fuskies nowadays.

Fusky fans are only nice because they're so bad

you’re too young to remember Fusky fans of old.

I always liked WSU fans. Nice folks.

Oh I remember the early 2000s Fusky fans

But exactly, they’ve been docile by way of suckage as of late. It does make sense.

Some of them were mildly abusive

Last year when I was at UW but I think honestly they were just really really drunk…

early 2000s they were bad

but the mid and late 90’s we were worse. I recall dogshit and biscuits being thrown in their visitor section, and a husky fan being hospitilzed.

Yeah...

The fans were pretty good folks.
I just hope we can return the favor next year

Ann Arbor...

was hell last year for my friend and I. I was pleasantly surprised at how polite the Purdue fans were. I was somewhat weary because I was taking my girlfriend (well she bought the tickets for me for my birthday) to her first big time football game.
I think the rudest things I heard during the game were…“Hey Ducks, what combination is your team wearing today” which was immediately followed by his friend saying “Dude they are wearing white helmets and jerseys and green pants, they just said it on the radio.”

Overall it was a much better experience than the Big House, polite crowd they had at Purdue. I also experienced an upgrade in seating, but mine was to the front row behind the South Endzone.

South endzone

I think we must have been close to you. For the second half, we were in the third row behind the south end zone. In another post, you seemed to indicate that you were one of the guys who hopped the railing after the game to congratulate the players.

Most likely

were right by me. I was one of the wild few who jumped over. I have never had the experience of sitting with other Oregon fans at a Duck game so I thought I might as well live it up. I was in the student section at Michigan last year, so I left as soon as I could.

I jumped too

I saw a few people go over and thought “hell yeah” and figured my friends would be right behind me. I got down there and was jumping up and down yelling and screaming, turned around and they were still up there – lame

Michigan fans are snobs

They are only slightly better than ND fans and only because they have had general success recently, well except this year.

Gameday in West Lafayette

I made the trip as well…here’s a few casual observations:

  • Overall I was impressed by the Purdue gameday experience. Nice stadium, lots of tailgating, everyone wearing black (except us Duckies), and some good traditions. I have that cheer stuck in my head today…“boiler UP! (clap clap) boiler UP! (clap clap)…”
  • They play the “Shout” scene/song from Animal House at the end of the third quarter. All the Oregon fans looked at each other like, “Hey, Animal House is OUR movie!” So we were all singing along to “Shout” just like the Purdue crowd.
  • I enjoyed the scoreboard clip of Mel Gibson in “Braveheart”, giving his big speech before the battle. They overdubbed an impersonator’s voice so Mel was telling his hordes to “BOILER UP!!!”
  • The halftime marching band rendition of “Devil Went Down To Georgia” was, ah, not a good idea. The fiddlers were coming out the PA system a half-beat ahead of the rest of the band on the field, so not only did it sound bad, it sounded out of sync. Normally I would not bother to comment about the marching band, but it was truly an awful experience sitting through that song.
  • I didn’t hear much smack from the Purdue fans, either before or during the game. A frat boy did throw a water balloon our way as we walked past the frat house after the game. Everyone else seemed pretty friendly.
  • I almost feel bad for the Purdue crowd, as they spent all afternoon thinking they were finally going to notch a win over a Top 25 team, only to have their hearts ripped out at the end.
  • I’m glad Purdue’s kicking game needs work.
  • We had a great time on the Ducks bus from Chicago. It was comfortable, we had cold beers and snacks, and we watched last year’s Michigan and USC games on the bus TV as we rolled through Indiana. The UOAA tailgate party was also fun and well attended. Special guests included Pat Kilkenny and Dick Harter.
  • Actual billboard spotted on a farm in Indiana: “HELL IS REAL”. Yeah, and we are driving through it right now.
  • The Addicted to Quack community was well represented at the game — DavisDuck, jtlight, bradLL99, ntrebon, and JSchufelt were all in the house, as well as ChicagoQuack503 (were you wearing a yellow sport coat?).

Halftime note...

At the end of halftime, I was able to watch the Oregon players file back into the stadium. There was a group of Oregon fans who were cheering them on and trying to get them pumped up for the second half. There were two Oregon players of note that seemed, in my opinion, completely disinterested by their body language. Of note, one of those two had a stellar second half and the other did not…

Blount and J-Will

J-Will was pointing at himself and one of the few players with his helmet off. I didn’t notice Blount though
