The Pac-10 lower than the MWC?

Pac-10 ConferenceThe week the Pac-10 definitely took a blow when it comes to the argument of which is the best conference.

While USC appears to be head-and-shoulders above every other team in the Pac-10 country, the remaining teams in the conference are not boding well. This can even be said for Oregon (3-0), Cal (2-1), and Arizona St. (2-1).

One might say, "Wait a minute! How can these teams not be doing all they can do make the conference look good? Just look at their record."

Well, in my opinion, of the three, No. 16 Oregon has really made a good case by going 3-0 thus far. However, for two-and-a-half quarters they struggled against a Purdue team whom many thought the Ducks would beat by at least 2 touchdowns.

No. 15 Arizona St. was stunned by UNLV. Next up for the Sun Devils? No. 2 Georgia! Enough said.

No. 23 Cal lost to Maryland—a team that beat Delaware by only one touchdown and lost to Middle Tennessee.

Then there are teams like UCLA. You know, beating Tennessee—making everyone start to believe there just might be two football teams in Southern California this season—then getting blown out by No. 18 BYU 59-0.

Zero? Yes, zero!

Washington... well, they're still Washington.

Stanford was thought to be a team on the rise (or at least the Beavers would have you believe that), but I'll reserve judgment on that until after they play San Jose St. next week.

Arizona sure came out of the gate charging hard. Coach Mike Stoops was probably thinking he was starting to turn things around and his job was going to be safe. That was until the daunted New Mexico Lobos pulled out the V card. Lobo is the Spanish word for "wolf". They have teeth just like a wild cat. I guess lobos are just tougher.

Washington St. is currently 0-3. No real surprise there. I look for them to be 0-4 after they play Portland St. next week.

Oregon St. came out and lost to Stanford and then got a whoopin' by Penn St. They managed to get a win against Hawaii, but the joy won't last long as they host USC next week.

So, now that I've offered my brief rundown of each Pac-10 team, why is it that I compare the conference to the MWC in the title?

Through the first three weeks the Pac-10 has played the MWC on five different occasions. My initial thought is that perhaps the Pac-10 has won a respectable three of the five games.

Uh, check that. The Pac-10 is 0-5 against the MWC thus far this season.

Let me repeat that.

The Pac-10 is 0-5 against the Mountain West Conference. Not a single win. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

So, I'm sorry to say, but at this point the Pac-10 is lower on the totem pole than the MWC.

I really can't argue with you

And if it wasn’t for SC I would agree with you.

USC is better than everyone in the MWC and I think Oregon and Cal is too, though after last Saturday you could certainly argue that they are worse than BYU and Utah. I just think they both suffered from over confidence. That being said to say the Pac-10 has 3 teams better then the two best MWC is not a good thing.

fluke

and, look, we may have struggled a bit against Purdue. But we had a quarterback making his first start on the road against a senior laden BCS opponent. We’re still a darn good football team—don’t panic.

You’re right. No one should be panicking. It is, after all, still early in the season.

And it was nice to see the No Quit attitude in a team that didn’t play well much of the game.

Panic is not the issue here, really. It’s more of how in the hell is the MWC beating up on the Pac-10.

It just doesn’t seem right.

lol

Panic

I think people are too quick to panic and say that he PAC 10 just sucks because of one weekend. I don’t think we are the 2nd best conference this year, but I also don’t think that we suck. Did everyone forget about BYU vs UW? I agree with Dave, I think there was an element of fluke to the weekend. I don’t think the PAC 10 is as bad as everyone is saying, and I don’t think we’re as good as everyone thought before this weekend….it’s somewhere in the middle IMO.

No, the Pac-10 does not suck.
say that he PAC 10 just sucks because of one weekend

And no one claimed they do. At least not on ATQ.

Also, we’re not talking about “one weekend”. We’re talking about the first three weeks and how the MWC has beat the Pac-10 all five times they’ve played.

The majority of the post was really to give a brief rundown of each team’s ups and downs, etc. But it was awfully interesting to me how the MWC is putting it to the Pac-10 this year.

Again, even saying that just doesn’t seem right.

I just want to offer another perspective.

I love the Empty Paras!

lol

But seriously, the “argument” is “at this point the Pac-10 is lower on the totem pole than the MWC”.

I don’t see it any other way when the Pac-10 is 0-5 against the MWC.

It’s the same argument the Pac-10 uses to defend themselves against the SEC. “Well, just look at how we compare when playing the SEC teams.”

Soo..

MWC > Pac-10 > SEC?

Rock on! Sucks for the SEC!

Go Duckies!

I guess I find myself uninterested in making these sort of imperfection arguments based off of extremely small sample sizes. We have 5 games. I think we would need to have far more data points before we could make a more reasoned analysis of conference strength.

Yes. I completely agree! But what fun is that. lol

Just to be clear, I did say "at this point the Pac-10 is lower on the totem pole than the MWC".

Meaning At This Point in the season. Not necessarily that overall the MWC is superior.

Please, oh please, don’t let that be the case. lol

Bias

Here’s what Mark Schlabach on ESPN.com thinks about this subject. The PAC 10 has only scheduled 1 1-AA opponent (I refuse to call it FCS).

Go Cougs

Here’s hoping the one opponent is a W for us!

by johnnycougar on Sep 16, 2008 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions

didn't ASU play N. Arizona?

combine that with WSU playing Portland State, and isn’t that 2 1-AA teams?

I believe it’s I-AA teams so far, not total
