Is Oregon Ready To Compete With USC?
With the rest of the Pac-10 going down in flames last week, it appears only two of the Pac-10 schools remain in good standing for BCS consideration. Although both teams have some tests along the way and would be foolish to overlook them (we all know how much the Trojans love Corvallis), it's looking like Oregon-USC will be the big battle for the Pac-10 in the first week of October.
Even as a Cal fan, I can only assume more bumps are headed our way after the way we got shredded in College Park. For now, both the Bears and Sun Devils are relegated to the shadows while Oregon is thrusted into the spotlight as the at-large Pac-10 contender. The question is, do you think you guys are ready?
After seeing the Trojans dismantle the Buckeyes and seeing the Ducks pull out a difficult win in Purdue, do you guys think you're a better team than Ohio State? If so, do you guys have the talent to challenge USC for four quarters and pull up the upset? How will Oregon's young offense challenge the USC's defense and vice versa?

i think if we play a flawless game then it will be close. masoli will have had to gain some chemistry with the offense and harper needs to learn how to throw the ball, assuming roper is still out. remember, this game is at the colisium this year so thats another advantage, and factor in they want revenge for last year. but i think usc just has hands down the most talent of any team in the country, i mean they probably run 5-star recruits 2 or 3 deep at every position. if we get good qb play, our line opens up some holes and j-will can hang on to the ball, along with forcing turnovers (that is extremely important) then we will have a chance. but first things first, if we dont beat boise st and wash st, then the usc game just decides whether we go to the holiday bowl or the sun bowl again.

No Chance
I’m an avid Duck fan, but I gotta believe, Oregon will make a game of it for 1 qtr. Defensive wise, I like our chances a whole lot more than I did last year, but offensively Dennis Dixon truly was a diamond in the rough last year, I don’t see any of the QB’s this year matching what he did to SC a year ago.
After Oregon’s first real big test last weekend, I would say that the #2 spot in the PAC-10 is still wide open. I’m optimitic that Oregon can rebound, and they play another worthy opponent this weekend, and could easily be 5-0 going into that SC game which I plan on being at, but let’s not fool ourselves.
Sanchez is 5x the QB he was last year in Autzen even with dislocated kneecap from a month ago. If the QB play is a whole lot better, we can establish the run, which seemed to be the only thing tOSU was some what able to do with Pryor, and the WR’s catch passes, then we have a slight chance.
If Oregon plays the way they did against Purdue, SC will easily put up 50 or 60 pts.

Maybe
I think the defense, specifically the pass defense, will keep it close. I want to see how the offense responds in the next 2 weeks. One thing that’s going to make this tough is that we aren’t going to sneak up on them. It seems to me like most of USC’s losses in the past few years have been in games that they couldn’t get motivated for. If we are 5-0 headed to L.A., we will most likely be game of the week and they’ll have plenty of motivation.
That being said, I think we have a chance. That’s the beauty of football. How many of the you said that the NY Giants had a ZERO percent chance of beating the Patriots? Be honest! I’m realistic; I think USC would beat us 8 or 9 times out of 10, but I’m optimistic. If we come out in the next 2 weeks and struggle on offense with the “new” QB’s, I reserve the right to change my vote.

You know I love my Ducks
but the answer is no. We could beat USC, but it would take the combination of a flawless game by us and a poor game by SC.

I remember a few years back
When the trojans came to Autzen and played poorly for a halt, and the ducks went into the locker room with the lead. Then the second half rolled around, and USC came out and just completely stomped on us. I have a feeling that’s what this game will be like, especially if we aren’t playing absolutely perfect football.

Hanging around
Stop being so optimistic! lol
We should just send the practice squad so no starters get hurt. It could be like a bye week; we could let everyone heal up for UCLA. :)

Yep
I flew back to Eugene for that game. Fun first half. Second half, not so much.
My thoughts on Oregon vs. USC is that, at this point, it woudl not be close. We just have too many questions on offense. Going up against the USC defense will not be the place to find any answers. Against non-elite teams, we may have enough talent to cover up some of those issues.

What Ohio State did was quite inconsequential to how good the Oregon team may or may not be. On our best of days, USC could still win if they play a reasonably good game. It’s about who’s better that particular day on that particular field, not who’s beaten who.

This will be a great test for our team...
I feel that our offense won’t be able to do enough overall, but this will be a great test of USC’s run defense. I’m not totally convinced we can’t run the ball semi effectively. With the QB problems we’re bound to have, running the ball will be key. Can we get over 200 yards on the ground? Maybe if we run the ball 50 times.
On the other side of the ball, it all depends on if we can stop the run. Ohio State didn’t do that, and that caused the unravelling. Oregon must make Sanchez beat them, as they did last year. Can Sanchez do that? I’m not so sure. His game against Ohio State wasn’t that great, with only decent YPA and completion. But the running game was going, and that made his job easy.
If Oregon is going to have a chance, they will need to control both lines, will be very tough. They cannot let USC to get pressure like it did against OSU.
Even if all those things break, which they very well could, I don’t think our QBs at this point will be able to beat USC. There is no reason to think they’d come out and play the way they need to in order to keep the USC defense honest and not make mistakes.
There is a very small chance Oregon could win this game, but I wouldn’t put money on it. I think they’ll do better than Ohio State, but that’s not saying much.

Agree
What we do have going for us is the spread and being able to get the ball into the hands of playmakers (even if they aren’t for big gains). Ohio State not only had Beanie out but a predictable offensive scheme. Quotes from USC players mention that they knew exactly what Ohio State was going to run every time because they had seen it all on film and prepared for it. Oregon does come up with a few wrinkles every now and then in the spread. I’m not convinced that Ohio State is very good this year. USC has looked very impressive against a medicore Virginia team and a traditional eye formation powerhouse in Ohio State but we have an almost entirely different look. That being said, if our offensive is anything like what it was at Purdue, it may be a long afternoon. Relying on our defense to do what they did in the second half of the Purdue game is going to be too much to ask against USC

One thing to keep in mind
Is that USC has had trouble with either (a) complacency or (b) familiarity with their Pac-10 counterparts. The past few seasons they have struggled with Washington, Oregon St. you guys, UCLA, and of course Stanford after going out of OOC and steamrolling their opponents (who turned out to be not-so-good)
Do you guys think this is just a deeper USC team than the past two? Or do they get up for the big games and sleepwalk through the rest?

Cocky
I posted this on BuildingTheDam too, but I think they are too cocky. They remind me of the Patriots. They say the right things, but I feel like they don’t believe what they’re saying…it’s like they’re trying to talk themselves into believing stuff like “we respect all of our opponents”. I think that after hearing how untouchable they are they’ll start believing it and slip at some point. I’m not saying that will lead to them losing, but we’ve consistently seen them let teams hang around. If you let teams hang around, it’s only a matter of time before one of them breaks through (or gets lucky lol). I think they are the best team in the PAC 10 and if they play their A game every week they’ll roll…the challenge is getting 18 – 23 year olds to play their A game EVERY week when they continually hear how nobody has a chance.

Offense
its given that they are going to put big points on the board on the offensive side. as good as our defense is (at times) i dont know if we can keep them under 30. its oging to be determined by how well we can run the ball, like most of you have already said, and if the quarterbacks can keep from throwing picks.
i think we have a good shot though. i know they are good, maybe best in good ole petes time good, but i think that oregon has the weapons to get it done, they just have to perform. its one day that matters. i know ill take oregon anyday of the week against any team.
i think they will win this one in a close game with huge numbers on the board. it could be masoli’s coming out party…

It's not given that they will put big points on the board...
Their offense only put 28 on Ohio State. Our defense has excelled at stopping touchdowns in adverse circumstances. That will not change.
They only put up 17 last year, and many not be that much better. Their passing game has not been really tested this year, and Sanchez has not faced pressure. I do not have much faith in their passing game. If you can stop their run, you have a chance.
The main problem is scoring enough points to keep up with whatever they get.

10% - 20%
I agree with that assessment. As I said above, I think that USC would win 8 – 9 times out of ten. The beauty of college football is that the 10% – 20% happens! Something we always said in the Marines is “expect the worst and hope for the best”. I’m cautiously optimistic. I’d really like to see what OS does with them, and how our QB’s perform in the next 2 weeks.

not this year
With USC’s formidable defense and the way our receivers played last week I don’t think we have a chance. Kory Sheets of Purdue is not as good as three of USC’s top backs so this will be our one loss in an otherwise perfect season.

USC is not who we think they are
If we beat BSU, we have a chance against USC. If we lose Saturday, NO CHANCE.
I believe USC isn’t as good as most people think and I also think this Oregon team is significantly better than people think. The injury to Roper has created doubt about Oregon. I understand how injuries can affect a point spread but poll position?
We won on the road against Purdue, a dangerous program with a good winning percentage the last 10 years, playing a bad game, faling behind by 17 points, and with backup freshman QB. Are you kidding me?
Purdue’s offense is good but didn’t sustain any long TD drives. That is the mark of a good defense making it to the next level, and becoming dominant.
USC is very good, but the perception is what people are drinking. The reality is USC had questions coming in and through two games these haven’t been answered . The inexperienced O-line and D-line are looking good but I believe that has more to do with Maluaga, McKnight and an shell shocked OSU team. The Ducks line should be able to gain an advantage as long as holding calls stay even. The WR’s and Sanchez have looked more like last year than like Lienart and Palmer’s teams. And as of today, Sanchez has started a grand total of 5 more games than the Ducks starter, whoever it is. Sanchez also has a 000% winning percentage against Oregon. In a close game, that will get in his head and he has shown a knack for interceptions when pressured. I hope I’m right even though I am going against the current line of thought. But I did with Texas/USC also and won a lot of money.

Taking the next step
I told my friends our kicking game was going to help us win a game we had no business winning this year so I guess that hand has been played. My next call is that if we win the next two games, the play of Masoli and/or Harper will be very good, leaving us with a clear 1,2,3 at QB with Roper NOT being the No. 1. Personally I think Masoli will start but Harper will sieze the job by the end of the WSU game. A freshman Vince Young stole Major Applewights job when Texas was playing good ball. Why do I bring this up? Young couldn’t throw the ball. And Applewight was reigning conference MVP!.
If we can stay under the radar for two more weeks, something special could be happening. The D has jelled and may even exceed Gang Green if we stay healthy. They are certainly better than 2000 and 2001, both great years in Oregon history.
Across the board, when comparing this team to the past 15 years, the 2008 edition should go down as the best of all of them, and I don’t think it is even close. the only question mark is QB. At every other position this team is equal too Oregon’s best. Does anyong disagree with my following assessment?
RB, 2008 = 2007, 2001, 1998. Blount Force Trauma. POWWW!!!!
O-line = 2007 which was better than all the rest. See the stats, Nuff said.
D-Line. > 2007 and Ngata’s teams, 2000 and 1994. Reed and Tukuafa = Best tandem ever
LB’s > 2007, Mitchell’s teams and the Gang Green team. Faster, and has depth.
Secondary = 1994. If true, that secondary was awesome.
Kicking = See my first sentence. It’s clearly about helping your team win.
Return game = Any other Tom Osborne team.
WR’s = 2004. Okay, Okay, this team droppes way to many passes, but they get open so easy. This is our only weak spot yet their abilty to hit home runs and take it to the house is exceptional.

As I said above I reserve the right to change my mind. We are going to get HOUSED unless our coaches all of a sudden pull their heads out of their collective asses. The BSU game makes me sick. I’d be asking for their coach if it wasn’t for the fact that his players were freaking headhunting all game.
