Notes from the Utah State "game"
- The Yellow Helmets look worse than ever.
- Roper looked comfortable running, and he seems to have built up on the quickness and agility. Very impressive making reads.
- Mancrush on Chris Harper.
- Chris Harper's throws were on minimal West Coast plays. His touchdown pass was perfectly placed, but it looked more like a rollout with a 7 yard shovel pass. It was a wobbly, weak pitch that was throw as accurately as possible into the hands of (I think) Rory Cavaille. A nice looking play with an option to take it in on the ground, but a good job in keeping his head up and looking for receivers.
- Jay Masoli needs to work on a few things. He needs to be more consistent with throws. They can be a perfect laser on one, then an ugly pass that trails his man by 3 yards. He throws flat footed a lot. I think it's the tempo change... he doesn't know yet that receivers are so fast.
- Terence Scott is a huge target. He's getting the most passes this year, I love it. The jazz man coming through for us a lot. His dropped pass in the endzone on that perfect Roper ball was his only mistake all year.
- Ed! Getting Ed Dickson involved for the first time yesterday was awesome. I wanted him so bad to get that TD, but after review he was stopped at the 1 foot line. He wanted it too.
- Roper's pick was bad, but that was his only mistake all day. The second he threw it, I saw it going right to the DB. I think he did too. He talked to Chip and came back and did everything right from then on.
- LeGarrette Blount is like a fucking 18 wheeler.
- Remene Alston got lots of touches, and he was making the most of it, a few flashes of excellent speed and quickness. Woooo.
- Andre Crenshaw needs to improve if he wants to be a premier back in time.
- Matt Evensen had 3 consecutive kickoffs that had the distance to go through the uprights, one of which actually did. He's got a powerful Groza-worthy leg that will not return to the UW game form.
- Where the hell are J-Will and Pflu? J-Will got two balls thrown to him at the very beginning, that he took for good yardage after catch. That was good, but we didn't see much of him the rest of the game. Same with the UW game. Pflugrad hasn't been playing at all, he must be the #4 receiver because I've seen a lot more 3-WR sets this year than last year.
- Pflugrad dropped a Chris Harper pass. At first I was surprised, then I wanted to cut his nuts off.
- I can't stand opposing mobile QBs. When will Alliotti start having MIKEs spy? Time after time we get burnt by QB draws and scrambles.
- Masoli needs to take advantage of his legs. He runs too east-west, and far too little. Chip should try to get him to have just as much confidence in his legs as his arm.
- If Brody Wilkins is on the roster, yesterday would've been the day to see him out there. Is he redshirting?
- Malachi Lewis needs more touches. This kid has sticky hands and a huge body to truck.
- The O-line was great as expected.
- The D-line, I thought, could've gotten in the backfield more, but I wasn't disappointed either.
- Our LBs didn't have much action that I saw.
- Our secondary is the best in the west.
- Josh Syria was probably very bored today.
- How does Chip do it?
Does anyone have any questions about the game? I was there so I could give you a photographic transmission of almost any play.

I was there too...
Let me just say that I think almost all of us have Harper man crushes! I enjoyed watching the 2nd/3rd string too…it’s cool to get a first-hand glimpse at our future. One thing that has stuck with me is Marvin Johnson. In the 4th quarter he was lighting people up. It’s comforting for me to know we have someone back there when Chung leaves!

M. Johnson
He was the man too…
TJ Ward is Rashad Bauman incarnate. I’m excited as hell about him the next few years.

If memory serves me correctly (and believe me, it fails often) the kickoff that went through the uprights was kicked from the 45. Wasn’t there a 15 yard penalty on the previous play that was enforced on the kickoff?
Either way, you’re absolutely correct in that he had some BOOMING kicks.
I actually thought Crenshaw looked alright. He’s no J.J., but he did rack up 101 combine yards. 10 carries for 72 yards (7.2 avg.) and 1 TD. Two catches for 29 yards (14.5 avg.).
I agree about the opposing mobile QBs. Damn them!

Yes, the first was aided by 15 yards
What I meant was that the succeeding two kicks were absolutely drilled.
Those stats actually look a lot better… he must have done it quietly. My bad. I still think he might need to make much more of a push if he wants to be 1A.

Crenshaw
I don’t know what it is, but I left the game thinking the same thing about Crenshaw. Maybe I just expect him to break away more. I came away more impressed with Alston than Crenshaw.

Seeing CWS's stat line
I guess he did it quietly… but I just think that he may have hit a ceiling or something.

Yeah, he may not be quite the guy to break out a 175 or 200 yard game. But I’ve always thought he was a good little work horse and puts in a days work.

He sure did at the UW game last year
His first game stepping in carrying a lot of the work for JJ, he rolled. Then again, he had lanes to drive a truck through in that game.

Jamere Holland
Where the hell is Holland? He’s supposed to be our fastest player and huge big play threat!
Not starting yet
Too young, probably needs to bulk up on hands. He came in alongside the 3rd stringers and such later in the game.

- I love the yellow helmets. I actually had a conversation in the stands with my fellow students (all 1 freaking section of them), and we decided that we didn’t know what the fuss was, and that they actually looked pretty good in the sun.
- Crenshaw fo sho needs to improve. I counted at least 5 leg tackles. Move those legs!
- I’m not so sure about your assessment of our secondary. I thought that they could have played much more aggressively in the zone. If we play a team that has halfway decent QB/WR chemistry, we are going to give up a lot of yards to 10-15 yd over the top passes. That being said, I think that there was not a ton of reason to press, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
Other than that, good post, thanks.
I was there
and i did’nt even notice Holland on the field. Did he even catch a pass? Or was one even thrown his way?
Yep, caught one
I also remember it was for no gain or a loss… I remember thinking “Well, first reception of his career could’ve been more productive…”
Your friendly neighborhood placekicker.
I'm pretty sure
he still hasn’t learned the playbook like he’s supposed to. his loss until he gets his shit straight.
They've gone to plaid!
Dumb thoughts
Yes the yellow Helmets are ugly (did Blount really come to Oregon because he liked the uniforms?) keep those mean green Helmets …they are awesome…..The rest of the uniforms need something…The whites are fine, but they can do better on the rest….keep them smart, but classy….a little too funky for my taste But I’m old, and set in my opinions….It’s a young people’s world and I must move aside….
How did Utah State get 24 points…..it was said that they have the worst football program in the NCAA…Does the Duck D have holes or did they just relax too much?
Evensen…..He has some lapses at times, but he always seems to come back….
I invented boxer shorts
Utah State played hard...
For being a crappy team, I actually thought they gave a lot of effort. I was more impressed with their O than Washington.
Go Duckies!
