Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

SMQ/Dr. Saturday provides good reasons why Purdue will be unable to match Oregon's offense. Purdue's defense is nothing special, and will have a tough time keeping Oregon under 30. Painter will have a hard time winning this game on his own. On top of this, the Oregon defense hasn't been tested, and against a high profile QB, they will be very motivated. Shutting down the Purdue passing game will turn some heads, and I think that will happen.

Also, Purdue and Painter have been terrible against non-MAC winning teams.

Overall, they simply do not have enough talent to match Oregon. They are average to below average at every position but QB.

Smack Talk

I’ve been looking all over the web for some Purdue smack-talking and can’t find anything. They are all saying we are going to win. Scary…

34-23, it may not be that close...

I sat through the first three quarters of Big Ten Network replay of Purdue v. N. Colorado (Big Sky Conference). That alone, was tough to take. A few notes:

Forget the final score, it was 14-0 Purdue with just a few minutes to go in the third. And Purdue up to that point almost looked terrible. The only things keeping N. Co. from scoring were false start penalties and some bone-headed plays at inopportune moments. At times N. Co. moved the ball at will against Purdue’s defense, both on the ground and in the air.

QB Painter had his moments, but at times also looked inaccurate, especially when some pressure was applied. On several occasions he threw too high to receivers in the red zone. He’s being hyped for Heisman consideration by the Purdue athletic department. Seems like quite a stretch, though he’ll finish the year with gaudy numbers no doubt. RB Sheets hits holes hard and catches the ball well out of the backfield.

The way I see it: Northern Colorado did nothing to prep Purdue for Oregon’s speed on either side of the ball. At the same time, Purdue clearly was uninspired in this game…and it showed everywhere.

They’ll be more focused for Oregon. I’m just not sure that will matter.

I concur...

I really just don’t see them as that great a football team. They are pretty much average everywhere. I think Painter is overrated, as he has completely fallen apart in big games. They have feasted on bad teams, and crapped the bed against good ones.

I did a preview a few weeks ago, and I think the final score will be lower. Oregon will have about 35, and I think Purdue ends up with less than 20, and it’s not as close as the final score.

For another great read on Purdue, check out Mgoblog’s season preview of them, which is outstanding.

Purdue just doesn’t have anyone that can take over a game and win it, and I include Painter in that. They are thoroughly average in every way.

Road Game

Road games are always tough. Talent aside, we are playing at their house and it isn’t a place the players or staff are familiar with. Their stadium is about the size of Autzen but with a much different vibe. They are hyping this game as their “contender or pretender” game and it reminds me a little bit of when Michigan came to Autzen. We have done a good job of taking teams seriously this year so far. I hope the trend continues

Remember, Purdue RB Jaycen Taylor is out (torn ACL)

According to that MGoBlog post, Purdue’s play calling went 380 to 235 in favor of passing plays. Given our wealth of pass-rushing talent (Reed, Tukuafu, Kenny Rowe, the occasional CB) we stand a good chance at hurting these guys with pressure. And I don’t think Joe Tiller calls a lot of 4- and 5-WR sets.

This game will really test the LBs. Purdue is not great shakes as a running team, and if the Ducks stop the run early they can force Purdue into a one-dimensional attack, mixing up blitzes to keep Painter off balance. It’s also early enough where, on the off-chance that Purdue really isn’t very good, this won’t be discovered until it’s no longer advantageous for us.

I don’t worry too much about our offense. I feel like the only game where I really worry about what we do offensively is USC. For now, it’s all about execution and I think we have shown enough aptitude to this point.

Good points

Lacking in my earlier notes…

Northern Colorado was able to pressure the QB. Conversely, Purdue did not get a lot of pressure on the NoCo QB (a wash-out from U. of Florida who sometimes picked PU apart).

Primary offensive set was single back with 3 WRs, with a fair dose of single back 2 TE and 2 WR.
