The annual fire-Ernie columns are coming out...

Just like the annual fire-Bellotti, and fire-Alliotti columns.  Just wait until football loses a couple games under Kelly.  All of a sudden we'll find out from Canzano et al. that he was never suited to be a head coach and we should cut our losses and hire Rich Rodriguez away from Michigan.

Comparisons have been made of Ernie's team to a high school team.  Hasn't anyone noticed that it basically IS a high school team?

19 years old is not that different than 18 (and I bet some of them are still 18). Considering that TP has the stature of a 7th grader, I would say that makes up for the fact that Catron and Odia are reasonably well-developed basketball players, though not stars by any means.

This has always been a team with VERY RAW potential and no real veteran leadership.  I'm not a total Ernie apologist, but let's remember that this team is performing exactly one spot away from where we (or at least where I) thought they would in the preseason-- 10th instead of 9th. And the only reason they're not tied for 9th is the Beavs played one good game.

They are going to suck. They are going to suck all year, and possibly next year too. That's what we've got when six of our top eight players are true freshmen (I'm thinking Longmire and Catron are probably at the same talent level as the frosh).  And they're not just true freshmen, but four of them would probably use a redshirt year under normal circumstances.

There's no question that some of this is on Ernie, but also look back at Bob Clark's blog entry on how we got here in the first place.  Ernie made good decisions at the times he made them, but still found himself in this position.  It's his mess to clean up now.  Should he be fired?  I don't think so, not right now.

He should start fixing some of his other mistakes, though, like playing TP as a go-to scorer, (props for not starting him today, even though that didn't work out well either).  He has proven that the only thing he knows how to do is hit an open 3 when the defense collapses on a driving player.  Guess what?  None of our players can drive like AB, Bryce, Maarty, or Malik could.

Who would we hire, anyway?  Few is not coming back to Eugene, just like Pinkel didn't go back to Washington.  He's a hero in Spokane.  We're stuck in a conference that has the best top-to-bottom coaching in the nation.  Who is going to come in and compete?  We would have to gamble on an up-and-coming assistant, and we can't gamble when we have $200 million in state bonds to pay off.

I agreed with thus up until your very last paragraph

My mom’s secretary is the sister-in-law of one of the top assistants in the Gonzaga program, arguably the closest to Few. They’re both from Eugene, and both want to come back REALLY bad. Few would take the Oregon job in a heartbeat if offered (which we don’t know hasn’t happened yet, if you know what I mean.) He may be a local-hero in Spokane, but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to come back home. Mark Few is a great coach. It’s weird to think that a great coach would like to come to coach for us more than we would want him to, or at least more than the AD would want.

I can’t say for sure what’s going on in the heads of the Athletic Department higherups, but I do know that Few for a fact really, really wants in. If your ex-girlfriend Zooey Deschanel really wanted you back, and at the same time you were having some rough days with your current girlfriend Christina Applegate, what would you do?

and my brother’s best friend’s aunt’s former lover’s boss is probably thinks Mike Krzyzewski would come to Eugene, too. If they REALLY wanted to come back, and the Oregon athletic department knew it (especially considering that Kilkenny and Few are supposed to be BFFs or something), it would have happened by now. In fact, it would have happened before you were out of elementary school, when the first Luke and Luke team was struggling to reach .500.

It's as valid a statement as

you saying definitively, “Few is not coming back to Eugene.”

I have no idea if he would or not, but a new stadium and all the resources he could want to build a program in a premier conference?

Yeah, I’m sure he’s definitely married to Gonzaga forever and ever.

I wouldn't call Lekendric a freshman quality player

He’s the only player finishing right now, he does the best job of maintaining intensity, and he’s our most rounded out scorer. Is he a featured scorer? No. But he’s definitely more of a polished player than anything else we have.

I do like his aggressiveness, he sure seems to have the "take control" mentality that many of our young guys lack.

he’s got the most take control mentality, i wouldn’t say he has THE take control mentality. no one’s taken the team on their backs yet.

neither would I— he’s a mediocre redshirt sophomore player who is still better the raw talent Ernie is using.

it was meant as a reply to your post above...

also snarky, my apologies again— really, I’m a nice guy… honest.

anyway, I was pointing out that he’s actually a Sophomore. But probably the second- or third-best player on the team, after Catron and maybe Dunigan. But still, on a mid-level pac-10 team, I think he might be a decent 6th or 7th man at this point in his development.

There is a chance I might not have known either… By the time I wrote it, I was trying to fix the bball team’s problems with beer. As it turns out, beer is not very effective. I’m thinking of trying wine on Thursday.

Being patient. But it sucks!

There isn’t going to be any real heat on Ernie until the new arena opens. Then it’s success or else. If he’s not filling that place with fans, blue-chip recruits and top-tier non-conference opponents for national TV games, he’s going to be out on his arse.

I lived in Spokane the past 6+ years. Everyone there loves Few. Almost everyone there knows he’s coming to Eugene at some point. I can’t imagine that any coach of Few’s caliber sets his sights on being the winningest coach in WCC history. He’s going to take his act to a big conference somewhere down the line.

About all we can do right now is yell curses and throw stuff onto the floor (I mean that figuratively, of course). It’s going to take another two years for this to play out – that’s my guess at least.

I just hope we don’t go 0-for-the Pac-10 season, ’cause going winless in conference play is for the Dawgs.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

I'm not a big ernie hater

and i think he should keep his job unless we can get a bonafide superstar coach, but how come he can only recruit once every 4 years. He needs to be more consistent with his recruiting process rather then just re-upping every 4 years why not consistently get solid talent.

by phillyduck23 on Jan 18, 2009 12:37 AM PST reply actions

I understand what you're saying

It certainly seems like he only decides to recruit on election years. The thing about this is, though, at least he’s bringing in these mammoth classes. Right now, we may feel hapless with a bunch of young guys running our team. But in a year like 2011 or 2012, we’re certainly set to make a big run, provided these guys do blossom along the way. That’s what happened in 2006-07, all the frustration had paid off at last.

Another thing is, I can’t say for sure, but just spitballing… maybe he brings in talent that want to start immediately? Thus, the years where we have Juniors and Seniors starting, he may have trouble bringing in the Mike Dunigans, the Garrett Sims, the Matt Humphreys.

Again, I don’t know though. So don’t lash out on me for putting this up in the air. I’m looking at you gribbit ;)

no lashing

I swear, I’m really nice. My humor definitely did not translate into type on that one. Again, my apologies, because I sounded like an ass.

I totally agree. What you just said is the whole reason I wrote the fanpost in the first place. Because down the road, Canzano is going to write a piece about how this team has grown up. If Ernie is still around, he will say “Ernie is a great teacher, and he stuck behind his young team and helped them mature, and isn’t it cool that they’re all on track to graduate.”

If Ernie’s gone, the piece will be “Athletic Director Bellotti never should have fired Ernie. He put all these pieces together to make a great run into the tourney, and he should still be coaching UO today. What kind of idiots would have wanted him fired back when he was building a championship contender?”

Can’t anybody see a pattern emerging here? UO is not basketball royalty and does not win every year. Time to be realistic about it. (I know, it’s too much to ask Canzano and his cronies in other cities to be realistic, but I can dream.)

They've gone to plaid!

the other thing too is that fans of the Pac-10 are extremely spoiled when it comes to basketball. Look at the freshman class that was around last year who all went to the NBA as one-and-dones. I think a lot of people will measure success of freshman by what happened last year which was a total anomaly.
