Morning Quack Fix: 1.25.09 Weekend Edition
Here is some quick notes on the Duck news out there for this weekend.
- Mosley expects that Oregon will introduce their new defensive line coach, Jerry Azzinaro from Marshall, sometime around signing day. Obviously nothing is confirmed but if Rob feels that comfortable saying it, and given the fact that Azzinaro has cleaned out his desk at Marshall, this may be pretty much done.
- Anthony Leon apparently thinks the Arkansas Razorbacks are a better fit than Oregon and has decommitted from the Ducks and committed to Arkansas. I'm betting this was due to academic reasons but who knows.
- Cliff Harris, regarded as the nation's best cover corner, has committed to Oregon. Seems to be concerns about his academics, however.
- The Women's Hoops team had only scored 10 points by halftime in their loss to Cal on Saturday. The women are right in the middle of the Pac-10 at 4-4.
- Laird Prosser, a letter-winner for the Track and Cross Country Teams during the late 90's, has died due to complications from diabetes.
- Let's not forget Competitive Cheer! Er...wait, I mean... Team Stunts and Gymnastics.

Is it just me....
or can we they please start recruiting kids that can pass a simple ACT/SAT test and have a decent high school GPA. This reoccuring theme of kids who ‘have concerns regarding their academics’ is a joke. Coaches should be able to look at a kids transcripts and right away know what kind of shot he has at being admitted into school. I know because I can speak from experience. I was being recruited by a small NC school to play football and the coach, after talking to me, went to my school’s office and looked at my grades. He immediatley came back down to my coaches office and said that it would be a long shot for me to get into his school with my GPA/SAT scores. I wasn’t a horrible student but this school had higher standards and the coach knew right away it wasn’t going to fly. He subsequently stopped wasting his time with me and moved on to other kids. I am not pissed, if I had buckled down better in high school who knows what have happened but I ended up at the school I was supposed to be at and played college sports nontheless.
Now I know that my situation is in most ways vastly different from the kids Oregon recruits(I never had a mention of 1 or 2 stars let alone 4 or 5 beside my name) but it is the same principle. The OU coaches have an idea of what it takes academically to get accepted into their school and if they are recruiting a kid that is in the gray area why even bother. Think about how much time those guys spend traveling, talking to these kids on the phone, for what? Just to have the kid not be eligible. Makes no sense to me? Now instead of having 2 highly rated DB’s they are left with the possibility of nothing to show for their efforts. It seems obvious to me that OU has a good set of coaches in Eugene (seeing that they are top 10 material on the field but never get anywhere near that type of ranking in recruiting classes) Forget about the pretty recruits that aren’t going to cut it with the books, spend that time finding a kid of has fallen through the cracks, get him in school and coach the hell out of him.
Phew that is all, thanks for your time enjoy the veal…

Well...
With the level of talent that is there, you have to be able to recruit kids that are borderline. I don’t know the exact situation with Harris, but he still has a very good chance of making it to Oregon.
And I’m sure coaches are always making those judgment calls. How much time do we spend on Recruit A? And they must decide based on the overall chance the kid will make it to Oregon at the end of the day. And there are many factors (not just grades) that will keep a kid from going to Oregon.

and...
OS= Open Seats
Sorry, I just try to inject that into any conversation when possible…
Look at it this way, if we were in the NBA, we'd be completely amped up for a high probability of landing the #1 lottery pick...

I noticed John Wall has an “interest” in oregon. Is there any chance we get him?

I have learned to never underestimate the powers of Ernie Kent the recruiter. There is a shot but the current season can’t make it easy for him to decide.

Not going to happen
I read an article that talks about how Baylor just so happened to ‘hire’ his mentor/AAU coach, with no prior coaching experience, from Greensboro and that because of this it seems like he is a shoe in for the Bears.

i don’t know if I’d call a possible #1 NBA draft pick a shoe in for a program like Baylor just because they hired one guy. I’d say it definitely helps, and I’d say it’s close to the only thing Baylor could possibly do to have a shot at Wall, but I dunno about a shoe in.
