Quack Fix: Hoops media day; Steele still predicts Emerald Bowl for Ducks.
Well, ready or not, it's time to start putting some focus on the upcoming Pac-10 basketball season. Today's Quack Fix is a little soft on football coverage - no surprise halfway through a bye week.
- Ernie Kent is fairly candid about the pressure he feels to right the ship following last year's 8-23 record. The Ducks start practice Friday night, and Kent had a lot to say about the growth of his team when he sat down with the R-G's Ron Bellamy.
- Bellamy offers a few other notes from Oregon's media day.
- Evidently Bellamy was winning the day among local beat writers. He writes that post players Nicole Canepa and Ellyce Ironmonger are learning to find a place in Paul Westhead's up-tempo system.
- Bob Clark of the R-G gives us an in-depth introduction to E.J. Singler. The freshman from Medford has a lot of things going for him, including a well-established comfort zone for playing at Mac Court.
- Of course, we're not completely lacking football news. Rob Moseley gives us links to the latest bowl projections. I would normally pass on this stuff, but I see Phil Steele still isn't a believer. He predicts Oregon will go 2-4 in the second half. What's odd is he has Cal running the table starting this week. Seriously, Phil? Are you even considering how these teams look on the field week to week? Cal's going to beat Oregon State, Arizona, and Stanford, but Oregon will lose to all three?
- Gary Horowitz of the Stateman Journal caught up with Chip Kelly, who says the Ducks will remain focused week-to-week right through the civil war. Funny...Kelly said he congratulated the team Wednesday for being half-way-through Pac-10 champs. Evidently some of the guys clapped in celebration, until they realized Chip was being sarcastic.
- In case you missed yesterday's practice notes.
- Aaron Fentress of The Oregonian reports that former Duck lineman Mark Lewis has been signed to the Seattle Seahawks' practice roster.
As always, if you stumble upon some good, please share in the comments. [UPDATE -jtlight] I've added some videos after the jump, incliding a bunch of basketball team interview and Chip Kelly on PTI, so make sure to check them out.

Maybe Steele is bitter about last year, and his pumping up of Oregon’s secondary prior to the season’s kickoff.

2 weeks ago I posted on Steele’s blog. I said that he had the Ducks outside his top 50 and asked if he had changed his mind and had them back in the top 50. This was after Cal and WSU, but before the UCLA game. He didn’t believe they were top 50 even at that point. Here is what he wrote in an e-mail response to my comment.
Phil Steele wrote, in response to marinecorpsduck:
Many of my predictions and forecasts with the Ducks will be re-evaluated after this weekend if they are able to knock off a strong UCLA team at the Rose Bowl. I am not completely sold on the offense just yet and the loss of their top defensive player and coverman Walter Thurmond will eventually catch up to them in the passing game. So to answer your question, they are on the outside looking in to me right now but a good win against a strong UCLA defense could reverse some of my thinking for the following week. Thanks for writing, Phil
So apparently the Ducks didn’t do enough to reverse his thinking even though they were able to “knock off a strong UCLA team at the Rose Bowl.” I don’t even know what his thinking is now. There’s no rational explanation.
Guy behind me at Autzen says "why do the fans yell 'OOO' when we are on D?" He then proceeds to yell "DEEEEEEEE" on every defensive play for the rest of the game. As Carlos Mencia would say, "Dee DeeDee".

He does a good job over, but it really makes me think less of him that he can’t just come out and be like, well, I screwed up, I was wrong about this team. We’ll see if he does that before the end of the season.

Me too. To be honest with you, his pre-season predictions worried me originally because I know he’s usually pretty accurate. The fact that he can’t re-evaluate is making me lose respect for any evaluations he does going forward, Ducks or not.
Maybe this goes back to our little “integrity” conversation we had about Chip and Blount. He can’t change his mind for the sake of consistency or some people will think he has no integrity.

Yep. I’m not saying that someone has to drink the kool-aid and say “oh the Ducks are the best team ever”, but to have them potentially outside the top 50 just makes you look ridiculous.
Guy behind me at Autzen says "why do the fans yell 'OOO' when we are on D?" He then proceeds to yell "DEEEEEEEE" on every defensive play for the rest of the game. As Carlos Mencia would say, "Dee DeeDee".

And here’s the thing – it’s a PREDICTION. People get these wrong all the time. If they were always right, Steele should be the richest man in America (provided he’s not morally against gambling).
I think Kelly made the right call in reversing the Blount decision, but at least I can see where people are coming from when they question his integrity. But when all you’re doing is making predictions, no one cares if you change your mind! We don’t expect Steele to be Nostradamus! In this case, it’s more a lack of integrity to stubbornly refuse to update his prognosis than it is to continue to be wrong.

I agree. He had plenty of reasoning behind the pre-season deal. But to sit there right now and say “well I still don’t know if they are top 50” just throws all of your credibility away.

I didn’t really buy his reasonings in pre-season. They were primarily the OLine and the new Coach. Sure, our OLine didn’t have a lot of starts, but a lot of them got plenty of playing time. And new head coaches are unquantifiable, and just a “gut check”

His predictions don’t really follow his rationale (…WTIII injury will catch up with the Ducks).
He has Oregon beating UW in Seattle next week. Forget what we/he thought to start the season, Locker might be the best QB Oregon faces the rest of the year. But the Ducks get that win? And lose to first year starters for USC, Stanford, Arizona, and also at home to some combination of Canfield/Moevao?
I don’t even disagree that the upcoming schedule could send the Ducks backwards if 1) they suffer more catastrophic injuries on either side of the ball, and 2) the offense starts sputtering again. But for Steele to still deny Oregon as a top 50 team after wins against Utah and Cal (who he still has tabbed to finish no. 2 in conference). That’s bordering insanity.

Something has to happen, seriously. I don’t hate the Beavers. I’m one of those fans that pretty much cheers for the Beavers except for Civil War week. I know a lot of people that feel the same way. A few friends of mine are thinking about this:
Maybe on weeks where the Ducks are playing an away game and the Beavers don’t play during the same time slot we’ll buy some cheap tickets to watch the Beavs but show up in all Ducks gear so they know the Ducks are helping support them.
I know this is not going to go over well at all with the contingent of the Ducks fan base that hates the Beavers, but there are a ton of Duck fans out there in the same boat as me.
Guy behind me at Autzen says "why do the fans yell 'OOO' when we are on D?" He then proceeds to yell "DEEEEEEEE" on every defensive play for the rest of the game. As Carlos Mencia would say, "Dee DeeDee".

but I would at least want to see them help themselves. They’re turning down big paydays (Penn State) and not even selling out National TV games against the #1 team in the country (USC last year). I wonder if this has anything to do with ther slow starts over the years
we can talk about how it keeps them out of the polls or national limelight, but what about building fan enthusiasm? If your fans are constantly being subjected to “finish strong” seasons, they don’t have a lot of incentive to “jump on the bandwagon” from the start.

Part of it probably is
Its also why they don’t get the respect we do. Under MB we often started strong and faded at the end but due to starting strong we got lots of respect.
Riley needs to go IMHO, he is not a good coach at making adjustments. His teams get worse as the game goes on, not better.

I think Riley is a great coach for the Beavs
he brings a national presence to that school that they didn’t have before he was there (the first time and second time) …especially with his NFL experience.
Part of the problem with their “in game” coaching comes from the coordinators and assistants being able to communicate what is happening on the field to the players. Look at the Civil War game last year, their DB’s were making terrible adjustments on our run game (part off that is on Riley, sure, but the D-Coor and the DB coach need to recognize that and make the adjustments).

Oh I agree that loss is on Riley (I was using the run game as an example of how it’s not all his fault and that he needs to leave), but you have to admit, he has done a great job in his two stints there building the ability to recruit and get talent. OSU was at where WSU is at now before he showed up.

Ken Goe makes some excuses for the Beaver fans. But also has some historical perspective as well. Great job by the Ducks building their base for the last 20+ years. It couldn’t have happened without on the field success. But the Oregon Athletic Department has done a spectacular job in building the alumni and fan base in Portland.

so i was reading through the comments on this article, bad idea
but i happened upon this little nugget of information from a Tim Tebow fan defending FL scheduling
Also, Fla only has 1 Div 1AA schools on schedule. Charleston Southern. Troy and Fla Int’l are Div 1A. They also have never had 2 Div 1AA schools on schedule. NEVER

SEC fans are the biggest goons out there
Always the first ones to point out an opponents’ weak schedule ( = anything non-SEC), then turn around and defend the common practice scheduling all home OOC games against weak teams. Must be nice to have 8 home games a year (Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn) only Vanderbilt (w/ 6 home games) doesn’t play at least 7 games this year

Speaking of fucktards
I was flipping through the channels last night when I got sucked into watching everyone’s favorite retired coach Luu Holtz say with a straight face that he thought the winner of the USC/ND game would have an inside track for the NC game. Pardon me but what the f&ck?!? How in the hell can ND have an inside track on anything, they are ranked 25th for God’s sake. They play a horrible schedule and don’t belong to the darling conference SEC which we all know has a legal and god given right to have at least one team placed in the NC game each year. I could not believe what I was hearing. USC maybe, if things fall into place but ND c’mon. I usually don’t get involved in the Holtz bashing because I sort of relate it to beating an old man who suffers from dymensia but this has gone to far. Coah Lou just needs to start his own ND channel and go talk his bullshit there. ‘All ND all the time.’

They'll make a BCS game
If they beat USC and win out. Why, because they’re ND and it doesn’t matter that they suck because TV loves them.

Maybe if everyone boycotts that game on TV it would send a message to the BCS and the TV companies. Who wants to start the campaign?
Guy behind me at Autzen says "why do the fans yell 'OOO' when we are on D?" He then proceeds to yell "DEEEEEEEE" on every defensive play for the rest of the game. As Carlos Mencia would say, "Dee DeeDee".

If they beat USC and win out
They’ll actually deserve a BCS game. But a NC berth? No, unless multiple SEC and Big 12 teams crap the bed several times each. ND has their offense going pretty well now, but their defense is still terrible, which is why I expect at least a 14 point USC victory this weekend.

Best Comment of they day
Referring to this article where Ken Goe Compares the Ducks to Paris Hilton.
Posted by BandonGolfer
October 15, 2009, 6:06PM
The Paris Hilton meme from Bevo cheerleaders is growing a bit tiresome. The McCain people tried it on Obama last year, and what they got for it was the second worst beatdown in all of November 2008.
By way of research, I fired up the big plasma and loaded dual DVD players with the 2008 Civil War tape and an excerpt of Ms. Hilton’s most famous film appearance. As the Ducks pounded out 694 offensive yards and piled on 65 points, it was the Bevos who seemed the most Paris-like.
Maybe it was a technical glitch, but I swear to gawd, when Paysinger is sprinting by Moevao with the pick-6 for points 59 thru 65, Lyle shouts something like “whaddaya trying to do, dude, gag me?”
