Chip Kelly Press Conference Reaction Thread

Here's your open thread. Here's the University press release, and Moseley's piece on the press conference.

At the earliest, LeGarrette Blount would be reinstated by the Stanford game, on November 7th. According to Kelly,

After speaking with a number of nationally renowned professionals in the field, which included Dr. Harry Edwards and Tony Dungy, I came to the conclusion that leaving the door open for LeGarrette’s potential return as an active player was the best solution

He has a rigid set of conditions he must live up to and there are certainly no guarantees in place. This merely provides him the opportunity for my reconsideration in the future should he meet those demands.

As terrible as this situation has been, I think that Kelly has done an excellent job. It's unorthodox for sure, but I appreciate that our coach is honest about the situation, and is open to change if that is what is best for the player, and the team, in the long run. Kelly made it clear that this is not a football decision, it is a personal decision. LeGarrette will not have an easy road, and it's all on him now. As Kelly said, if LeGarrette can fulfill the plan that's in place, he deserves to play football again.

Leave your comments and opinions below. Also, after the jump is the press conference video.

Kelly is making clear that this is very much about an individual.

He’s also stated, “there’s a distinct possibility, he could never be back.”

Kelly talking about when to announce this plan. I like how the University is being up front about this right now, rather than just announcing at some point, hey, Blount’s gonna play!

Kelly makes a good point that there had to be finality to the situation. There could not open ended questions about when Blount would come back if there was an “indefinite” suspension. It allowed the team to get past it.

Kelly: “This is not a football decision”

Also, there are “behavioral and academic things that [LeGarrette] has to meet” to be reinstated.

Kelly: “If he can meet what we have in place for him, he deserves to play football again.”

Though I really don’t know how the team will respond to Blount being back for the game, if he does indeed meet the standards Kelly has laid out.

anyone wants to know how to get out of half a day of high school…i’ll fill you in but anyway here are some quotes from kelly that i like:

“Not a football decision, it’s a human being decision.”
“My decision, and my decision only.”
“A distinct possibility he will never play here again.”

He did sound like though that he was optimistic about reinstatement after usc. here’s the thing tho, and this is why i am now on board with the whole thing. not ONCE did chip or bellotti mention football stats, nfl draft, anything of that nature. this was purely a process that lgb himself started with his actions, including the fact that it was HIM who initiated the call to boise state, not ck, mb or otherwise.

JOHN CANZANO SHOULD RESIGN!

This ignorant poor soul should resign immediately from the Oregonian! He’s an embarrassment to the great state of Oregon….even more than Blount. His past comments and today’s comments on OTL echo with both racism and bigotry! He’s lost what little credibility he had left! He called for the arrest of Blount but never once said the fan and player who slapped Blount should be arrested! Why John? Because there white? In this country you have a right to protect yourself. If another player or fan strikes you with either a closed or opened hand you have the right to hit back. Yes you have the right to protect yourself. To be cussed at by drunk fans is one thing, but to be swung at and hit is another!! John also hinted the reason Oregon wants Blount back is because Oregon has a chance IF THEY BEAT USC for the Rose Bowl. John made these remarks after Kelly’s press conference. And Kelly strongly noted Blount couldn’t return until after the Standford game……..by then we have already played USC! Is John a reported? Because if he was he wouldn’t have made that comment on national tv for the whole world to see and hear! Blount wont be back for the USC game and John indicates that’s why Kelly is reinstating him!! John Canzano is stupid, so stupid in fact he can’t remember what a coach says during a press conference!!

Or the racist Oregon fan when during a basketball game kept referring to J. Catron as “Bubba” and “nigger” until finally I had a enough and poured the contents of my spit bottle all over him! Don’t be so naive to think this isn’t race related. Prove that it’s not race related! The Nebraska player who assaulted a fan after the Missouri game received a ONE game suspension for his acts! Chip Kelly

is an outstanding coach and an even better human being. I felt suspending the young man for the season had effectively destroyed any football career he may have hoped to have and that was way too harsh. I felt he deserved a second chance and an opportunity to make it right for himself, and for the fans and the University. Its tremendous that Chip Kelly could revisit his decision and give Blount a second chance.

Speaks well about the Chip Kelly and Oregon. Good luck guys for the season and hope that Blount makes the comeback and becomes a success.

i agree

he made one thing very clear both to me and i think to the football community as a whole today, and that was that regardless of football skill, life after this season or the national reaction, he made this decision based on one thing only. Legarratte Blount the human being. Frankly i was on board with the season long suspension, but like a lot of us i feel now that my reaction was based partly on the overflowing frustrations from that night. None of LGBs actions were, and will ever be condoned, but frankly the fact that he did not leave and go play DII ball somewhere, that he didn’t leave entirely, and the fact that HE was the one that initiated the contact with boise state says to me that he realizes the implications of his actions. Giving this man a chance to be successful in not only his life after the U of O, but in showing to the world that he should not be judged for the rest of his life based just on one night shows that chip kelly is willing to say “mea culpa” and open a door that’s just wide enough for lgb to sneak through, if he continues to do the work and have the continued personal growth that he’s had since the incident.

Shouldn't be reinstated as a starter

I’m not sure I agree or disagree with this current move especially after the team had worked hard to get the media to finally forget about the incident. I respect Kelly’s decision (after all he’s the couch) but I would like to think that Blount doesn’t get to be a starter for the team after reinstatement. He’s working to earn his way back onto the field, not his previous position. Plus it sends the wrong message to the guys who have taken over in the position and earned the right to be starters by their demonstarted skills in handling the game on and off the field. This is a teachable moment for both Blount and the rest of the team on rewarding players for hard work, fair paly, and second chances. I hope all parties involved take the opportunities and make the best of it.

Without a doubt, LaMichael will be the feature back

Followed by Kenjon, Alston and Co. Blount may get 5-7 reps in the remaining games that he plays

Formerly, thats a no-go.

I would be absolutely flabergasted if he if Blount was automatically made the starter. He’ll have to work his butt off to even see the field, as he’ll be behind at least LMJ, Barner, and Alston. He won’t be given anything.

I see an end of season Blount maybe coming off the bench first.

He has an entirely different skill set than LMJ, Barner, and Alston.

Don't think so...

He is not by any means the prototypical fast accelerating, small, and shifty punt returner body type. He will surely see the field though.

6-2, 240, I say stick him at linebacker! Not really of course…

Agreed,,,,,I think blount would be third string at the most probably fourth string

With that said, if our offense line continues to gel he would be one hell of a force to bring into the game against a tired defense.

He ruined the night for myself and my kids……..I think maybe he should send us a check ……Go Ducks!

but if you want family entertainment that doesn’t include any chance for violence, take them to the theater, or a symphony concert. With sport comes aggression, with aggression comes an occasional poor lack of judgment. If you’re willing to write off Blount forever, that’s your prerogative and I respect that, but you’re in the minority.

Kelly proves what a great coach he is...

with this decision. Like a lot of you I’m 50/50 on this thing; however, if you listen closely to what coach Kelly was saying during the press conference you can see that this is no way saying that Blount will be come back and immediatly be the number one guy. The quote has been posted on here already, but I love it when a coach says things like “this isn’t a football decsion it’s a human diecsiuon.”

Great stuff. it showed me that coach Kelly is a guy that respects his players, acts as a general (as cliche as that is), but also has the all-important-trait of humility — a trait that all good teachers must have — the ability to critically think about and analyze a situation after it has happened and say “you know what…I may have been wrong on this one.” That is something that is so rare in sports, especially in college football where coaches are prideful and it’s almost always there way or the highway.

I find it refreshing (as a teacher myself) that we have a coach who is willing to make the unpopular decision (and let’s face it, almost everyone is 50/50 on this thing so he’s bound to upset everyone) for the sake of the player and his teammates. Robert Smith said it best this morning: the coach is like the father for 100+ football players…who knows the pulse of the family better than the coach? People who disagree with the decision can come up with all the theories they want (call me naive but I believe Kelly when he says this is all about LG the person and not LG the football player), but I can’t begin to tell you how much respect I have for Kelly for showing humility, and the ability to see that Blount was putting in the effort, and there should be some hope for a guy who is genuinely trying to rehabilitate himself.

Sorry this is long, but today I am extremely proud to be a Duck fan because we have a coach who isn’t pompous, self-serving, or all about the “W’s”…we have a coach who cares about his players, and anyone who thinks this will affect recruiting…well, you’re right…players around the country will see a coach who cares about their players beyond the field, and that is something that is rare in this age of college football.

I don’t think LG will even see the field as a starter this year (and I think that fact is getting lost with all of the Canzano’s and such who fail to see the nuances of this rehabilitation plan), and if by some chance LG does hold up his end of the bargain then I think it’s safe to say that we’ll be seeing him as a third stringer…but even that is a big time victory for LG and for giving him hope — just because he’s going to see the field again doesn’t mean the gameplan deviates from what’s been working.

Congrats, Chip…you made a great decision today.

There's probably not much that I can add at this point.

The press conference acknowledged what LeGarrette has accomplished in the past four weeks. He has shown genuine contrition, been a commendable teammate when he could have walked away from the program and school, and made the most of the opportunity awarded to him in the punishment.

I supported the punishment when it was laid down, and still do. I feel the consequences were appropriate given the totality of his past transgressions and everything that followed the punch. However, it also showed that the team and school would not turn their backs on the man.

I’m not sure how I feel about the prospect of LeGarrette rejoining the team, but I do know that the manner in which he has carried himself since that night has pleased the coaches and athletic department, who are willing to acknowledge the positive steps he has taken and afford him the opportunity to earn his way back if he keeps making those steps. After all, they do reduce jail sentences for good behaviour.

On a side note, Chip must not enjoy the 24 hours before a game. Off the top of my head I can think of two Jim Rome interviews, and now a press conference that is sure to be nationally scrutinized within 24hrs of a game.

Here we are, Yellow-billed Dudes and Doodettes,

This is Life. What are we going to do? I think that I know. I think that we are going out to Autzen tomorrow, some perhaps only in their minds, and I think that we are going to watch a football game that is played with passion and intensity that will surprise and affect all who have the privilege of watching it. I think that this team has now gelled, as many opined that it would, several games into the season. There was evidence sufficient against Cal; the WSU game is going to be pure joy. A band of brothers has lost one irreplaceable part on the field of battle and has been given the opportunity to visualize and support the return of another who was considered lost.

In the Prodigal Son, the Father could see his lost son approaching from afar. He could not rush out to meet him; he had to wait until the Prodigal returned on his own. This is a timeless, powerful lesson in each of our lives. May we remember and Pass It On.

Saw this

So we’re all being played for fools? This isn’t as magnanimous of Kelly as we think – it’s people putting pressure on Kelly, Bellotti and the university. I understand LGB’s parents making pleas, but there are lawyers and outside organizations involved. I’m not sure if this should change how I feel about this whole situation.

So I thought about it a little more. This isn’t magnanimity or grace from Kelly. It’s not work ethic and devotion to correcting the issue by Blount. It’s threatened litigation.

Ugh. Well, at least no one can blame Kelly for being self-serving. It was either get Blount a program for reinstatement or the university gets sued.

I don't buy what that story is selling.

At least not the way they are selling it. The only named source was the head of the advocacy group, and he was praising both the parents and Mike Belotti. Not exactly the sound of a strong-arming lawyer, IMO. There was only one unnamed source that actually said there was no good intentions by the Ducks, and he was only quoted once.

With regard to LeGarrette talking to the lawyer every day, I think this may be the story. Perhaps it wasn’t LeGarrette’s idea to contact Boise State; perhaps all of the ‘right moves’ Blount made were simply advised by this attorney and are only a means to an end, rather than a real show of contrition. I hope not; but if this story is smoke, I think that is where the fire is.

It wasn't the first time I'd been kicked in the cherries and called a rat by a woman, but it was the first time I didn't mind.

"This isn’t magnanimity or grace from Kelly."

Well, it sure isn’t about Grace Kelly. Ex-president of the Uof0 & its Law School asked once at my son’s graduation, “What do you have if you have 3 empty seats on a bus load of lawyers going over a cliff?” His answer, “Wasted space.”

I looked up the story of ‘the lawyer’ on CBS news and it was listed under the category heading of “Rumor Mill.” After sleeping on it, I think that I choose to believe Chip and his Gang of Four. I can see how the Beefer fans, and their ilk, might not. For me to believe that anything from our athletic department is racist, well, I’m just not going to put any energy into that right now. Somebody show me specifics, i will be open to listen. Right now, I’ve had enough drama. Let’s play some football.

This just doesn't add up....

1) There was no threat of legal action, according to the article. And can you imagine how well that’d play out if it happened? Blount would have looked TERRIBLE. Lawsuit would have never been an option. As Bellotti said about the legal counsel: “That’s never been an issue in any of these discussions.”

2) It’s obvious Blount’s mom’s pleas made a difference. I think if you read the article, it makes clear, that’s what the discussions were. The family had legal counsel, but that counsel did nothing. Blount’s family was a big part in this.

3) That alone would have done nothing, IMO. I do believe that outside voices made a difference. Harry Edwards talked with Blount for 6 hours, not the 10 minutes this “source” claims.

4) Horn sounds like a douche. He first lies about the impact of other situations, and then: “Horn said Blount’s mother, the presence and power of Carey, and his own organization were a constant.” Way to toot your own horn there buddy.

Basically, this is a lesson on what happens when you have a single source for an article. Reading it carefully, and reading it along with the many other articles out there, it’s clear that Blount’s parents had an impact, but so did the many other people in the situation. It was LeGarrette’s actions that put him back on the field, not some words, or threats. Again, it was 3 weeks from this legal meeting, til a plan for reinstatement was put in place.
