LIGHTING UP THE PORTLAND BRIDGES IN HUSKY COLORS THIS WEEK?! ARE THEY FRIGGIN SERIOUS?!
Please fellow Duck fans take a look at this story on Duck Sports News: http://www.ducksportsnews.com/blog/2009/10/dsn-lighting-portland-bridges-purple-gold-what/
THE WILLAMETTE LIGHT BRIGADE IS PUBLICLY PRONOUNCING ON THEIR WEBSITE THAT THEY'RE LIGHTING THE BRIDGES OVER THE RIVER PURPLE & GOLD THIS WEEK IN HONOR OF UW AND THEY'RE ACTUALLY CALLING IT "HUSKY HERITAGE WEEK"! My first reaction was "are they friggin serious?! what state do they think they're in!?" and that bewilderment quickly turned to cold fury. I already emailed all the ATQ staff today about this but I thought it couldn't hurt to put a fan post up too. Duck fans NEED to protest this. It just seems like a slap in the face to all Duck Portlanders to make OUR FAIR OREGON CITY APPEAR TO ROOT FOR THE HUCKING FUSKIES!!!
You can send angry protest emails to information@lightthebridges.org and check out the official announcement at lightthebridges.org. I also sent angry emails to the Oregonian & KATU sports staffs. If this isn't in the local sports news tonight they're not doing their jobs!
EVENING UPDATE: After further research, it's become clear that the Light Brigade is less to blame and we should instead direct our fury at the Office of the Multnomah County District 1 Commissioner, Deborah Kafoury (her email is district1@co.multnomah.or.us) who would have had to approve the lights. She's quoted in this Oregonian article as being the Multnomah County official who worked with the Light Brigade to set a system were anyone can pay $100/day to light the Morrison bridge whatever color they want. Certainly Commissioner Kafoury could have taken a moment on behalf of her constituents to check a calender and refuse an a$$hole Husky fan's hundred bucks.
In quacking fidelity & for today, FURY,

I mean, I don't give a flying shit and all, but...
Why in the world are they randomly picking the University of Washington to “support”? I thought it was just random color choices for the bridge lights, but this passage:
Purple and gold this week to celebrate the University of Washington and support the Huskies!
This passage is just weird.
Addicted To Quack [dot] com; Six-hundred and ninety-four yards of total offense.
Also, it’s good to know that Husky alums put more importance on the colors lights on a city than rebuilding their craphole of a stadium.

Well and that's what makes me so appalled.--that they actually very intentionally supporting the Huskies
I really wouldn’t care if it was other colors besides Husky colors and I’d be way less mad if it was an accident. But I respect other people’s right not to care, that’s why I put the poll in, kind of curious if the majority of Ducks fans are as pissed as I am.

Some readers on the original Duck Sports News story are smartly pointing out that the Willamette Light Brigade website clearly details how people can pay a few hundred bucks to light the bridges whatever color they want. And surely some Husky fan is rolling with laughter at Duck fan fury, but that doesn’t change the fact that some city bureaucrat needed to approve this. They did NOT have to purposefully call it “Husky Heritage Week” and any bureaucrat with some pride in his state (and some spine) could have refused the small amount of money and stopped it.

Ultimately, I think the department at Multnomah County that controls the bridges got duped here. From what I see on the LightTheBridges site, it only costs $100 a day, through the non-profit, to pay for the county to light the bridge in whatever color you like.
Someone didn’t bother to check the calendar. My only gripe is that some dim-wit didn’t have the sense to think, “Gee support the University of Washing by lighting bridges in Portland, that sure seems a little odd.”
I can’t see it, so I’m going to pretend it never happened. If I was still living in Portland, I’d be real tempted to do something wrong. Anyone know how much it might cost to fly an Oregon flag from the Space Needle?
By the grace of Juju, we all are day-to-day.
Yep, moronic Multnomah County bureaucrat’s to blame indeed as verified by this July Oregonian story: http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2009/07/gotta_favorite_color_you_can_s.html I am tempted to do something wrong but at this point I’ve posted all over the friggin place and it would take the cops about one google search to figure out who defaced the lights =}. I am less mad at the Light Brigade now and more appalled at their stupidity.

Alot...
I’m pretty sure the City of Seattle controls that and only puts up sports flags when the team is in an important game (ie. Husky Bowl game, Seahawks Playoff game, Mariner’s Playoff game, Sonics Playoff Game…er I mean…Storm Playoff Game.)
I think the Cougs get it when they win the occasional Apple Cup. I could be wrong.
By the grace of Juju, we all are day-to-day.
They do...
they bought it one year before the Apple Cup, although I think it just slipped through the cracks and nobody really realized what happened…until it happened.
Wow! How lame is that
Sucks, but pretty crafty. You would think somebody would have stopped it but the county is broke these days. Even dirty fuskie money is needed I guess.
Go Ducks!
Maybe the donor/booster ought to consider giving that cash to the university for their save-our-crappy-stadium fund.
By the grace of Juju, we all are day-to-day.
It is beyond salvation
A much needed bye week; and two whole weeks to focus the inner hatred of UW even moreso than normal.
Locker...Welcome to my profile, You will be formally introduced by Juju at a later date, 10/23 to be more specific!
oh, it's heritage week, all right
…..a heritage they’re just getting used to: losing to oregon
Aha. There IS a rivalry!
It is easy to see(ha ha) that these lights are just about as far away from Fusky Stadium (can I really call it a ‘stadium’? No. Fusky Field has a better ring to it) this week end as their safety was from the goal line last week.
I think it's pretty creative.
I’m not mad. It sucks but actually pretty smart of the UW alum that thought of it. A bunch of friends pool together 50 bucks each and get rival fans pissed. I wish I had thought of it.
Who gives a sh!t?
Its not like the lights spel out go Huskies or something. And it isn’t in Eugene on campus , its in Portland for god sake. Would Husky fans be appalled if some Oregon boosters paid for a green and yellow lighted bridge in Tacoma? I find it hilarious that everyone is up in arms about this, and Clownzano dedicated a article to it.
I love beating OSU....but nothing is better than DESTROYING the fuskies.
I think it’s kinda funny. They won this one. But, they also didn’t donate to their own school, but to Portland. I’m good with that.
The best thing to do is find a way to share some green and yellow in Seattle without tempting the mischievous god of Juju.

They have done quite a bit of tempting themselves
i almost feel sorry for them that they have upset the juju so much.

Isn't there actually a large contingent of Husky alums in Portland?
I support Takimoto in his effort to support Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.
If only there was a way
to get The Pick spliced into their jumbotron feed…
Uncle Phil has the bribery cash to make that happen.
Or to hire the Goodyear blimp or some other vehicle that can broadcast it from above.

But they will also be Orange during Civil War week.
Hi, my name is Connor. Except over on ATQ where I am known as, "JConnor."
Apparently, us Ducks are cheapscapes!

Ok, ok
But it’s like $100, eh?
We should just buy the bridges for Pete’s sake.
Or buy Lake Washington and drain it.

well I never agreed with a damn thing Canzano wrote before so it's refreshing not to have to start now
“The hostile reaction from a few outraged Ducks fans is surprising. Buck’s witty gesture should be greeted with a tip of the cap, not taunts about how badly Oregon will beat Washington on Saturday. It was a clever idea. Give him credit.”
I’ll give the a$$hole Husky fan lawyer credit for his cleverness (and why am I not at all surprised that it was a lawyer) but that doesn’t mean I have to “tip my cap.” It wasn’t a classy move on his part, it was a smart one, and it was specifically meant to goad Duck fans. Ripping on Washington to specifically goad Husky fans is just responding in kind. You make no friggin’ sense Canzano.
And I STILL say that the County officials should have not been such ridiculous cheapskates and should have put a stop to it. I blame them above all much more than clever Mr. Buck.

+1, well done UW
I gotta say I love it. I love stuff like this. Its like a giant frat prank one city just played on another. I hate that UW did it too us, but I tip my hat to the creativity. Who cares about “classy” in this case. Its all in good fun and its a hell of a lot cooler than another stale Onterrio Smith joke. The county should not have put a stop to that, the city of Portland has no obligation to the U of O. WE as Duck fans should have come up with this first.
The Huskies got embarassed on the football field on Saturday, but us Ducks got embarrassed in the “awesomely creative show of pride” game this year. I know we’re better fans, we’ve just got to show it next year.
I knew that the bridge lights were available for sale at a reasonable price, I just never thought about it as being used for something like this.
Lets stop bitching and start planning our revenge. Can someone get a Duck ‘O’ on the space needle? Can we legitimately purchase a billboard or ad space in downtown Seattle? How about a tv commercial spot on the Seattle local news? Let 100 greased pigs lose in Pike Place Market?
Don’t get mad, get even!
