Happy Happy I Hate Washington Day! It's finally here! And we still have many hours until football. So here's a bit of quack to get you through the next few hours
- Ken Woody looks at what a team must do coming out of a bye week to be successful. He says that teams must keep the gameplan simple, and not get caught up with having extra prep time. Keep a lookout for how the defense looks early. If they look confused like they did against BSU, things could get a bit messy.
- The Husky players don't seem to be taking the attitude of UW Dawg Pound's John Berkowitz, and seem to be putting some real hatred into the rivalry. That's what five victories in a row will do. In some ways it's fun to have this rivalry have some meaning. In other ways, it's not.
- Rob Moseley talks about the key to the game, whether or not Oregon will be "caught napping." But after the Boise State game, I just don't see these Ducks overlooking anyone. As Chip says, every game is a season, and I think the players have taken that to heart.
Lastly, a video clip to get you excited. We're gonna take a deviation from Takimoto's party guide and go back to when Oregon football was first becoming relevant again. While "The Pick" put Oregon football on the map for good, Terry Obee's "49 Special" guaranteed a spot in Oregon history for the Bill Musgrave led teams, and helped propel the Ducks the next year to their first bowl game in 26 years.

Perenial Freedom Bowl Contenders
But I have so many friends that went to Oregon and even played for Oregon that it is really tough for me to really hate…hate…if you know what I mean.
Let me share a brief story:
This will be one of the few Oregon/Washington clashes that I have missed over the last 35 years. Traditionally I always attend the game with lifelong friends who went to Oregon. During the Don James years it was pretty sad to be an Oregon fan because UW was 14-3 against the Webfoots. Despite that there were some great games but UW just kept coming out ahead in the end which would just crush these guys and unfortunately the party mood afterwards. You really begin to feel sorry for these guys. You think to yourself it would be a much better party if Oregon wins once in awhile…you then come to your senses and say nahhhh!
I think we all remember 1994 for some reason. As usual UW was marching down the field to put it away late in the game and the pick happened. Tough loss for a Husky fan but my Duck friends were in a better mood after the game so I was actually happy for them…of course I didn’t realize that history was about to make a momentous change.
I was at a friends house in Eugene after the game and I was sitting between a couple former Ducks who are pretty big guys. They asked me, “John what do you really think, seriously I think we have turned the corner, where do you think we are headed?” I replied thoughtfully without missing a beat, “That was an impressive win and I think we can now safely say that the Ducks have moved up to a level where they will be perenial Freedom Bowl contenders!”
They proceeded to tackle me into the carpet and give me the old dutch rub treatment while laughing histerically.
Anyway those moments are priceless. I liked winning every year but it wasn’t as fun until it was competitive and they could also share in the fun once in awhile…like every five or six years…however as we know the shoe has been on the other foot for a long time.
So anyway I am really looking forward to a competitive game today. We all know Oregon is the better team on paper just like Washington was in 1994 but anything can happen and that adds to the fun.

It was a gamble going there, and he knew it. He doesn’t wanna be some sort of gadget QB at the pro level, he wants to be a true NFL quarterback. And I honestly think tOSU gives him the best shot, with four years of seasoning in a pro-style system. Think about how his draft stock would be viewed coming out of the CK Spread or the RichRod Spread. His skill set screams system quarterback, and few NFL teams would risk a franchise-level draft pick on a talented QB who’s unproven in a pro-style offense.

Can’t imagine what it would have been like to deal with Todd Doxey mid-season. They seem to be rallying around each other though, and I think Coach Edsell has done a wonderful job of managing his players’ emotions.

But, yes, he has not been effective this season…Our defense has serious issues right now.

PreGame HARD-CORE! My suggestion, go with my awesome whiskey sours. 4 parts whiskey, 2 parts lemon juice, 1 part simple syrup (you can just use some powdered sugar). That will get you effed up quickly.
