Addicted To Quack Podcast, Take 1

We finally did it! Last night, myself, Dave, and Dominic got together and record the first ever ATQ podcast.

We discussed the win over the Huskies, how the Ducks defense defended Jake Locker, and the emergence of Cliff Harris. We also talked at length about the upcoming USC game, the all important turnover battle, which team is under more pressure, how Matt Barkley will fare in Autzen, and made some game predictions.

As this is our first podcast, feedback is appreciated. If the response is good, we may even do the next one live, and have some community interaction.

Good stuff guys

Another thought on Chip Kelly’s playcalling, I wonder if Oregon throws a lot in the early going as a way to counter the hype-up defense at the beginning of a game. Especially on the road, the opposing defense is fired up that first series and ready to stuff any run play that isn’t blocked perfectly. With a couple quick passes, now that defense is backing off a bit and you can get into your regular sets.

UW was also stacking the box early

And it did give Masoli some confidence that he was back.

I think it helps 2 fold

1. It softens up the LB’s by making them pause before they come up into the line to stop the run, so that later when they run the ball, LMJ and Barner have a full head of speed as they hit the holes.

2. It tires out the D line and LBs when they are having to rush the QB, stop turn and chase down a TE or short pass to the WR, so that later when Oregon is running their hurry up offense the D is barely able to get set into position before the ball is snapped.

on the replay last night...

Kelly nonchalantly (sp?) mentioned how the defense dictates the plays. They overloaded the box, so they threw. once they were balanced, they ran. it’s crazy how everyone on the team automatically knows what the situation dictates. if they overload to one side, they throw to the opposite side. not matched up right on a 2 pt conversion or fg? ok, coach trusts them to check off and run the correct play.

i think it helps a lot that if they mess up, instead of getting crazy red-faced coach yelling at them, they get visor-wearin’ Chip laughing and encouraging like on the INT in the end zone against UCLA. he did the same thing when the punter had his one shank of the game. sure the game was no longer in question but most coaches wouldn’t do that. ever.

Plus, i fully appreciate that Chip Kelly calls games the same way most of us play video games. outstanding.

You should really make that an actual podcast file. Like, add the right metadata and such so that it actually shows up as a podcast in iTunes and on people’s iPods. Better yet, set up a feed that people can subscribe too in iTunes.

I’m not sure how the metadata will show up though.

I think that one of the widgets would be more in line with what people are expecting from a “Here’s our podcast” post. It has all of the nice buttons that normally would be useful (previous episodes and a link to subscribe). The vertical one also fits nicely into the left side panel, since both are a standard size. (That’s what Team Speed Kills does for their TalkShoe podcast.)

Now 2-0 in Husky Stadium with a win each for LSU and Oregon.

Love the Go Ducks! spirit, but kind of lame. I greatly prefer the weekly podcast at goduckspodcast.com. Those guys just started at the beginning of this season, and even in week 1 blew the doors off of this.

By the way, their podcast is available on iTunes.

In truth, I’m just an honest Duck Fan expressing my honest opinion. I have no connection to Lord Beverage, Muchas G or goduckspodcast.com.

Beyond which, seriously, you can’t actually think this podcast is nearly as good. I’d like to see it become so, but reality is reality, and now it’s just not.

I appreciate you joining ATQ to comment about our “lame” podcast with the only real criticism being that it isn’t available through iTunes. We did it to supplement our own work and have no desire to switch to that format. We like ATQ for what it is but are always looking to do new and exciting things. If you have constructive criticism, great.

Listen, I know who Lord Beverage is, but I am not him. In fact, I’ve criticised his crummy name to him, as well as their terrible intro.

Bottom line, I have never had any input into the content of any goduckspodcast.com podcast, I just wait and listen like everyone else. My constructive criticism to you is that it seems you guys are just trying to copy what those guys are doing, but aren’t doing it as well. Also, the joke in your intro, not even a little bit funny.

All I really want is for all podcasts glorifying our magnificient Ducks to be up to snuff, and yours just isn’t yet. I want it to be, but it’s not.

P.S. They link to you, why the instant hostility to them?

Seriously, was it lacking in technical expertise? Did they need to change the time allotment for each of their main areas of analysis? Was it not funny enough?

I’m not looking to get in to a pissing match with anyone. But if you had any class, you wouldn’t come in here and start throwing words around like “ignorant masses”, or calling a podcast that was full of detailed break downs of teams “kind of lame” from people that are frequently quoted and referenced in national media. That won’t work well around here.

I extremely skeptical that you have “no connection” to those guys. But, I’ll humor you, and pretend you don’t. Why bother registering on a site, only to be negative and draw immediate parallels to another site? No actual constructive criticism was given. In paraphrase, you came in and said “It’s lame. This other podcast is better AND it is on iTunes.”

I agree. This was the lamest lame to ever lame. I think I’ve become even more lame listening to this than I could ever before. And I’m really fucking lame to start. A condition I’m sure you know a little bit about.

I think what made it so lame was the following:

1. All the white people talking. What’s their deal? White people are SO 20th century. Also 19th century. 18th. 17th. It keeps going back a while there.

2. Discussing Duck sports. That was a fairly egregious error right there. Very minimal Cal discussion in this podcast. Lame. SO LAME! Up the Cal content and you’d definitely have a winner.

3. Still having problems with the white people.

I mean I’m not even sure why they tried this. After all, there is at least 1 other Ducks podcast out there. 1! Why even get to 2????

Settle Down Everyone! We're All Duck Fans!

Allow me to interject on this exciting day of commenting!

First & foremost, GO Ducks. We’re all Ducks Fans here and that’s what’s important.

Second, I think what happened today is that some friends of the GoDucksPodcast with Lord Beverage & Muchas G listened to the A2Q Podcast this morning and believed it to be an attempt to copy what Muchas G and I are doing on our show. I have not yet listened to the A2Q Podcast, so I have no comment on that, nor do I care. We are all Duck Fans and we should all have our own Podcasts!

Yet, I have been asked to set the table straight…

One of those individuals, Feathers McQuack, commented this morning on A2Q that he thought the A2Q Podcast sounded a lot like the GoDucksPodcast. McQuack’s comment was immediately deleted and he was banned from A2Q. Like it or not, this was fair, albeit subjective criticism from a loyal Ducks fan on a Podcast that was asking for reviews and critiques. The aggressive banning got McQuack’s feathers ruffled, and in turn, McQuack got another fan of the GoDucksPodcast, Zeus Duck, upset as well… leading to the current shape of the comments section above.

My official position on this whole debacle is that Muchas G and I have always been fans of A2Q. We’ve both been daily visitors for some time now, we respect the site and we’ve linked to A2Q on the www.goduckspodcast.com home page since day one. I think it’s a bit of a Beav move to delete McQuack’s comment and ban him from the site when he was giving his honest feedback. I would hope it was not simply because his comment linked to Muchas G and my “competing” podcast. Nevertheless, that is not my call.

In any event – we’re all free to root for the Ducks how we want., so long as it’s the Ducks we’re rooting for. I would hope that the good Duck Fans of A2Q will agree that it’s senseless to fight amongst ourselves, when it’s the Trojans and ultimately the BeavTrash we must unite against.

Bottom line – the GoDucksPodcast with Muchas G and Lord Beverage doesn’t give a DUCK about the drama – we just want to be Ducks fans in our own way and share it with the people who like the Ducks in the same way. If A2Q has a podcast as well, GREAT, GO DUCKS! We will continue to link to A2Q, and we hope that in the name of the Ducks that A2Q would treat their fellow Ducks with the same courtesy.

Anything else would be total and complete BeavTrash.

Sincerely,

Lord Beverage of www.GoDucksPodcast.com

First, we at ATQ have no problem with linking to other sites. Muchas links to the goduckspodcast on a near-weekly basis on our quack fix, and is a valued member of our community.

But, we also don’t allow trolling and spamming on this site, and unfortunately, there were multiple comments that could be considered both trolling and spam. As Dominic stated above, these both originated from your IP address. We value community here, and the posts in question did not benefit our community.

But, trolling isn’t allowed. And that’s what the earlier comments were.

Not to speak for the mods, as they know better than me,

but we had a rash of people using AtQ to plug their own ventures a month or two ago, we all got sick of it and took it to the mods, and they cracked down. I didn’t see the comment in question, but if it was a combination of a plug and an inflammatory comment, then maybe it was out of line. I think the AtQ podcast was simply Jared, Dave, and Dom taking advantage of different media to deliver the normal AtQ style of journalism. Comparing that to your podcast is crazy because they are nothing alike. Yours is a well-edited podcast coming more from a pure fan perspective, while this was more focused on analysis. Different strokes.

I don’t really have a problem with multiple podcasts. I think it’s fine. I just have a problem with the insinuation that Jared, Dom, and Dave all were trying to copy someone else’s podcast. It’s actually quite absurd. Absurd comments are fair game here. It isn’t anything personal – many have fallen into the trap of making a ridiculous comment and suffered the ridicule (Including myself).

Between providing zero constructive criticism, making ridiculous claims that they are trying to copy the format/style of you guys, and calling the podcast “lame” when it has provided thought provoking discussions and breakdowns. It comes off as absurd trolling. I don’t particularly care WHICH fan base you are from, a spamming troll is a spamming troll.

Well – maybe some of us prefer this style of blogger journalism and don’t want to hear an “entertaining” fan soaked homerism.

This was also their first one. And it was more or less an improvisational bit. They admit that they didn’t really plan it out, they just called up, talked, and recorded it, and then shared it with us. Hopefully they continue and can improve on things.

Technical feedback...Not about the audio.

I am sure that I might get blasted for saying this, but I think it is warranted…

I used to work in broadcast media several years ago and I found that listening to you guys was a bit flat. Don’t get me wrong, your content is A+, and is generally exactly what you write in columns. I know how hard it is to talk your way through things and this being your first effort it was good.

My comment about being “flat” meant that there were a lot of “you know,” “uh/um” and “you know what I mean” mixed in with great content. Those “crutch” words allow your thoughts to flow without dead silence mixed in. It almost makes it sound like you didn’t know what you were saying or where you were going with your thought. This was clearly not the case, as you all had valid thoughts and analysis on all the topics discussed. I think you guys were very well prepared, but the “crutch” words made it hard to listen to. I had a hard time losing my “crutches” when I would broadcast as well. It will all come out in the wash.

Again, I realize that it was your first effort and you will no doubt improve. I really appreciate that you took the time to put this together and I know that I will listen to the next podcast and any further you might do. I will listen to this because I know the content is there, just as I come here to read the columns you guys produce.

May we hand you your taints on a silver platter...

Thanks for the great feedback. Just one comment about being prepared. We actually came into this completely cold and catching each other off guard (see my question to Dave about Nick Alliotti). It went something like “hey, you want to try doing a podcast on Sunday? Sure, ok. Let’s call each other and wing it”… and that’s what we did.

Your point is very well taken. I’m sure as we get better at this, we’ll be able to clean it up as you noted.

By contrast, one thing I was thinking while listening to it...

…was that the take I had on the nature and sound of you guys on the podcast was actually positive about its “crutch” words as 071903 put it. It had close to the same feel of talking with you guys before the game at the Cal game tailgater. For that, it seemed more authentic and homey as far as sports talk goes. I think a direction you very well could roll with would be having more assertions (still of course leaving room for eachother making points), but being more aggressive and making more of an “Alright, I gotta call you out on this one” atmosphere. If this is attainable, (which it very well may not be given the teleconference circumstances), it’d be totally sweet and entertaining to listen to. All the same, you guys seemed to agree quite a bit and there should be no forced disagreements for the sake of entertainment. You don’t have to make it Pardon The Interruption. Just my $.02.

I apologize if I gave the impression

that I meant you weren’t prepared. I didn’t think that at all. In fact it seemed that you all came in with something to say and had plenty to say about it. I think that the flow of it all was rough and I already covered that with the crutch words.

Not to beat the topic to death…I think it was good, and like I said, I look forward to the next one. I don’t think anyone expects perfection the first time they do anything. What would be the fun in that???

I will second what Quinn said above. I don’t think it would be a bad idea to reduce the crutch words, but the whole thing had the feel of three (very knowledgeable) fans having a discussion about Oregon. I liked that. If that’s not what you’re going for, then you’ll have to make some adjustments, obviously, but I didn’t mind the relative unpreparedness. I’m not looking for something with more dull, blase talking heads.
