Quack Fix: Ducks look forward to USC, national media takes notice of Ducks defense
Well, it's not looking forward any more and there will be no more talk of trap games. USC and Gameday are coming to town on Halloween, which is sure to be wild.
- It's finally the game the Ducks have been waiting for. After weeks of questions, USC is finally the next game. Coach Kelly started to talk about the USC game at his weekly teleconference yesterday, and he's saying that the team will prepare as they do for every other game. Kelly says that this USC teams is the best team that the Ducks have faced this season. In injury news, Talmadge Jackson is day to day with back spasms, and Josh Kaddu (who has done an excellent job this year) will be meeting with doctors today regarding his foot injury.
- Kelly also had some comments on the penalties against Brandon Bair. Both Kelly and Azzinaro had words with the referees, and they claimed that the UW lineman was bringing hie head down as Bair brought his hands up, and Azzinaro said he highly doubted that Bair's technique was different at all. This again sounds like a case of Pac-10 refs being their normal inconsistent selves.
- Pete Carroll also had his Sunday night conference, and says that the Trojans are preparing for a crazy Autzen Stadium. USC will be looking to stop the Oregon passing game, after giving up over 600 yards over the past two weeks.
- The national media is taking notice of the Ducks defense. Stewart Mandel of SI.com covers the Ducks at length in this week's wrap up. The defensive turnaround has been the story of the Ducks season, and the defense and special teams have helped get the Ducks through a couple tough games, and have the Ducks in the top 10, something unimaginable after the BSU loss.
- In a bit more Washington news, it's always fun to listen to UW fans whine about the sixth straight shellacking. Here's a post-game podcast from Dawgman.com (warning, link is an mp3 file). I love the taste of schadenfreude.
- In Pac-10 round-up, Nick Daschel of Buster Sports grades each team's performances this week, and Oregon gets an A-. Also, Ken Goe has a story on how Arizona is becoming dangerous (let's not forget, they should be undefeated in conference right now). Also, UCLA is imploding, and a Conquest Chronicles fanposter is on the story, complete with awesome Twitter screenshots.

Just fine. We were doubted before the Cal game and look how that turned out.

I was surprised to see that. Do they really think that USC is a 7 point favorite on a neutral field?

the lines always skew towards So Cal teams. prob by almost a touchdown or whatever they feel they can get away with before the professionals take advantage of them. seriously, if they put the line a like last week’s USC/Or St game (USC was favored by 21), they’d still probably have all of So Cal taking the trojans. add that to what the home team usually gets in college fb (7 pts), i’ll take Oregon and the points…

Well, statistically, it’s been shown to be a 3 swing towards the home team, and another 3 point swing from the visiting team. For a total of a 6 point swing. This the “7 point favorite on a neutral field” comment made above. This is for college.

correct.
my pt was that in the NFL it starts around 3 and goes towards 0 cuz home fields are starting to not matter as much. and in college its more exaggerated. playing in Autzen is slightly different than let’s say Tempe or Palo Alto. Slightly.

It was either an OLive or RG story a season or two ago that quoted a Vegas bookie saying that home field is worth 3 points—except for Autzen, which was worth 4 or 5.

And the articles start pouring in...
Scott Wolf of the LA Daily News, with a lot of info from Pete Carroll’s press conference.
“Oregon’s a totally different style team. It will be a totally different game,” Carroll said Sunday night. "They are predominantly a running team.
“The quarterback’s running 10 times a game. It’s somewhat more similar to what we prepared for with Ohio State.”

Bah. Let those guys know they’re over-rated. If people, as they claim, really don’t care about the national rankings, then why does it matter if USC is over-rated? The Pac 10 title is really all that matters, right? Unless we finish first or second, our SoS is meaningless, right?
So who cares if our win against USC doesn’t look as good because they’re over-rated? It’s fun to chant!

National Rankings - who doesn't care?
So I know some people have stated that they don’t care about the national rankings and the polls (most notably, Chip Kelly, but understandable perhaps in his case). As a fan, I just don’t know that I buy another fan saying this.
How can you not care if your team has a chance to win it all or not?
Especially in college football, with no playoff system and everything is determined by perception, prejudice, history, and all sorts of varied subjective criteria?
by gamedaytribe on Oct 26, 2009 9:30 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, the polls right now are pretty meaningless. The top two matter at the end of the year, but that has a long ways to go to shake out.

Oh I absolutely care. I admitted this in a fanpost. The national rankings are interesting to me, and I’d love to see the Ducks as high as possible.
However, logic dictates that it would take a lot of things out of Oregon’s control for the Ducks to get to the NC game. And if they can’t get to the NC game, logic also dictates that the rankings don’t matter. Most people on this site have said that they don’t really care about the rankings and just want a Pac 10 title. I completely understand that point of view.
But if that’s really your point of view, then why would it matter if USC is over-rated? As long as Oregon beats them, who cares if it hurts their SoS?
My other point has always been: It’s a freakin chant at a football game. It’s meant as a big “Eff you” to the opposing team and their fans. No one is thinking about any further ramifications of the statement, and I don’t think they should.

The reason that I don’t care for the first time is that too much crazy stuff would have to happen for the Ducks to get into the top 2. Like Jared said, the top 2 are the only 2 spots the really, truly mean anything. The Ducks could be #15 and USC could be #4, but if the Ducks win the Pac 10 we go to the Rose Bowl over USC. I’ll start caring more if craziness starts to happen, but right now it’s just too early to start thinking, “okay…If Texas loses to a bad team, then Fla and Ala both lose twice, then LSU loses again, then Cinci, TCU, and Boise State all lose, we might get into the top 2”.

Let’s play what has to happen in the BCS for the Ducks to make it!?!
I already think that a single SEC team will make it to the title game. So after that….
Texas needs to lose. The Big 12 is garbage this year. I don’t think Texas make the title game if they have one loss and are against a one-loss Pac-10 team.
Cinci and Iowa need to lose. Niether has looked impressive, but coming from BCS conferences and Cinci having some good OOC games will put them next in the pecking order.
And…that’s it. I think that Oregon will jump TCU and BSU, granted IF WE WIN. Oregon is already up on both in the computers, and that will only become more dominant as Oregon plays USC, Stanford, Arizona, and Oregon State. On top of that, I think our resume will cause a good number of voters to bump us over BSU, especially if our resume continues to look good.
Now, of course, there’s a WHOLE lot of football to be played. We have the toughest part of our schedule left, and have to go on the road twice against better pac-10 teams. Whatever happens, it’ll be a lot of fun.

Which would put OSU in the top seat for the Rose Bowl should they win out.

It’s actually not that far-fetched. Assuming Iowa loses to tOSU and Cinci drops one to either WVU or Pitt, it will still be close between Oregon and TCU, IMO. TCU still has a chance to beat a ranked Utah.
In the end, though, it’s Texas not losing that will probably keep us out. If they don’t lose to OkSt this weekend, I don’t think anyone else is getting close.

Why early polls matter
I’m with all of ya, basically…
BUT…
One thing that’s struck me really forcibly this year, more than most, is how difficult it is to jump later in the year. It’s much easier for a team that starts off high to squeeze into the top 2.
As exhibit A, take John Hunt’s strange AP poll rationalization:“Unfortunately for Oregon, the teams atop the Ducks didn’t slip up.” That after a horrendous set of games where teams above them, whlie not losing, barely beat mediocre oppposition with no offense to speak of, whereas Oregon crushed Washington. There is no excuse for Hunt to rank the Ducks so low – he’s a West Coast journalist who presumably has at least seen all the games.
The rankings influence everybody else who’s voting – a team that’s been up high in the polls most of the season gets away with a lot more weakness; it’s harder for a team that hasn’t seen respect to earn it – you have to pull miracles and it’s not often the schedule allows it.
One third of the BCS Ranking is the Coaches poll – and if you take a look at the voters – the vast majority are on the East Coast, and don’t even get West Coast games other than USC (I counted 14 out of 59 voters).
Even if Oregon were to win out, the only way they would get to #2 is if the Coaches poll significantly shifted. And looking at their current voter list and the way they have voted so far, it’s not likely.
by gamedaytribe on Oct 26, 2009 1:29 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yup.
And based on this, and the likely jump we’d get if we win next week, I bet you’ll see a huge change up in the “I don’t care” after next week if we pull it off.
Lose next week and yes, it’s right back to not caring much and just trying to win the Pac-10.
It has been a convenient few weeks not to care.

Like I said, are you going to cheer their good plays so that it makes our win look even better? No, you won’t, and you shouldn’t. We’ll come on ATQ after the game and say, boy, that Barkley throw to Johnson was amazing. Good thing it didn’t hurt us. I dunno… I haven’t cheered the other team, but I’ve been impressed with dismay while at the game (Or at home). Sometimes a team can do everything right on a play, and the other team still can execute. I give props where props are due.
Autzen should be a hostile environment, only because it’s difficult to play in. I would argue chanting “overrated” doesn’t make it any more difficult or hostile. I guess if people have fun doing it – good for them. But it’s still pretty freaking stupid. Why didn’t we chant that against WSU? UDub? Why only against the teams that don’t actually suck?
It's spelled "S-H-U-F-E-L-T-H-I-M-S-E-L-F"

I remember chanting that against UW in 2000 when we beat them. The entire stadium was into it and it was beautiful. UW came in ranked 10th, I believe, and we beat em soundly. Not a blowout, just a good solid win.
That was my freshman year and me being a SoCal kid, I had no idea about the rivalry between the Ducks and Huskies. The over-rated chant made me fully aware. It just seemed so appropriate in that context. So I have a bit of a soft spot in my heart for that chant.
Also, in response to your questions – we don’t chant that against sucky teams because they’re NOT over-rated. They’re rated as sucky, which is correct. It’s not like WSU strolled in there with the confidence and swagger of a top 20 team. They came in, worked hard, and got beat because they’re bad. Chanting over-rated would be stupid in that situation, I agree.

Exactly. See – if Notre Dame came in to Autzen, it would almost be a given to chant “over rated” regardless of the score, or even who was winning.
But if Oregon beats a good solid team – that doesn’t mean the other team was over rated. It just means, on that day, Oregon was better.

Of course! It’s just a chant. No one cares if it’s true. They just care if it demoralizes the other team! Let me rephrase that – they just care if it SOUNDS like it demoralizes the other team (I seriously doubt most players are actually paying any attention to what the crowd is saying).
It’s one of the few chants that 50,000+ people can quickly pick up and shout in unison. It sounds intimidating. And it’s better than just shouting “F*** You!” over and over.
It meets my basic chant criteria:
1. Easy to say
2. Rhythmic
3. Insulting to the other team OR uplifting to our team
4. Popular
5. Not inappropriate or vulgar (borderline stuff like “Huck the Fuskies” is acceptable)

I never said anything about cheering for anyone. Why does it have to be such extreme ends of the spectrum? There are a ton of other things that can be chanted. Just because I say that one chant isn’t great doesn’t mean I’m saying to cheer for the other team. That just seems a little extreme to me. No worries. I just think it’s people having fun. I don’t think you’re being unreasonable or harsh here and I’m sure you won’t start punching people at the game if they start chanting “over-rated.”
Maybe you can start an “under-rated” chant for us when we have the ball. =)

I didn’t accuse you of judging others harshly, I’m asking you not to. We had this discussion in a thread earlier in the year (probably after the Cal game), and people came down on it fairly harshly, calling people out for it. I’m not insinuating that was you – just imploring you to avoid that.

It isn’t even an issue of “projecting a meaning”. It’s what it sounds like – and I’m not the only one that thinks this. I don’t care enough to stop people from chanting it. I’ll just continue saying it’s a dumb chant – because I think it’s a dumb chant.

Wow. Quite a discussion.
When it’s students at the end of the game chanting overrated as the clock winds down, I’m not real impressed, but not offended either. Hey, I was a college student once too. When it’s 40 dudes gathering on the field 15 minutes after the game and standing in front of the contingent of otherwise polite Utah fans, then that group is just adding fuel to the “classless Oregon fans” fire. That was bullshit and I hope I never see it happen again.
I prefer a good dose of “It’s all over”. Same cadence, same simplicity, same good fun, and frankly, I think it rubs a bit more salt in the wound while lacking the basic premise of “you guys are so bad you lost to our sorry asses.”

There are times and places for every chant. Over-rated is great during the second half, up by a couple scores, and the defense just got a turnover or something. Anything that’s meant to provoke individual fans is probably not a good idea.
For the end of games, I prefer the good ol’ “Nananana, nananana, hey hey hey, gooooodbye.”

Phil Steele continues to go hungry in favor of eating the roast crow that has been so thoroughly prepared for him. The opening line for his blurb about the UO-UW game:
Washington was in control of the UO game early.
He goes on to treat the blocked punt as if it were more luck than anything else. It seems to be a struggle for him to say anything positive about Oregon at all. What’s the over/under on when this guy admits he was wrong about the Ducks?

Like I said, he replied to me via e-mail before the UCLA game and said that if we beat UCLA on the road that we’ll no longer “be on the outside looking in” to his top FIFTY. Well, we won that game with our backup QB when he picked against us, then we beat uw when he picked against us. At this point I think he’s like a blackjack player that just keeps doubling his bets each time he loses thinking “one of these times I’m bound to win and get back to even.”

UW's early control of the game...
1) Masoli was rusty
2) home field advantage
3) we passed a lot to soften up the middle of our defense – went away from our strengths – but all to our advantage later in the game.
We thoroughly dominated the 3rd quarter. UW scored their points after we took a 36-6 lead. I just don’t get while Phil is being so stubborn.

Gildon looked a little soft on his coverage
but I will agree, Harris looked sharp. TJ3 is definitely an asset. He has that lock down ability like WT3. Harris will get there once he learns the coverages, schemes, and tendencies of the opposing team a little more.
Like the INT-TD TJ3 had against UCLA, that was a “I’ve seen this play before, I know I have help over the top… I’m jumping this route for six” kind of play.

Pac 10 the best conference
Nice to see the Pac 10 getting some love. The computers sure love the conference. Arizona and Cal are both way up there in the comp rankings compared to human polls. It makes sense for Cal. Their actual W-L is good, and they have a quality SoS, but the human polls are still punishing them (somewhat justifiably) for getting pounded by both USC and Oregon.

It was a spirited workout with a new soundtrack of hip-hop tunes, and the energy level felt very high. Chip Kelly and a couple of his players said it might have been Oregon’s best Monday practice of the season.
Is this the hardest working team we’ve had at Oregon? They work hard every week, and LMJ said, “On Wednesday I knew we’ve win, because we’re the hardest working team in the nation.”
In other news, Tyrece Gaines was named scout team player of the week, which is good news after a bit of rumor that he was unhappy. But if he or other players want to play, they’re gonna hafta work their tails off.

I like Doc Saturday...
From Holly Anderson’s Mid Major Monday report….
Speaking of Oregon: The Ducks are turning out to be the linchpin of more than one mid-major season. With an upset of USC next weekend, they could leapfrog the same Boise State team that waxed them on national television in the season opener. Bronco partisans and head-to-head purists will howl, but the schedule’s the schedule, and there’s absolutely no one remaining on Boise State’s slate that will allow it to make a case for late-season inclusion in the top ten. (Plus, we’re still convinced they’re going to lose to Idaho in three weeks. I look forward to your e-mails, Boise fans.)

USC bias...
You tell me…
Running back A: 15 carries for 147 yards and 2 TD’s at home in a win against an unranked team
Running back B: 15 carries for 154 yards and 2 TD’s on the road in a win against a team that beat Running back A’s team.

The defense Bradford was gashing is a lot better than the one LMJ was eating up. Plus Bradford gets extra points for doing it in a closer game. I don’t think this one was off-base. Certainly a case could be made for LMJ, but Bradford was dang good.

he's a second string LB
most of the time he will play Rowe’s spot when either Rowe is out or when Rowe moves down to the D-line and d-lineman subs out. He really adds a lot to the versatility of the defense and is quietly having a great year… I think he will be missed a lot
I think in the USC game, you will see less of the subs and Rowe will be on the field a lot more. I really look for Aliotti to stack the box and force USC to beat them one on one at the corners. If we can make USC one dimensional and pass only, it greatly increases our chance of stopping them and getting to Barkley. That and juju will be swarming him too.
