Fact or Fiction: will weather affect the Oregon-USC game?
To borrow a topic idea from dvieira's posts...
FACT OR FICTION:
The weather in Eugene will affect the outcome of the USC-Oregon game on Saturday.
The weather report for Saturday (I realize that this is Fall weather in Oregon and that it could change 20 times by then...) calls for showers and a high of 58. Light winds around 10mph out of the WSW.
Just in case you need statistical facts on Jeremiah Masoli, I lead you here to Paul SF's article last month.
A list of thoughts that I had while contemplating this topic:
- Will SoCal boy, Matt Barkley be able to throw in cool, wet weather?
- Does this weather mean more of a running attack for both teams, and if so, who is more likely to succeed running the ball?
- Does Chip Kelly not care about rain and ask Masoli to throw the ball to start the game as he has in the past few games?
- Will wet weather affect coaches' decisions to go-for-it on 4th downs, rather than kick FGs in certain situations?
What are your thoughts? Vote FACT or FICTION and give your reasons in the comments.

But I thought it never rained in Autzen?
To go out and ruin somebody's dreams like that, it feels real good," Oregon receiver Jaison Williams.
While I do believe it is a fact the weather will effect the outcome
I do think that both teams are built to play in good and bad weather. Both team are built around fast strong defenses. Both teams are run dominant. Both teams use short passing games to set up the run.
I think the one area that Oregon has an advantage when it comes to the weather, is that Oregon uses a lot of misdirection, screen and counter plays where if you aren’t ready defensively and have to make quick cuts to get back into position, the weather could adversely effect. Plus, Oregon is used to playing on a wet Brooks field, USC isn’t.
I agree with you, but voted fiction, because I think it’ll all be a wash in the end.

I think it will effect the outcome though
I think there will be turnovers, drops and missed tackles due to the weather. I only think Oregon is better built to play in all weather situations. I personally disagree with Paul’s assertion that weather effects Masoli performance.
I think it will affect his performance a little bit, but it certainly can’t help our newest crop of receivers to contract the drops (not that it’s as bad as in years past, but you can’t deny that there have been a decent number of dropped passes – I’m looking at you Jamere Holland).
Anyway, I think it will have an affect on the outcome of the game, in that it will decrease scoring. I think it may ultimately help the Ducks, but not by a lot.

I think DJ Davis is quickly becoming the new favorite target of Masoli and the offense. Maehl is still dependable and runs great underneath routes.
The biggest X factor is going to be Dickson. OSU torched USC with the TE and at times it looked like USC was so focused on the backfield and Quizz that the LBs totally lost track of the TE running past them. If Dickson gets that same type of treatment (a la Cal and it’s LBs, and USC v OSU) he is going to have a HUGE game, rain or shine.
It would be kind of awesome to have a downpour
But I hope it doesn’t happen. We want conditions that favor an offensive game. Our easiest route to victory is to simply outscore USC (the defense is good but I don’t want to let Barkley have a chance at being da man late).

Carroll is undefeated in November isn’t he? I’d be willing to wager a few of those games were in the rain.
Its not November thankfully
Still October.

I Hope
the weather doesn’t quiet down the fan noise. I want it to be as intimidating as possible.
All Ducks, all the time.
It won't
In 2005, I attended the Cal game, which was held in an absolute monsoon. The crowd remained really loud the entire game.

True that...
I was at that game and during OT that was the loudest game I had ever attended until Cal this year. Thats also when I found out my water-proof jacket is only water proof for 4 hours…

I assure you most here in SoCal cannot...
Down here in SoCal, when there is intermittent drizzle…It recieves STORM OF THE CENTURY type media coverage. Absolutely ridiculous

I can attest to that.
I have been working down here in SoCal since April and it has only rained a handful of times. If USC plays football in the rain anything like the people here drive in rain…its gonna be ugly! When it rains here people lose their minds when if comes to driving!
May we hand you your taints on a silver platter...
I was honestly thinking of saying something along the lines of...
If you see a Southern Californian driving in the rain, get the hell away!
Awww man, if it rains down here people drive insane!

Hey, not all of us Southern Californians are complete morons when it comes to driving in the rain. Let’s be careful with the generalizations here.
No, it doesn’t rain much down here, but how often do those guys play in the rain up in Eugene? I think it rained lightly during one of the games (although I could be wrong) and Kelly has them practice most of the time indoors. I don’t think experience in the rain is going to be a huge plus for the Ducks. Maybe a tiny one, but too small to have any significant impact.

The Ducks practiced today in the rain and cold, and Kelly said they looked good. That makes me happy.

That did make me happy, as well. I’m always glad when Kelly gives the team props, because it doesn’t seem like he’s one to give praise when it’s not due.

Wow, seriously.
They must have practiced AMAZING for him to give out a compliment like that

I have lived in SoCal all 17 years of my life...
Of course not all of us suck in the rain, but it is very scary to see some people drive down here when it rains.
I hope that wet weather would help us, and hurt them….It would at the very least make sense
