Tako Tuesdays: Hollywood Bars
Note: Tako Tuesdays is posting a few hours early today because I'm too poor to afford Internet and I don't want to get up early tomorrow morning and walk to campus.
As much fun as Taylor's, Rennie's, the Cooler, or the Jackalope are, your favorite bar isn't in Eugene. It probably isn't in your hometown. It's on the television, or in the movies. The women are beautiful, it's never too crowded, and you always get your favorite table. For your reading and debating pleasure, I give you a Top 10 list of the best gin joints of the big and little screens.
10. The Titty Twister (From Dusk Till Dawn) - Nothing better than Selma Hayak wearing next to nothing. Oh, and Mexican vampires. Yeeeeah Mexican vampires.
9. MacLaren's (How I Met Your Mother) - This isn't a bar for merely sitting around and having a beer. MacLaren's is for drinking. Whether it's five shots of Red Dragon or Thankstinis and Kwaanzapolitans during the holidays, bring your A game.
8. The Gold Room at the Overlook Hotel (The Shining) - Sure, the place is haunted. But before you go completely insane and start trying to kill your loved ones, you can have a good time partying with some ghosts. And I don't know about you, but I ain't afraid of no ghosts.

7. Lou's Tavern (Fight Club) - Tom Waits on the jukebox, fight club in the basement. Sounds like one hell of a Yom Kippur.
via www.starwars.com
6. The Cantina (Star Wars) - Sure, the drinks are milky and blue. But it's got the best live music on Tatooine, and you get to meet some really interesting people.
5. The Double Deuce (Road House) - Exactly as dangerous as the Cantina, except switch lasers for Patrick Swayze. They're exactly the same amount of dangerous.
4. The Winchester (Shawn of the Dead) - Take Car. Go to Mum's. Kill Phil. Get Liz. Go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over. How's that for a slice of fried gold?
3. Rick's Cafe Americain (Casablanca) - The granddaddy of them all, the best dive in all of Morocco. Just be careful, your ex-girlfriend might walk in at any moment.
2. Moe's Tavern (The Simpsons) - You will not find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. Or, just a bunch of drunk, out of shape, funny colored people. Carl and Lenny may be the best two guys to have around at your bar, except...
1. Cheers (Cheers) - NORM!!! Sam and Coach behind the bar (Woody was overrated, IMO), Cliff and Frasier providing one good joke each an episode, and Norm being the greatest alcoholic of all time. Can't be beat. There were social issues, romance, and a lot of beer.
Did I miss any? Let me know in the comments. Other comment-starters: I'm more scared of Nick Foles than I am of Sean Canfield, I'm afraid of dolphins, Quinn is overrated as a person. Go.

Tomorrow (today?) Fight Club is released on Blue Ray to celebrate it’s 10th anniversary. If I had a Blue Ray, that’d be a lot cooler.

Wow, the CGI opening scene on BluRay is giving me shivers just thinking about...

No. Evidently I'm a loser too.

I think we need at least one speakeasy on the list.
Now… what movies featured speakeasies?

A River Runs Through It
Great movie
Kenny Wheaton #20; The Pick - 1994 v UW. Matthew Harper #20; The Pick #2 - 2007 v USC. John Boyett #20;...
That is a great movie.
We should have an ATQ Brad Pittophile watch party.

The Thin Man
Old movie, but there were a couple of speakeasies in that one as I recall.
It’s sad that Mad Men doesn’t have a normal bar. Cause that would make the list easy.

I might as well have just put the office on the list. They drink enough there as it is.

Honorable mention,
The bar from Inglorious Basterds. The WW2 Nazis are what provide the distinctive personality of this European classic.

All good choices
And Shawn of the Dead? Best. Zombie. Movie. Ever. Good call on the Winchester.

There were 2 I was hoping for, but I’m on my phone so can’t look up the names:
1. The club they go to several times in Scarface.
2. The clubhouse/bar on Sons of Anarchy.
FINISH

So tonight, for Tako Tuesday, I’m going to break away from the Oregon brews, and return the favor to the Chicago guys.
I’ll be busting out the brandy sniffers and drinking a 2009 Bourbon County Stout from Goose Island.
If you hate thick beer, you’ll loath this one. It might be all I have for dinner.

Speaking of beer, the opening gala of the conference I am currently attending in Portland was last night. As part of my registration, I got two free drinks. They had Black Butte Porter and Bridgeport IPA on tap. As a point of reference, last year the conference was in Austin and the best beer selections were Heineken and Shiner Bock.
Double Mountain here in Hood River
recently brewed a Brown Ale that they aged for a few months in bourbon barrels, and oh, dear lord. That is the kind of beer that will ruin your life.

Just curious
What percentage of ATQ threads do not mention beer eventually?
by HoodRiverDuck on Nov 17, 2009 2:47 PM PST up reply actions
Not nearly enough. According to Takimoto’s recent fanshot, beer was mentioned in 29 Stories, 24 FanPosts, 1 FanShot, 324 comments. The total postings for each are: 1,135 Stories, 899 FanPosts, 447 FanShots, and at least 63,900 comments.
If you’re in Portland, you’re likely within 10 blocks of some microbrewery that doesn’t distribute.
Without a doubt, you’ve been to a McMenamin’s since you’ve been back, right?

I have. I am right by the Hawthorne and Morrison bridges, if you have any suggestions for places I have to check out before leaving.
Things that are nearby there:
Roots Brewing Co. I’ve never been a big fan of their stuff – Except their seasonal beers, which are pretty phenomenal. If you like bitter beers, they have one that is called Epic Ale. It has a great bite. Tread carefully, as it will get you shit faced. I believe it has 14% ABV.
Lucky Labrador Brew Pub is pretty good stuff. But, still not the best Portland has to offer. It’s all decent quality. Nothing I’ve had from there has been bad. But nothing has been outstanding.

Off to Roots. I noticed this on their webpage: $2.50 Tuesdays: 3:00 p.m. – 11 p.m.($2.50 20 oz. pints, all day!)
Just as an update, my buddy and I went to Roots on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, their Epic Ale wasn’t available until December. I tried their IPA first, which was just ok. After that, one of their new beers was a chocolate habanero stout, which I was really excited to try because making a chili beer is on my short list of beers I want to try and make. However, it was a major disappointment (as much as a $2.50 pint can be a disappointment, that is). After that, we moved on to bar close by where my friend’s cousin bartends.
Anyways, thanks for the suggestions. I should have been asking earlier.
I love the Lucky Lab
They keep it simple, but it’s all good shit. Black Lab Stout – yes please.
Food’s good too, Spicy Peanut Curry or Italian Grinder sandwich were my staples.
My dogs loved it as well, apparently beer makes for friends of two and four legs.
This string is killing me. Miss home, miss beer. Sniff, hiccup.

Bridgeport Brewing is on Hawthorne a little further east, as well, or used to be anyway.

Austin is actually a great beer town
A more corporate conference may have stuck you with the commercially ubiquitous Heineken and Shiner (albeit a great alternative to other cheap beers), but there’s some great craft breweries here.
You may be able to tell I drink a lot of beer, but some local / near local favorites in many varieties:
(512) Brewing – (512) Pecan Porter, (512) Bruin, (512) Wit
Independence Brewing – Bootlegger Brown, Austin Amber, Freestyle, Jasperilla
Real Brewing – Fireman’s 4, Shade Grown Coffee Porter, Brewhouse Brown
Live Oak – Big Bark Amber and a Hefeweisen
Your point of reference most definitely stands, though. Great balls of fire, there is no comparison to Portland, Oregon.
More beer please.

Not a microbrewery
but Horse Brass Pub has dozens of taps from non-distributing breweries.
And Belmont Station always has something interesting on tap at their Biercafe.
It’s a good thing I live an hour away, because I would have long since been an alcoholic if I lived near Belmont.
Let's not forget
Moe’s is based on Max’s in Eugene…
Speaking of Beer...
I am visiting family in Wisconsin right now. So hard not to just get Oregon beers when we go out, but I am manning up and trying some of the local flavor. But it is comforting to know that OR brews are repping this far east.
Go Pac, beat the Ninners
Can I get a Gooo Ducks?!
