Quack Fix: Poll roundup, the conditioned ducks, and end of the Trojan empire?
I don't know about you, but I'm still smiling. What a spectacular weekend.
- Ok, we're nearing the time of the year where I will actually start looking at the polls. Oregon is the top one-loss team in the nation and that's really all that we can say at this point. In the Pac-10, the dismantling of USC made clear the best team.
- Rob Moseley's story today is on the conditioning of this Oregon team. The Ducks wore down the Trojans physically (see Bair video after the jump). The changes that Kelly has brought to practice have helped turn the Ducks into one of the quickest and best conditioned in the nation. And honestly, their ability to run teams into the ground in the 3rd quarter reminds of of the USC teams in the 2002-2005 years.
- The OC Register talks as if this game was the end of the Trojan Empire, and Matt Hinton backs that up with some pretty astounding numbers. The Ducks had a chance to do something amazing, and they surpassed my wildest hopes. Now, I'm not willing to say that this is the end for USC. They are still ridiculously talented, but the rest of the Pac-10 (led by Oregon) is rising. USC has more competition in recruiting, and the level of the coaching in the Pac-10 is rising as well. It'll be interesting to see how Pete Carroll and the USC players, who were utterly flabbergasted by the loss, bounce back from their first blowout.
- As always, Ken Woody's breakdown is worth the read. Of note, Oregon's defense held USC to 4/14 on 3rd down conversions.
- The Wall Street Journal questions whether this win will actually hurt the Pac-10, and leave USC, or another Pac-10 team, out of a BCS Bowl. Arizona's loss to Washington really hurts the conference. If Arizona had not dropped that game, they could have gone 10-2, and would have had a decent shot at a BCS at-large bid.
- LeGarrette Blount has no timetable for reinstatement. Kelly, the University, and the Pac-10 are now talking about it, however. I assume we'll have some more info this week.
As always, leave your links and any more comments of celebration below. There are a few videos after the jump as well. GO DUCKS!

WOW.
The stat of USC losses since 2005 is RIDICULOUS.
They had only lost 7 Games by -26 Points and we drop -27 on them?
That’s amazing.

Just unreal...
When you read Mosely’s piece about conditioning the quotes from Jackson and Ward are just awesome. This is after their biggest win of the year, knocking off the team everyone wants to knock off, and all they can talk about is getting better for next week. I’ve never seen a Duck team this focused. Chip Kelly is the reason why.

Now anyone who wonders why our team looked raw
In the early games need not wonder why. Fall camp was focused almost entirely on conditioning, which has pain off hugely.

Yup
No one is fooling themselves by thinking our D-line was better than USC’s O-line…but you can’t deny the fact that they got outworked. I just loved seeing that, and I’ve always thought since the Utah game that as long as we’re close at the half, I just don’t see this team losing focus at the half — and they’re freaks of nature: they don’t get tired. I love it. I don’t think Carroll and his staff could understand how our undersized D punished them like that in the second half.

I think that our dline is not getting credit though...
for their talent. Kenny Rowe and W. Tukuafu are as talented a DE tandem as you will find. Bair is just an unique physical speciman…at 270 pounds and little body fat he is a problem (obviously don’t put him in the middle on the 3-3-5). I don’t remember this much depth ever. Turner, Toeaina, Clark and now Irvin and T. Monty seem to provide little drop off.

I don’t like the WSJ’s logic here. They make it sound as though there are Pac-10 teams, and then there’s USC. If we had lost that game (seems a laughable notion in hindsight), we would not have received an at-large bid most likely, so it’s tragic that USC won’t but alright if we wouldn’t? I think the better story to take out of this weekend is that the Pac-10 is clearly deeper than anyone wants to give us credit for.

Its the eastern media
And not only the eastern media but an outlet that doesn’t exactly cover sports.
I agree though, Saturday should put to rest the notion that the Pac-10 is really the Pac-1 (USC).

This is what I love about Chip
He doesn’t care about that stuff. Yes, as fans we have every right to look at the polls, or wonder if there’s indeed an East Coast bias…but really I am just relieved that Bellotti built the foundation (and did all the politicking in the media to get noticed) so that Kelly doesn’t have to feel uncomfortable doing it. Again, I love what Bellotti did for this school, but he was a little too concerned at times with what others thought of the program…I think it was necessary to a degree in getting noticed, but Kelly is just such a breath of fresh air. It’s scary how focused this team is, and really, this year more than any other, I don’t care about an East Coast bias. If Oregon takes care of business we’ll start the year next year in the top 5. Just win the day, baby!

we have to remember too
that we more or less have a 2 game buffer zone between us and everyone in the pac 9 (i no longer count WSU). although arizona still has 1 conference loss, they have to go to USC, and i dont think usc will drop that game in any way shape or form.

The thing about Arizona
that scares me the most is how they do these quick one or two step drops with their QB and then rely on their WR’s speed to beat you…now, that kind of plays into our strength with our speedy D, but if Arizona is playing well and are close in that game, then the fans become a factor — and that’s a tough place to play when the fans actually care. However, I’ve watched about three ‘Zona games this year and whatever mojo they have with their offense (they usually strike quickly) they often can’t sustain. I’ve seen them go up 21-0 and then in the third qtr. it’ll be 21-10…so I think Oregon will be okay, as long as it’s close by the second half, because we all know what this team does in the 3rd qtr…we’re pretty much unstoppable.
Plus, for whatever reasons, Bellotti was horrible against Stoops. I think Chip will fare much better at preparing his team to go down to Tuscon. But yes…Arizona has been the one team that has scared me the most (other than USC)…I don’t worry about Stanford too much.

PANIC!!
There are four teams left on our schedule who are very capable of beating Oregon if we don’t show up mentally focused and ready to play. Based on what we’ve seen so far this year, I have a lot of confidence in this team.
OTOH, for JuJu’s sake, stop talking about a shot at the NC until after the Civil War. At that point, we can look up and see what the B©S system spits out as a matchup for us.

A bit more on Tony Washington, last nights recruit, from Greg Biggins:
“They’re all about putting pressure on the quarterback,” Washington said. "They bring the heat and I love to rush the passer. I’ll be coming in as a standup defensive end meaning sometimes I’ll rush the passer and other times I’ll drop back in to coverage. It’s almost like a hybrid type position, but they like my size and athleticism to do it and I think it fits in well with what I’m good at.
Oregon has done an amazing job at recruiting talented kids that can play a lot of positions. Washington sounds like he’ll play like Kenny Rowe, and will fit well with Isaac Dixon and Chris McCain. Recruiting for the secondary is going very well. If we pick up a couple of out big D-line targets, this will be one of our best defensive recruiting years ever.

I read that last night, too...
and it seems that this is now a point of emphasis with Kelly and the defensive coaches. I wasn’t sure if Aliotti was going to stick with this scheme in the long run, but this is an encouraging sign that they continue to go after kids who fit that hybrid, Elvis Dumervil/Demarcus Ware type role. I think this kid will fit in nicely with Aliotti’s new scheme.

A lot of people said that we were too harsh on LGB
But i would rather be to harsh than throw out a joke suspension like Florida did with Brandon Spikes. If you have not seen the eye gouge give this a look. Urban Meyer suspended Spikes for a half, like two quarters, terrible. And when you factor in how their D struggled without him, because of injury, this becomes fishy in my mind. The point being, I think Chip handled Blount’s situation so well. It is paying dividends with this program and will do so into the future. Chip continues to prove he is one of the best young coaches in the country.
The Ducks' 27-point margin was one more than the margins of all seven of USC's losses since 2004 combined.

Difference between ESPN's take of this an our handling of the LGB incident
Is quite instructive. Every single ESPN host is absolutely tearing apart Florida for its weak punishment while we got credit both for the punishment and for not kicking him out of school. A net win for Oregon, a net loss for Florida.

Lets Safeguard QB Masoli
Ducks were excellent against USC. Very glad to see the center snapping the ball to QB’s beltbuckle, not over his head. That is big improvement.
Those with even as short a memory as 2007 will realize we are riding on the success and knees of an outstanding QB. I suggest that whenever the Ducks get a two TD lead that it is time for Nate Costa to come in.

You have to be most scared of @Arizona...
they win out until we play them and it’s one of the biggest matchups to come to Tuscon in many years. They probably have the best environment due to recent success outside of Eugene (I know husky stadium is better but there has been little to cheer for in recent years). If they go on the road and take care of Cal, they are top 15 easily. Throw in the fact that it appears to be the only game on the slate between top 25, if not top 15…can you say “GAME DAY.”
They are the most balanced of the teams left. Stanford is okay on defense. Arizona is good on both sides.

I'm not sure I follow the WSJ's logic here
Assuming Oregon does win the Pac 10, why would the BCS bowl people NOT choose USC as an at-large? USC would still bring huge crowds to any BCS bowl as well as creating a lot of hype for the bowl in question.
The bowls are not forced to pick both TCU and Boise State if both finish in the top whatever in the BCS standings, only one, so what 2nd place team would a BCS bowl rather have than USC? It’s not going to be #2 in the Big East, ACC, or Big 12. Maybe Penn State, probably they’d take the Alabama / Florida loser. So for ten spots we presumably have:
NC: Texas vs. Florida
Rose: Oregon vs. Iowa
Orange: Georgia Tech vs. ?
Fiesta: Boise State or TCU vs. ?
Sugar: Alabama vs. ???
You’ve got to have Cincinnati in there somewhere, but that still leaves two spots, probably to Big 10 #2 and to USC. The only problem I foresee (and WSJ points out) is if Notre Dame somehow sneaks into the BCS. I’d be really surprised if ND gets into the top 8 (automatic bid), so would they really get a bid over USC, who beat them in North Bend? Would they really give Boise State a bid over USC? I’m not seeing it.
by johnnycougar on Nov 2, 2009 4:07 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Good post, but I do think that if ND wins out, they’re in, no matter what USC does (provided they make it into the top 14, which shouldn’t be a problem with a 10 – 2 record). ND’s fanbase travels somewhat better, plus I’d think a BCS bowl would love to have a “resurgent” ND team over a possible unmotivated USC team.
An 11 – 1 Penn St. or 10 -2 USC? That’s a tough call, but I think Penn St. gets the nod there too, just because of the East Coast prestige.
I do think that an undefeated BSU or TCU is going to get left out. Bowls would be silly to take one of those teams over an established quality BCS school (especially BSU, which can’t sell out its home games as it is). But I do think USC is on the outside looking in unless Penn St. or ND loses again.
What about this, though – what if tOSU wins out, and takes the Big 10 auto bid. Does an 11 – 1 Iowa get left out for a 10 – 2 USC? I think they do, which is pretty crappy for Iowa. They don’t travel as well as USC, and have looked pretty lackluster in a lot of their wins. Plus their loss will have come at the end of the season, never a good thing in terms of perception (unless you’re a computer in the 2001 BCS rankings and you ignore a blowout loss to end the season. Effing Nebraska).
Anyway, I think the Pac 10 has a decent shot, but I don’t think USC controls its own destiny to get an at large berth.

I wonder if there’s some risk of USC’s fans not traveling as well as they have recently, even to a BCS bowl. Economy + letdown from lofty expectations = USC a risky selection as opposed to a TCU or BSU fan base energized by a rare BCS opportunity?
By the grace of Juju, we all are day-to-day.
by JConant on Nov 2, 2009 7:13 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree that there might be a letdown from USC’s fanbase, but IMO, they’re still a much safer bet than a BSU fanbase that can’t sell out its own venue. Now, if BSU gets the auto bid, undefeated TCU vs. 10 – 2 USC will be pretty close to a toss up. I would imagine those fans would travel pretty well.

It’s hard to imagine any base not traveling well to a BCS game. But I gather from comments by SC fans, they’re feelings get hurt if they aren’t in the NC game.

The Fiesta would positively drool over the prospect of picking USC.
Norte Dame won’t win out. Pittsburgh and Stanford will both beat ’em.
by ursula on Nov 2, 2009 8:38 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
Fiesta would love USC, definitely more than Boise, and I also have doubts about ND winning out.
by johnnycougar on Nov 3, 2009 3:48 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Interesting
But I can’t see any scenario in which Boise State and TCU are both undefeated yet Boise is ranked higher. They’re close now, but TCU is two spots higher in the computers and Boise is likely to continue dropping with their weak-ass schedule. With every opponent Oregon destroys, I think the “humans” put more mental distance between the current Oregon team and the one that lost at Boise, and so I doubt Boise will jump TCU by enough in the polls to overcome the computers.
by johnnycougar on Nov 3, 2009 3:53 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
The key is "controls its own destiny"
And there I agree with you. 11-1 Penn State probably jumps USC, while 11-1 Iowa does not. This is sort of a side issue, but I don’t get why the Big 10 always gets the benefit of the doubt. Every year there are media members who play up how awesome the Big 10 is and every year the Big 10 gets creamed in the big games (or at least it seems that way). On a neutral field, how much would Vegas favor a 10-2 USC over either of those Big 10 schools? I live in New Mexico so I unfortunately get a lot of Big 10 games on regional ABC or ESPN coverage, and I’ve probably watch about five Iowa games. They just don’t impress me. Penn State likewise. I guess more than anything the BCS bowl selections are about selling tickets.
Even if ND wins out, I’m not sure how high they’ll climb. They have to be in the top 14 to be eligible for an at-large and they’re at 22 right now. They would have to jump Cal, Arizona, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Miami, Oklahoma State, Houston, and Utah. Unless they absolutely dominate every team on their schedule I’m not sure how far they’ll rise in the polls.
by johnnycougar on Nov 3, 2009 4:03 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That's the key:
“I guess more than anything the BCS bowl selections are about selling tickets.”
And even more than that, getting good TV ratings. There are TONS of people who will watch Penn St. or tOSU even though they’re going to get walloped. The bowl could care less about a competitive matchup as long as they get the eyeballs for the first half.

The main reason that Williams is not more highly touted than he is...
Is because his junior year was slowed down by injury. Simply stated: When he plays, he is a very dangerous runner (not to mention in the highlights I have seen from him; his o-line it woeful-and he still produces!). Like Rivals said; his frame can accumulate some more muscle, maybe a 5’11 210-215 pound back.
My 2 cents

After re-reading it I see what your saying.
A lot of one sentance paragraphs and fragmented ideas. Probably as a result of editing down a lot of information.
At any rate he raises some good points. The Ducks are now THE team in the conference. Everyone will be gunning for them. But if there was one take away from Washington State week, neither the coaches nor the players are going to rest on what happened in the last game. And you have to like that.

No start time for Oregon-ASU until next Sunday
So says Rob:
The Pac-10 has opted to fall back on a rare six-day window for finalizing kickoff time and television information for two games Nov. 14, including Oregon’s home game against Arizona State.
Oregon announced tonight that the Ducks and Sun Devils will play at either 4 p.m. on Versus or 7:20 p.m. on ESPN, with ESPN having first choice. Cal-Arizona will be slotted into the other window.
The conference shuffled the lineup for that day, moving an evening FSN slot to 12:30 p.m. and selecting USC-Stanford for that time. That window had been designated for either a regional ABC telecast or a national ESPN telecast, and its been set for ESPN in the 7:20 p.m. slot
