Brandon Spikes only gets supended for 1/2 game against Vandy for potentially inflicting a PERMANENT LIFE ALTERING INJURY to this tailback? I call BULLSH1T! The SEC loses all credibility on this one as far as I am concerned. The fix is in after that game with Arkansas and now this? I don't want to hear it from the SEC fans that troll the message boards calling out LGB as a thug. Just kind of curious what everyone else thinks.

I was seriously enraged by seeing this lack of sportsmanship.

And we all know that it will get no coverage whatsoever!

Honestly though, my reaction was meh. Sure it seems like a soft punishment, but Urban Meyer’s a piece of shit. We knew that, we still know it. Spikes is a piece of shit too, but Florida just lost a big chunk of Juju. I almost feel bad for them. Let’s beat Stanfurd.

The SEC is also wussy

I mean we already know they’re in the tank for Florida and Bama. This just proves it even more.

So I went to Alligator Army

Those guys are crazy, I know better than to try and have a rational discussion with SEC fans, yet I tried to anyway. They are all about pointing out everything everybody else has gotten away with and rationalizing it. Completely ridiculous. Dare I say they are worse than Husky fans?

I was skeptical of what you were saying… then I went and read it. I cannot believe the utter nonchalance of them towards this. You can basically write “and all I care about is winning” after each of their remarks to you, and it would be more understandable.

What brazen disregard for sportsmanship, intelligence and gentlemanly competition… my best friend is a gator fan and from Florida, and if he even says anything near what these guys are saying, I would rip him a new one…

No,

But I am entitled to my opinion.

I don’t know what positive things Spikes may have done in the past; I dont know if he was an outstanding citizen, I dont know if he voulenteers at homeless shelters on his spare time, I dont know if he donates his time to Pop Warner teams in troubled neighborhoods.

Regardless, he intentionally tried to gouge a players eyes out; no matter what he has done to be considered an outstanding citizen he deserves a meaningful punishment.

How do you know what a “meaningful” punishment is? IMO, it’s a punishment that causes someone to change their actions. As far as any of us know, that’s exactly what happened.

--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog

by jtlight on Nov 3, 2009 8:35 PM PST up reply actions

p.s. Let’s not get melodramatic and say “he intentionally tried to gouge a players eyes out.” He stuck his hands in the other person face mask, and the guy that it happened to doesn’t even think Spikes should be suspended.

--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog

by jtlight on Nov 3, 2009 8:38 PM PST up reply actions

Well,

It is clear that Spikes reaches well into the facemask of the UGA RB, and continues to jam his fingers in for an extended period of time; that was no fluke.

If Hout said Blount shouldn’t have been suspended, he would have without a doubt still have been suspended regardless.

We can turn this into a deep philosophical debate about the meaning of a 2 quarter suspension; But two quaters against a meager opponent is undoubtedly too short. I can understand if Meyer inflicted additional punishment not as detrimental to the team (such as Kellys Friday/Monday night jolly jogs). But he has not at least released such details.

Ealey says, "He really didn’t gouge my eyes," Ealey said. "He really didn’t get a chance to get close to my eyes." So, I’m gonna go with him on this one.

Two quaters against a meager opponent is undoubtedly too short.

I honestly don’t know how you can make this judgment. You’re just saying this, but not backing it up with anything.

--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog

by jtlight on Nov 3, 2009 8:52 PM PST up reply actions

I am not the only person that finds this to be too short of a suspension...

Matt Hinton who you rather like shares my views

This is my opinion, It is fine if you dont share my opinion. Accusing me of “just saying this and not backing it up with anything” is meaningless…I can make this judgement because I am entitled to do so

by CaDuck on Nov 3, 2009 9:25 PM PST up reply actions

I’m saying you still haven’t given any reason why it was too short. It’s one thing to say, hey, I think it was too short. It’s a complete other to say it’s undoubtedly too short, and then fail to tell us why it’s too short.

Also, I don’t really think Hinton said that at all:

It would be easier to write this off as a light suspension to keep a good player in the lineup if there was any indication this year that Florida’s top-ranked defense might need Spikes at any point Saturday to slow down the lowest-scoring offense in the SEC; there’s a good chance he would have been out of a lopsided win over the Commodores not long after halftime, anyway, and won’t necessarily get on the field as it stands, especially if the game is the expected blowout. Georgia fans will take it as an appropriate reparation for a relatively minor offense, I’m sure.

--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog

by jtlight on Nov 4, 2009 6:40 AM PST up reply actions

I assure you that Hinton insinuated it was too short,

“think about what he’s done — for a whole two quarters:

Second of all, as I have been repeatedly stating, Its my opinion. In my eyes, it was undoubtedly too short because it was a violent act.

It does not bother me if you disagree with my views. But repeatedly attacking my view because it deviates from yours is pointless. I dont feel that I need to cite everything that I believe, just for your approval.

by CaDuck on Nov 4, 2009 7:22 AM PST up reply actions

I wasn’t attacking your views. I was disagreeing with you. I felt that you can’t just say, “it was undoubtedly too short” without backing that up. That is not needing you to “cite everything you believe.”

But back to my original point, I just don’t think that anyone here (definitely including myself), who has little knowledge of Spikes or the Florida football program, is in any place to judge whether or not this suspension is too short. And if you’re going to claim it’s too short, you better have a good reason backing that up.

I believe that Spikes did something wrong, and the only goal of punishment should be to make sure that he never does that again.

It’s easy to say “The coaches know what is best”. Because, well… they do…

But as observers, and fans – it’s fun to say “BOO!!! TOO SHORT!”

My own opinion is, that was a rather pathetic punishment. More of a wagging of the finger than an actual punishment. Like when you make an sorta inappropriate joke in front of your girlfriend’s parents, and you have to sleep on the couch. (That’s like camping anyway)

I sure as hell wouldn’t have learned anything from sitting out half a football game. And it should have been a harsher penalty simply because it happens all the time.

Also...

This entire thing is stupid. This crap happens in every single pile in college football, especially in rivalry games. Spikes was caught, and for that reason alone should have been suspended. But let’s get off the high horse.

by jtlight on Nov 2, 2009 9:47 PM PST reply actions

I won’t debate whether or not this happens… many people with mangled fingers and scars on their arms will attest to that. My problem is with this mentality, that since it is “assumed” that it does happen, we should just accept that and move on. Is there no progress in this sport. The last thing I want is some blow hard conference commish or rules official to step in and nitpick with the sport even more… at some point the teams and coaches and programs need to police themselves. And Meyer’s action shows contentment to let his program be defined (in some sense, not entirely) with this type of dirty play…

Ok, then what should happen? Two game suspension? Full game? What is the goal here?

If you’re saying that a mere half game suspension is football motivated, you are an idiot. You are as stupid as the people that say that Blount coming back is football related.

To further say that Meyer is content with dirty play, that sounds like something Canzano would say. You don’t know Meyer, and don’t know the football players or the rest of the team. As I said above, I trust Chip to know his own players, and work on them to be better people, and I’ll let people in Florida worry about that.

Well, I don’t think that’s what Matt was saying… I think you guys are agreeing in principle, but differing in values. Matt (or so I’ve gathered) thinks it’s a bad message to send* and that it is setting the bar frightfully low for this kind of conduct and the consequences thereafter; I agree with him here.

However, I agree with Jared as well…

You don’t know Meyer, and don’t know the football players or the rest of the team. As I said above, I trust Chip to know his own players, and work on them to be better people

It’s about “human decisions”, as Chip said himself. In short, Matt thinks Urban made a slightly underadministered human decision.*
