Around SBN: Interview With UMD Athletic Director, Dr. Debbie Yow

Are "homers" helpful?

Isn't one group of cheerleaders quite enough?

Any team with its own announcers is going to have a degree of bias in its coverage. Sometimes it's blatant cheerleading, sometimes contractually obligated favoritism, sometimes subtle reminders that the announcer knows who signs the checks.. but it's usually there.

This year, though, we've been "blessed" with several opportunities to compare and contrast the "neutral" bias of the roaming national crew with the "biased" bias of the Oregon Sports Network.

Last night, since the OSN rebroadcast was right on the heels of the ABC-ESPN live broadcast, there was a good opportunity to compare and contrast the two styles, on one play in particular -- the "WTFumble", in the first overtime.

Star-divide

Admittedly, there was at least some mechanical explanation for the level of confusion among the local boyx.

The OSN folks didn't have the luxury of the high-quality ESPN cameras, or their superior camera angles.. such as the one with the wide shot of the entire pile, clearly showing the Arizona player with the ball in his hand. That is, admittedly, a highly innovative angle, and ABC/ESPN is to be commended for stretching the video curve.

And, Brent and Kirkie didn't have any motivation to use their powers of juju to "will" the fumble to be recovered by a Duck; unlike the OSN gang, who were apparently stuck in a corner of the field directly below the Arizona Bottle and Battery Catapult Brigade, the ABC crew was safely ensconced in an undisclosed bunker (the better to protect those in steerage from Musberger's mad tie).

Still. Repeatedly screaming "THE BALL WAS ON THE TURF!! THE BALL CLEARLY WAS ON THE TURF!", as if somehow the ball being "on the turf" automatically means Oregon recovers a fumble?

Is Joe Giansante paid by the deciBel?

Worse, the normally semi-serious Anthony Newman let Joe drag him right into the paroxysms of outrage.

Props to Mike Bellotti, who has performed admirably in his rookie season as a color dude, and could have a career at this, if he decides being an AD is too strenuous. You can hear MB suppressing the urge to shove Joe and AQ's mics down their salivating, gaping mugs. But then, I've been watching MB for almost 20 years, and I don't recall seeing him get all that worked up over anyone in the media not named Canzano.

Considering the, well, considerable resources available in this area.. is this really the best OSN can do?

Joe Giansante is a total joke. I like homerism, but he’s just simply terrible at his job.

Homers are not a good thing for your program.

I like Jerry Allen

Yes he’s a total homer but he’s so honest about it, I love him. He feels the pain I feel and the joy i feel depending on how things go.

Giansante on the other hand, not so much.

Jerry Allen will stay as long as he wants.

He’s pushing retirement age, anyway.

East Broadway Joe, on the other hand, we may be stuck with regardless. He’s topped out as far as the talent side goes.. and — unless he has some skills heretofore unseen — where’s he going to do any better than here?

If they haven’t encouraged him to spend more time with his family by now, we may be stuck with him untl 2040. By which time I presumably won’t care as much.

Jerry will retire where he is.

Which shouldn’t be too long from now.

Trouble is, the same is likely true for East Broadway Joe. Which means I’ll be throwing Space Food Sticks and virtual remotes at the holo-monitor in 2050.

that's what bothers me about the call on the fumble.

Joe is blind — so eager for the game to be over, especially since he’d just called for a turnover.

Even if “the ball was on the turf”, any objective viewer — with the sound down — would have a very difficult time stating as absolute fact that Oregon had recovered.

At least it’s himself he’s making an ass out of.

I don't care what anyone says

I would rather listen to Giansante 10 thousand times more than Petros Papadakis. Man I hate that Crocs wearing dork!

I'm really torn on Petros

He has an evening sports radio show in the LA area (it might actually be national now), and he does a great job. He’s over the top sometimes, but he generally knows his stuff and is a good host.

On the other hand, he’s terrible doing color commentary for football games. I listen to him way more on the radio than on football broadcasts, so I like him, but I can see that if your only exposure to him was on the FSN game of the week that you wouldn’t be a fan.

There's something to be said for emotionally invested callers

Because otherwise you’d never get this classic.

I have to say I’d much rather be watching a game in which the announcers are enthusiastic, rather than just doing their jobs like they were at a funeral or something. The two callers of the Washington game were a good example of this. I’ve never been so bored in my life. They didn’t even say simple things like “TOUCHDOWN, OREGON!”. I mean, it was so anti-climactic you’d think they were describing an oil change on a Subaru, in their attempt to not be partial to any side.

That said, I don’t need hysterical ranting, either. I think my ideal is just having Bellotti talk – his knowledge, insights, and general sanity are by far the best accompaniment to a football game on television that I’ve found.

This is a good point

I don’t know if Musberger was just off or what, but I found his calls on most of the important plays to be really blase. Even if he did try to put some emotion into the call, it usually came late. I don’t know if the broadcasters don’t have a good view at that stadium, but I was disappointed in Musberger.

That being said, I HATE it when hometown announcers go crazy like that. UA clearly wound up with the ball, and everyone saw it. Just get over it, admit that there was something you missed the first time, and drop the hysteria.

Compared with the USC game, they both seemed .. tired.

Maybe they were tired.

Maybe it was the altitude.

Perhaps they were suffering from turista?

It is one thing to be excited for your team, it is another to be fallacious.

There is most definitely a way to be an animated, local or dedicated team announcer while giving the opponent a fair shake, at least to the degree that truth and speculation of truth is based in reality.

“Kenny Wheaton’s gonna score!” or “The Giants win the penant!” are just completely different from making mistakes while blinded by your favoritism, being sensationalist, speculating foul play when you don’t know all the facts, or at worst intentionally untruthful.

I am also Terrell Brandon.

Well,

In many Charger games, Fouts does broadcasting. Perhaps he could give it a shot in Eugene

Juju, you complete me...And now as your humble-as-ever servant, I kindly request the following:

So, how is it that one brother is named "James", and the next one "Jacquizz"?
Anyways, based on the picture; they look as if they have a relationship thats a little too comfortable.

I mean its Joe Giansante, you just have to get over it

Besides, who watches the JoeG feed? Duck fans, only duck fans, thats how I felt during that play. You know what you are getting with Joe and you can take it or leave it. He is not great but he doesn’t have to be.

Can I get a Gooo Ducks?!

Wish they had the technology to just mute Joe on the playback side.

At the point where we went down in the 4th by ten....

I found it helpful to put the ESPN broadcast on mute and have Jerry soothe me. It’s nice to be able to know what’s going to happen on TV so you can brace for impact. I watched the last drive and overtime without the aid of the radio though.

….and I turned the TV completely off during Petros and Stanford…that man seriously posesses a voice that is capable of making the Pope punch a baby…

that's exactly what I did

My wife was upstairs watching it on TV while I was in the living room.

I noticed that every time I heard a positive shout from up there, something good happened on my TV about 10 seconds later.. and whenever I heard an expletive I was soon inventing my own variation of same.

Midway thru the 4th quarter I moseyed upstairs, to try to determine the source of her newfound psychic ability. Turned out she had the sound down and was listening to Jerry.

This was right before the FG doinked over the bar.

All Duck fans should give credit to my dear wife’s oneness with Juju, because once I eschewed the big screen for the 13" portable and Jerry on the side, the momentum shifted in Oregon’s favor.

I got this one guys.

Joe Giansante is an asshat.

It's spelled "T-A-K-O-T-U-E-S-D-A-Y-S-!-!-!."

I support inroywetrust in his support of The VD Special in his support of me supporting Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.
