MBB Gameday Open Thread: Montana vs. Oregon

Montana Grizzlies at Oregon Ducks, Nov 23, 2009 7:00 PM PST

Who: Montana Grizzlies (3-1, 0-0 Mtn West) vs. Oregon Ducks (3-1, 0-0 Pac-10)
Time: 7pm PST
Location: Mac Court, Eugene, Oregon
Media: Radio, Live Stats

Montana comes to Mac Court to take on the Ducks. WIth both teams coming off a loss, this will be an interesting test on who can bounce back from adversity. Oregon needs to win games like this to get confidence going into the Pac-10 season

ESPN's real-time scoring is creative

Took two points off the board for Montana at the 5:15 mark. WE R CATCHIN UP!

Final 68-55

Considering Montana didn’t score for the first 5 minutes of the game..

this has to go down in history as one of the most recent games.

So, I'm looking at the box score...

…and I have a few questions and knee-jerk observations. Didn’t see the game, didn’t listen to it, so hopefully I don’t put my foot in my mouth.

Where was Catron? Not even listed in the ESPN box score. I knew Dunnigan was hurt. Catron also?

I don’t know a lot about hoops, but I think shooting 33.3% from the field qualifies as terrible. And at home?

I’m done with Longmire. Four points in 23 minutes as a starter…as one of only three upperclassmen? Kent needs to get him out of there. He’s not going to lead this year. He won’t lead next year as a senior. He’s terrible. On the other hand, Teondre Williams scored 16 in 26 minutes off the bench. Williams needs to start and stay on the floor.

Porter. I don’t know what to do about Porter. Love the guy. Gives all of us the warm fuzzies. Reality is, without a super-star point guard around to occupy defenders’ attention, Porter has to manufacturer his shot. It’s just not his thing. He probably has to start losing playing time to guys like Williams and Malcolm Armstead. I hate to say that, but it’s probably in the best interest of the program.

Maybe there’s hope for Garrett Sim (11 points in 22 minutes), but let’s be honest. Many of the other guards have far more upside than Sim. They need to get playing time, and he’ll probably become a victim to over-crowing at the guard positions..

Tonight’s outcome only reinforces my outlook on this season. I could care less about wins and losses or any post-season possibilities. The Pac-10 is way down this year and it’s a great time to get the young guys lots of minutes. Maybe then the Ducks can approach mediocrity next season.

What a deflating loss. Wait, I just said I didn’t care about losses. Jeez that’s hard to do.

TP was injured a bit pretty early on in the game. I’m not sure how much that affected his game the rest of the time. Only got to hear part of the game.

I gave up getting excited about Duck hoops a long time ago

Occasionally I’m pleasantly surprised, but other than AB’s and Freddy’s senior years, my general pessimism has never felt misplaced.

This from someone who used to get in line 2 days in advance for games when I was a student in ’76-77.

I’m even starting to question the flavor of the “Kent can really recruit though” Kool-aid.

Fire Ernie.

FIre him tomorrow, next week, next month , after the season, I don’t care just get him out.

Passing the ball around the perimeter and jacking threes is not an offense.

He needs a true PG

To make it work and there ain’t no Aaron Brooks or Luke Ridnour on this team.

Awww, Good god!

Revenge of the Roper I suppose…Losing to Montana? Really? BAH!

Juju, you complete me...And now as your humble-as-ever servant, I kindly request the following:

So, how is it that one brother is named "James", and the next one "Jacquizz"?
Anyways, based on the picture; they look as if they have a relationship thats a little too comfortable.

I know everyone is going to start jumping on the Fire Ernie bandwagon but consider in this loss that TP twisted his ankle very early in the game and had limited minutes. Couple that with Dunigan and Catron both being out and you have 3/5ths of our starting lineup out of the game. All of these guys have had very productive games early in the season and we should have won against a good Portland team if not for a late game collapse.

I still think the magic number is 14. 4 of our next 7 are against patsies that are must win games and we need to win one game we shouldn’t to make up for the loss against Montana. Missouri, St. Mary’s or Oakland. Doesn’t matter which. If we can do that, we start Pac-10 play at 8-4 (or 7-5 if we can’t pull out that win). With the Pac-10 being as down as it is, we can pull together 6 wins in conference, especially given how other teams have played (I’m looking at you OSU, UCLA and USC)

Don't count on winning one of those three.

Based on how the opponents are doing so far..
Montana State won’t be easy for this team. It had better be a W.
Mizzou: L
St Mary’s: L
MVState: W
Oakland: Maybe. If everyone’s healthy. If. Maybe. But they couldn’t beat Oakland twice when they were healthy. Still predicting L.
IdaSt: Better be a W.
ArkPB: W

No better than 4-3 in this stretch, which puts us at 7-5 going into conf play. At best.

No way this team breaks 500 this season. I’ll bet your paycheck on it.

And why should the goal ever be to “pull together 6 wins in conference”? Gaaaah.

The OP is right. This is a total football buzzkill.

I don't care

No Pac-10 team should EVER EVER EVER lose to a Big Sky team at home, let alone be dominated as Oregon was tonight.

UCLA got beat by Cal State Fullerton, OSU got beat by Sac State and Texas A&M Corpus Christi. None of those should happen either but they did and you move on.

Good riddance EK

Catron is terrible! Kent flat out can’t coach. What good is a good recruiter if your players come in better than when they leave. I can’t stand to hear all the excuses that Ernie will have. They will be the same as last year. As always, I will cheer for this team like crazy and just hope that Ernie goes away. We need a great coach for the new arena and we could get one!!!!!

Man, I’m not really pro-Ernie, but the gloves sure came off quickly this season.

Yup. I am not surprised, considering we now have an in-house replacement.

by ntrebon on Nov 24, 2009 7:22 AM PST up reply actions

I think that is it.

I’m not really anti-Ernie, but it is much more convenient with Dunlap around now. Grass isn’t always greener though, and I think the frustrated Oregon hoops fan should know this…
