Dixonday 2009 open thread
ok so he's probably going to get his ass kicked. And, he's probably not going to throw more than 20 times. but frankly I think i can speak for all of us when I say that we need a new image of dixon on the field, since the most recent one is still to ghastly to even begin to recall (death glare at dviera). Regardless of what happens on the field, still should be pretty cool to see him play on the NFL stage.

I can't wait!
I’m cautiously optimistic. He seems like a pretty smart guy and he’s had time to prepare for this moment, he’s not a rookie. I imagine they’ll set him up with some easy throws to very good receivers and hopefully revive their running game. I wish they were playing the Browns instead of the Ravens, but Dixon has a great opportunity to make a name for himself tonight. Well, that and get us all fired up to spend the next 4 days watching Dixon highlights while listening to I Love My Ducks on infinite repeat.

Check out the current ESPN poll
The question is: “Can the Steelers win at Baltimore with Dixon starting?” Every state in the nation, with one exception, said no.

Why does Oregon think he can win?
I just cannot figure this out. Why would Oregon like Dixon!?

And unnoticed by some
He gets to face off against his old teammate Haloti Ngata, the best Oregon defender I’ve ever seen.

Steelers can so win with Dennis. He’s not Roethlisberger but anyone on this site has seen what he can do. Certainly won’t get his but kicked.

Plus, Mendenhall has played great this season.
If Rashard can put up decent numbers today, Dixon’s life will be much easier. GO STEELERS. I just vomited in my mouth typing that, blaeghguehgh.

Trouble is, they've had a hard time winning lately with their 1st string QB.
I can understand why some would thing the 3rd stringer might not be able to pull it off.

Perfectly said.
And that map makes me hope even more that Dixon kicks ass today. The sad thing is it’s quite likely Ben would not have won it, so if Dixon loses, it will only be because they didn’t have Ben, and it will all be on Dixon. I really, really hope Dixon kicks ass and the Steelers win.
by gamedaytribe on Nov 29, 2009 4:17 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Well, I don't know about that...
All Steeler fans really like DD. ESPN would talk endlass smack about Dixon and why they lost; probably show the Blount punch for no apparent reason as well. But Steeler fans like the guy; he should be okay :)

Probably true, but just going by the fact that Pennsylvania also gave the Steelers no chance to win
with Dixon (from the map).

Fans are generally pissed at the performance this year. Most of it is directed at the offensive line.

Ya, I'd say the Steeler fanbase pretty much loves him.
Kinda salivating waiting for him to get used as a wildcat and/or develop into the next big thing. Steelers aren’t turning on Dixon anytime soon, the rest of any sort of criticism is typical discussion of “inexperience” and the fact that he might not be a pro-style passer.
The first part is 100% valid, who knows if any young QB is ready for the big jump in the pond. The second part, I think, ignores his passing skill because he’s such a great runner.
We shall see.
Pittsburgh is also the perfect place for him, maybe the only team in the league with any sort of patience for development.
I am also Terrell Brandon.

The Steelers might as well run some play action stuff before their crappy defense forces them to start passing to catch-up.

If they don't get a few more pass calls in there
their running game will suffer, the Ravens are simply stuffing the run because they know what’s coming.

especially since i bet him and Coach Tomlin majored in sociology in college and seem like pretty intense thinkers. could possibly lead to magic.

Yeah, this is the #2 defense in the league, and hte #1 is the one he faces in practice.
If he gets to play against anyone else this year, expect him to do very well indeed. There aren’t many NFL QBs who’d be doing this well.

he is so good on the run that he can make plays… keeping him in the pocket and throwing out routes will only get you picked…

DD’s not gettin much blame for this. as well he shouldn’t.
for a 1st game.. on the road against a pretty good defense, he has nothing to be ashamed about.

The thing is, they don't give him any plays in garbage time or anything - Ben plays full games
I really think they should do more to give Dennis game time. No way to prepare a NFL qb unless you give him some playing time. For a guy who’s played 1 series prior to this, he had a pretty decent game.

IF you would have told me
That DD would have 2 TDs and 1 pick in his first start I would have been overjoyed.
The D let him down. They had Baltimore stopped but couldn’t put the hammer in.

Yeah, the general consensus from Steeler fans is that Arians is a living Dildo of a human being.
I have to agree. Playcalling on offense doomed Their chances on the last few drives.

Alright Duck fans
That game right there should make us count our blessing for the offensive genius we have in Chip Kelly. Pittsburgh called 2, yes 2 roll out plays for Dixon all night. Results: 2 touchdowns. The Steelers’ offensive coordinator is total boob.
Kelly mixes plays up, but when he finds something that works, he takes time to make sure that he sets up and calls that play again, and again and again. Thank God for Chip Kelly. Let’s just hope Dixon can go to a team that can use his skills, or the Steelers fire their OC.

I’m really surprised he didn’t pick up on that simple trend. The success warranted at least a few more shots.

I am telling you
the guy is an absolute IDIOT. Most of the successful Steeler drives this year have come on the hurry up with Ben calling his own plays. Arians is a joke! He makes me want to send hate mail to the front office.

In the first half, Arians seemed to have the picture..
But he must have lost a few million neurons between the third and fourth quarters!

And of course
Any good D, and the Ravens certainly are, will eventually pick up on that trend.

You cant pick up on something that is completely abandoned for no reason. He abandoned the running game for a few drives, and he forgot about play action and bootleg passes.

rec that.
Considering what happened after the last time we saw him run up the field untouched for a TD.

Same Zona fan
Posted a picture of that hit during the game. I found it when I tried to find an embeddable copy of his TD run.

What would be even better
Is if we could get a picture of him pointing to the sky after scoring that. It was real cool.

Yellow, white, and a dark "carbon" - might as well be his college jersey.
Kinda looks like an O on the hat, too.
Oh, and he’s in the endzone, that’s maybe the most familiar part.
I am also Terrell Brandon.

I feel bad for Steeler fans. They have a braindead OC. Sad really...

Dixon proved tonight that he can play in this league. He’ll have a career after this one.

12 of 26 145 yards 1 TD 1 INT
3 rushes 27 yards 1 TD
Considering the game Arians called (or lack thereof) in the 4th quarter; DD played damn well :)

I would have taken that in a heartbeat
And Pittsburgh was one stop away from winning it.
They really blew it when it mattered.

Son of a ding dong dirtburger.
Nice little game overall for Ddix, producing when he had a chance but hamstrung by conservative playcalling all night, then a rookie mistake in crunch time unfortunately.
Matt Daddy looks like you and I are brothers, my Steeler roots actually preceed my Duck roots.
I start the petition today, offensive coordinators anywhere and everywhere:

Me too
the first picture of me is one wearing a yellow and black knit Steeler cap. My Dad had a HS buddy playing for the steel curtain, so I was raised on defensive 3-4 football.
Then I went to Oregon and my football fandom was complete

I think he did pretty good when you add it up. Steelers got to OT, on the road, with
a back-up QB. Of course, they should have had at least one more win under their
belt before this game, anyway.
