Friday Juju/Panic Open Thread
Not having an opposing blog makes for a strange week. The USC win, coupled with some of the favorable matchups that Jared talked about, has me feeling really good about the Stanford game this weekend. Then I think about the last time I felt really good about a game. We were playing on some field that wasn't green.
PANIC!
My feeling good about a game has not been kind to us in the past. This has put me in major panic mode, and I think we need to humble ourselves to appease the Juju.
This thread is open to humbly discuss all of our reasons to panic for this game, as well as to shower Juju with compliments.

It’s really too bad that Gerhart is their best player. If Luck was their star, we could all say, “Stanford needs more than Luck to beat the Ducks”.
But then again, I love me some puns.
Oh, you're into S & M? You enjoy pun-ishment.

In Panic news...
I am actually a bit worried about our defense. I really want to see them clamp down on the Stanford offense. Our defense has been the best in the Pac-10, and I’d like to see that continue.
Relying on defense as a Duck fan is such a weird feeling.

I think it adds to my PANIC
I have this sinking feeling that old Aliotti is going to hear about what new Ailotti has been doing and figure out a way to get his body and defense back.
OMG, my hopes rely on Aliotti…. PANIC!!!!!
Kenny Wheaton #20; The Pick - 1994 v UW. Matthew Harper #20; The Pick #2 - 2007 v USC. John Boyett #20;...
I just got this hilarious image
Kathy Bates has the real Aliotti locked up in her basement and puts on an Aliotti suit everyday and comes in to be the UO D-Coordinator. Then I just got a terrifying image of James Caan finding the real Aliotti locked up and setting him free.
PANIC!!! Someone find James Caan and tie him up!

Where are Duck fans...
Congregating before the game on Saturday in Palo Alto? I will be flying to Cali tonight and driving into the Bay Area tomorrow morning. Where is the best place to tailgate with other Duck fans?
Both gold and muck come out of the same shaft...
Most esteemed JuJu
we humbly request your aegis for tomorrow’s contest and entreat you to ignore the 44% of voters who, for some reason, have not paid you your requisite respect with their votes. I can only assume that they are Stanford fans endeavoring to bring your wrath upon us with their reverse-voting malfeasance. But you, almighty JuJu, are far too powerful to be fooled by such shenanigans! Be with us tomorrow in Palo Alto! We offer this supplication in Peter Sirmon’s name, quack quack.

Yes. What he said.
Please, Juju, all-powerful keeper of college football, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
Furthermore, spare us from the nonsensical wrath of Lou Holtz and Dwight James and Canzano. Lastly, please punish Phil Steele, because he sure as hell knows not what he’s doing…and, in siding with our team by a mere single point, clearly is mocking your great power. Yes, punish Phil Steele, great Juju, with an Oregon win by three touchdowns.
We praise you in the name of The Blessed Jairus Byrd!
By the grace of Juju, we all are day-to-day.
Bow in front of the chosen one, Jairus Byrd!
Juju, we all respect and have grown to cherish your innate and glorious power!

PANIC
Andrew Luck is THE BEST quarterback in the country, Toby is a beast and leads the league in rushing, emotions after such a big win, Jim friggin Harbaugh, and that damn dancing tree!!! Hopefully the Juju will give us a shot at this one.
I can get you a toe by three o'clock this afternoon.
You are on top of the terrible joke patrol today!
All over it!

I'll be nervous
Until LMJ rips off his first 10+ yard run of the game and we sack their QB for the first time.
After all, thanks to Juju, I know we’ll win the day.

I think the spread is too low. It seems like Stanford is another upset du jour, much like when people were picking Washington over Oregon.
On paper, Oregon wins this game by 2 TDs at least. Then again, maybe the bookies are thinking that Stanford can control the ball, keep Oregon’s offense off the field, and keep it close.

You know what's ridiculous?
Cal +7 over OSU. I picked Cal to win in our pick em contest, but that seems ridiculously high for that line. I don’t think Cal should be favored by more than 3, if that.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
I think most Cal fans agree with you. But the UO-5 line is more egregious. I understand the time of possession argument and the grass vs turf argument, but it still doesnt make sense to me. This should be a -10, at least… if not -17.5ish.
I agree with you that it’s low, but is it that low? I heard it was up to -7, and maybe it should be at -10, but given all the other factors (road game, possible let down, Stanford’s success at home vs. UO’s road record, etc.) I’m not surprised it’s stayed lower than it should be based on talent.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
I think it pretty darn low. Just form a technical perspective… one thing the computers and book makers do is an analysis of common opponents. Both teams have beaten all three common opponents. Here are the margins.
STANFORD (score, margin, location)
WASH 34-14 / 20 h
WAZZU 39-13 / 26 h
UCLA 24-16 / 8 h
+54, avg margin of 18
OREGON (score, margin, location)
WASH 43-19 / 24 r
WAZZU 52-6 / 46 h
UCLA 24-10 / 14 r
+84, avg margin of 28
And Oregon has been on the road two more times and one of those road games was without Masoli. Even without the 3pt home field advantage additions/subtractions, the baseline would be -10.
It can be annoying sometimes. Now dat I’m rit, all dez hos want a slice o me, ya know?
My boss took Stanford and I gave him 10 points. I just wanted some reassurance but all you guys are so pessimistic. Are you guys secretly Cal fans?
Honestly?
I think we’re going to win by 17 points. I’m just not surprised the line is low, that’s all. Isn’t Oregon 7 – 1 or 6 – 2 against the spread? I don’t gamble on games, but from what I’ve heard, the betting in college football is best in the first couple weeks when lines are way too tentative because bookies don’t have a good read on things yet. It’s possible that a lot of people got burned by Oregon in games 1 and 2 and haven’t gone back, so the lines stay lower than they should be.
Honestly, that’s just random theory that popped into my head, I have no idea if it’s true or not.
Defending maligned chants since 2009
1 TD is way low, but keep in mind - - -
- – - that the Vegas oddsmakers couldn’t care less about hitting the actual game result. They’re looking for a line that will get 50% of the bettors on each side. That way they make money on the vig no matter what happens. Public perception is far more important than team quality.
There was a great New Yorker article some years back describing exactly how the oddsmakers go about finding “the right number.” I’ll see whether I can dig it up online.
Life is a sport: Watch other people play it.
WTF? With my vote I broke the tie between "kick their ass" and "leave it to JuJu which has been working so nicely"?
Aww, now I’m just in full piss my pants panic mode.

Clinton Synder Out with an Injury
I’m not sure if he’s the Cardinal’s top linebacker but looks to be an important loss for the game

Injured you say? Yeah, right
He is clearly acting injured to protect himself from the immense and all powerful jukes of LMJ. LMJ’s jukes have been known to cause opposing defenders to spontaneously combust.

Panic Indeed
I realized that I do in fact own a panic button! I pressed the one on my car remote and listened to my car horn honk for a minute straight.
I plan to do the same prior to kickoff…
Oh, and of course…Praise be to Juju!!!!
May we hand you your taints on a silver platter...
College Gameday @ Air Force…
Are there no good games at the end of the season?!?!
It's spelled "S-H-U-F-E-L-T-U-N-S-U-R-E-O-F-H-I-M-S-E-L-F"
They always go to a game between the military academys at one point in the year. They skipped over a big game (Alabama/LSU) this week to go there.

Herbie just advocated Masoli for Heisman.
Nice!

I actually think LMJ deserves more attention than Masoli does.
It's spelled "S-H-U-F-E-L-T-U-N-S-U-R-E-O-F-H-I-M-S-E-L-F"
Yeah, and to be honest, Masoli's awesomeness has gotten a very late start.
There’s no chance he wins it, and I put next to no chance for LMJ. Best kept secrets I suppose.
Addicted To Quack [dot] com; Six-hundred and ninety-four yards of total offense.
Yeah, but if you look at all the other candidates..
They’ve all had awful games or just stretches of complete mediocrity.
Yep.
And that very well could be what’s keeping Masoli’s hopes in.
