Postgame Reaction Open Thread: Oregon vs. Stanford
Tough to stop Toby Gerhart. The guy is the real deal and the only positive I took from his play against us is the fact that he's a senior. Offense did it's job but maybe for the first time all year, the defense just didn't show up. Leave your thoughts in the thread below.
Oh and another thing, we still control our own destiny to get to the Rose Bowl.

Wow.
I didn’t see this coming.
We definitely can still win the Pac, but this is just a big emotional blow.
47-20, 42-3, 65-38...So many scores to choose from!
"Nobody east of the Rockies talks about Oregon football, and that's just not right".
good news is that we still control our own destiny for the rose bowl
Bad news is that our defense and special teams got lit up like a Christmas tree and we face some very good teams in the next three weeks…..two of which have balanced offenses
We all got to cocky.
End of story. Win the last three games and win the fuckin Rose Bowl
Save the National Championship for next year.

Penalties and time of possesion.
The story of the game. They held the ball twice as long, we had three times as many penalty yards.
Life is hilarious.
On the plus side
This probably means we have a 4 PM instead of 7 PM start next week.

I believe all Viking fans must be masochistic!!
Um, I have no idea how you can say that. We lost to you twice, both of which left a horrible taste in most Duck fan’s mouths. Why would we want to play you again? All we got out of it was two losses and even worse…black eyes for our program in the court of public opinion (pardon the pun). I, for one, hope we never play you again.
As for as the “bright side” mentioned above, sorry we had to lose to Stanford but trust me. We would trade this loss for a win any day, regardless of what it does to your hopes of BCS crashing.

If they win out, say goodbye to hope of making a decent bowl game. Your conference is really holding you back, blame things on the BCS all you want.

I was just commenting on your fans nice post
I guess it is classy to be happy that you lost just because of what it does to another team….yeah real classy….. I was hoping you guys would win out, but when I see posts like the one I replied to, I think my statement says it all. Nice of your classy fans to look for a “bright side” to your loss. Talk about some high class fans….why would your fans say that?

Dude…You are coming into a site where people are upset after a big loss. These fans are probably going to be saying things that are a little emotional and somewhat irrational. By the way, you must also realize that your team, is probably not high on our appreciation list at the moment, so making inflammatory comments is most likely going to get you called out.
Go back to Idaho, pick your Potatoes, and cheer for your team that hasn’t played a real game since September 3rd.

How proud can you feel for a program if that is all you are rooting for.
No one shall mention the season that shall not be named.
Very Proud
From division 1a to the big time in 15 years..I am a proud alum and happy where our football program is headed. Where we finish and where we go in the post season is not in our control, so I just wait to see what happens. It is not really in our hands…. or yours. We just have to wait and see how the season plays out. Hell we could lose and it wouldn’t matter. As they say that’s why they play the game. I’m not here to be a troll, I was just curious to what the duck fans had to say about the game, and then I read the above comment, and felt I should comment back.

Forget about Oregon and focus on selling out games.

It shouldn't be tough to sell out games in a tiny stadium.
Not to mention, in Idaho there is not much competition for ticket sales.

Brutal.
The Ducks D got blown out of the water. It is hard to imagine that Stanford has the losses they have playing like they did. I think the real Allioti showed up today. Stop the run and forget about the pass…Uhh…NOT! Luck did a great job and the O-line let the Furd do what they wanted. This was hard to watch. Couple that with having to listen to the Fox Sports “broadcasting team.” From halfway thru the 1st, I was watching in silence…on a Dolby 7.1 surround sound system. That is how bad it was…
ASU at home. I look forward to the game as I will finally be home to catch a game. I hope to see some of you there.
May we hand you your taints on a silver platter...
Okay, let's be fair.

only because

And because our offense was pretty much full tilt.
We weren’t hapless, we weren’t making stupid mistakes (too much.) We entirely deserved this, and the blame rests squarely on getting outplayed at the line.

I was really worried about this game
it was virtually impossible to avoid an emotional letdown after last week, Stanford had two weeks to rest up and game plan, and they’re the one Pac-10 team who will line up and run it down your throat — the perfect anecdote to team speed like the Ducks have. The Ducks are still an excellent team, they just didn’t have a good game today on the defensive side of the ball. Look out Sun Devils…they can’t make the line high enough for that game.

That game played out pretty much exactly how Stanford needed it to.
Oregon was off on both sides of the ball to start the game, and Stanford just came out amped up and executing EXTREMELY well.
I have to say, Stanford really impressed me. Harbaugh is a great coach, and that team is impeccably well coached. I did enjoy watching their style as a complete contrast to Oregon’s. It was a battle between philosophies, and the old school won out today. Luck was incredibly accurate, and him and his receivers made perfectly executed plays more often than oregon’s dbs really got burned—some of their biggest plays were catches by receivers that were very well covered. They just made the plays.
I don’t think there’s any reason to panic, just yet. Stanford’s game plan, executed as well as it was, is probably the most perfectly suited to beat Oregon of any team we have played this year. AZ has a better offense, but our defense matches up with Arizona’s offense much better than against stanford. It will be a tough game in Tucson, but I still feel pretty good, overall.
Above all, props to Stanford. I am glad they are bowl eligible, they will represent the Pac-10 well.
Luck looked like Peyton Manning out there
Seriously.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Seriously, he just made perfect throw after perfect throw.
Harbaugh said they would need to play their best game of the year to win today. That’s what happened. I can’t feel too bad about losing like that.
Oh and props to Harbaugh
He’s done an amazing job turning that program around.

I just know someone (NFL, or someone like a Michigan or another top notch "storied" college program)
Is gonna come with some huge money and try to steal him……….
You guys dont have to worry about Kelly going anywhere…….he’s got the best job in the Northwest IMO……….
But Stanford will always be limited and I just know I have to enjoy my time with Coach Harbaugh as much as I can…….because he probably wont be around much longer

According to Tedford (heard in a radio broadcast)
… he’s moving ok and they think it’s a concussion
In other words, Go Bears!
Sigh,
I dont know what to make of this game. Our offense stepped up, but our defense looked like a bunch of high school kids out there. Masoli played great…LMJ dropped two major passes; but had a decent night in terms of numbers. Dickson fumbled it, very surprising to see him do that. Our special teams played mediocre, poor punts and kick coverage (blah blah I know Owosu is good blah blah). I just dont know what happened to our defense…
Can we recover in time for ASU? I think so, ASU has an abysmal offense. They do have a decent defense though.
I just dont know what to make of this game. Fluke or serious defensive problem?

CaDuck...I think it was a mix of fluke and a balanced conference...
This is what makes college football so exciting. Yes, it sucks that it happened to our team, but week in and week out the better teams don’t win. The Pac-10 is ridiculously balanced this year…add that to the fact that Stanford had a game plan and executed perfectly in the first two quarters and you have a recipe for an upset. Our offense kept us is in it, and they didn’t give up…evident by the emotion the players were showing when they dropped passes. This team has heart.
I just thought it was weird for a team that seemed SO focused to look completely lost out there on defense. Those corner blitzes were coming slow and they were constantly getting chipped off the lone. Just chalk it up to a bad day defensively. I don’t think any of us thought that Oregon was going to go undefeated in the Pac. Hopefully this is the late season wake-up call they need.
Also Stanford beats teams that beat USC
We should never allow ourselves to be scheduled vs. Furd the week after playing USC.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Game Summmary:
Stanford’s O-line dominated…our D-line had zero success getting to Luck. Any QB at this level can shred a secondary when given that much time to throw. Also, their line also had our blitz packages figured out, because not a single one worked…they picked it up every time.
Yeah, the refs helped them out some, but put this loss squarely on the D’s inability to control the line of scrimmage.
I sure hope Best is OK, he did not look good when he landed. Pray that a concussion is all that it was.
"KENNY WHEATON'S GONNA SCORE!! KENNY WHEATON!!--Jerry Allen, 1994"
About the D-Line
I think it helped the Furd that they had a BYE week, because that same, undersized D-line wore down SC’s all-NFL offensive line…so I just think that they were better prepared for the endurance test that our D-line puts on opposing O-lines. Plus, those corner blitzes were coming off the edge so slowly…Luck had plenty of time to notice them (as did their FB who was chippin’ those DB’s all game) and just picked the secondary apart with some amazing, once-in-a-season type throws.
I look forward to Monday and how this team (who showed that they were chompin’ at the bit to get after it after the Boise loss) regroups. My guess is practice will be plenty intense this week.
I blame Phil Steele
He finally picks us and we lose.

Most other teams
probably would have thrown in the towel after continously being down by double digits most of the game.
Major props to the offense for doing their usual thing and making the Stanford lead evaporate within minutes. The D eventually started making some stops, but by then they had hemorrhaged too many yards and points.
Plus, the defense only started getting stops when it was obvious that they were going to run it 3 times, and even then they’d get a first down or 2 before getting stopped. Fifty one freaking points.

Stanford fan here...
… and based on what I saw at the game….
you guys are scary good. There was never a moment when Oregon had the ball that we weren’t expecting them to score. It took (and I’m not exaggerating here) Stanford’s best game in almost a decade to beat you guys.
Also, don’t be too hard on your defense. Gerhart was playing out of his mind and Luck threw a few balls that were just spot on perfect. It was just a game of offense all around (almost 1100 total yds of offense combined!)
Assuming there’s no mental letdown after this game, I’d be shocked if Oregon doesn’t win the Pac-10.

Gut check time.
What are we made of? Time to find out in the coming weeks; are we a great team or just another average one.
I have faith in the staff, we will rebound.
LMJ learned a TON this game-I have a feeling there will be no more dropped touchdown passes.
Masoli still played great! 330 yards and 3 TD’s, including countless drops.
Maehl scored a TD and did not fumble. I have officially forgiven him.
Special Teams are still inconsistent.
D-line finally was manhandled due to their collective small size.
I am worried, we have not played to well on the road this year…At least we get two of the next three at home.

They wont miraculously find a first year player that is like Gerhart.
Stanford will not find a freshman that is 6’1 230 and extremely fast for his size. Hell, even Gerhart himself did’nt have a monster freshman year. So no, Stanford wont find another RB like Gerhart that would kill us next year.
Repent! Juju is obviously not pleased!
Who says it has to be a guy like Gerhart for the running game to be effective though?
You make it sound like he is the end all be all……but it takes the OL as well.
Sure Gerhart was the one who gashed you last night…….but he got 90% of the carries too…….I feel confident enough that the Stanford Running Game will be fine next year with out Gerhart (assuming Harbaugh is still there of course)
Pass the chocolate cake!
by norcaliangelsfan on Nov 8, 2009 7:28 AM PST up reply actions
We have no trouble at all dealing with scatbacks behind great O-lines.
Case in point, Joe McKnight.
When we have had to face a runner as physical as Gerhart…We know what happens. Your O-line opened up initial holes, but Gerhart dragged tacklers another 5 yards on every play (regardless of what your O-line was doing).
Our defense has amazing speed, so unless you find another fast bruiser; your running game will not be too effective against our defense.
Repent! Juju is obviously not pleased!
Well your pass defense didnt fare much better either...........
Pass the chocolate cake!
by norcaliangelsfan on Nov 8, 2009 7:38 AM PST up reply actions
Because we were geared up to stop Gerhart the entire game.
We needed 9 in the box just to bring him down, that opens up opportunities in the passing game.
That is why I previously stated that I don’t think Stanford will be too good next year…Teams wont be staking the box anymore. A QB"s best friend is a stellar running game for that very reason.
Repent! Juju is obviously not pleased!
Guess we shall see my friend.
