LeGarrette Blount Reinstated
Jay Allen was just on 95.5 the game in Portland reporting that LeGarrette Blount will be reinstated for the ASU game. Report said, AD Mike Bellotti requested reinstatement Sunday evening and Larry Scott of the Pac-10 reviewed it this morning and gave Oregon the go ahead.
He will be available to play this Saturday against ASU.
Interesting side note: Allen speculated that Oregon waited to bring him back in front of the home crowd.
Blount said he is happy for the second chance.

Taking into account
the completely disgraceful display of the Stanford band’s halftime show, I think it was a good decision…

Yeah. It was also the fact that it seemed, to quote a BR article, like fifty people wearing red jackets wandered onto the field at the same time, and decided to play off-key music.

I thought it was kinda funny...
in an ultra-nerdy sort of way. A good way to tell if one is too uptight is to not be able to laugh at one’s own foibles…even the worst ones. So next time you screw up, don’t hide it—punch your shame in the face and laugh it off. ;)

That's what they do
They are always a little crude to say the least. Its their style.
Frankly, I have no problem with it.

I could care less if some random group of students did anything like that. I have a problem with it because it’s an official group from the university, and those are things being announced over the stadium intercom. That shouldn’t happen.

In the early 90s
They did a famous sketch making fun of the collapse of the Oregon timber economy IN EUGENE. That was far more offensive than this.

Yeah, I know. I’m not saying this one is particularly bad. I’m saying that this halftime show and the collapse of the timber economy and the spotted owl all shouldn’t be coming from any official university-sponsored group.

The Harvard band is even worse
I attended a Harvard-Yale game with my dad (a Harvard alum) many years back and both the Yale AND Harvard bands (but especially Harvard) were quite un-PC to say the least.

They've been disciplined for it before
They did a routine in the late ’90’s where they made fun of UCLA. Several UCLA players were involved a scandal where they were awarded handicap parking passes so the Stanford band marched in the form of a handicap sign. I’m pretty sure they got suspended for that (it was either that or something more egregious, which wouldn’t surprise me).

I was at that game
It was right in the middle of the spotted-owl controversy, and it was truly offensive. As I recall they did formations in the shape of an owl and a chainsaw – and probably some stuff I have forgotten. I think Stanford actually apologized and suspended the band afterward.

Stanford’s a weird quirky place…band, drunken mascots getting 86’d, “Full Moon on the Quad”…etc. they’re creating their own traditions which shouldn’t be taken too seriously…

Exactly
Just like your jerseys (meaning most Oregon fans like them, but everyone outside doesn’t), the Stanford folks love their band and their tree. Everyone else thinks they are a little ridiculous

I guess I see a difference in that our uniforms have never gotten us suspended, nor banned from playing in some stadium ever again. If Stanford likes having a mascot that gives me nightmares even worse than the UW Dawg Pound logo, and I think it’s dumb, then I shrug.
But the university as a whole should not officially promote tastelessness like Furd’s halftime shows, nor turn the stadium mike over to someone who’ll talk about “putting the dick back in dictator.”

well i guess since the stadium is only half full (and half of those are the opposing teams), they aren’t too worried about offending their own patrons. its not like they depend on the football team for revenue like most schools.
distasteful? yes. funny? yes.

I see what you’re saying. My point was that the Stanford folks LOVE their band, and while they are controversial, MOST of what they do is harmless, and even to a point somewhat clever.
I definitely don’t agree with the jabs at the timber industry. But even the handicap situation wasn’t making fun of handicap people, it was obviously making fun of the UCLA players. But it is treading on a awfully sensitive subject for a lot of people.

its more fun to point and laugh at others. sometimes we have to suck it up when its about us for the greater good. i think the band is pretty corny. sometimes it’s clever. then again, for the longest time, the band was prob the only reason to attend games so they had to push the envelope and “creative process”.

Yeah, I know. I’m not complaining that people are joking about it. I just think that it is really, really, really not anywhere near the role of an official university organization to mock a conference rival for one of their players losing control. It’s not “OMG, someone at Stanford made fun of the LGB situation.” It’s “Really, Stanford? As an organization, you’re going to do that?”
Also, as much as I did find the pregame show funny, poking fun at Oregon by way of Oregon Trail and LGB is not exactly being creative.

DO they love their band? I think a lot of the older alums are embarrassed by the band’s behaviour, and whenever I’ve been there for a game, pretty much everyone outside of the student section gives their performance a fairly tepid response.
Oh, if only the Furd had an SBN blog so we could find out the answers to such questions!!
So, basically, you gotta Go Bears!

Speaking of older alums…a lot of the Duck fans near us seemed like they had no clue about Oregon football. Lots of “We want Costa” going around almost as soon as Masoli did anything bad, for one.

Which I deserve since I went to the debacle that was the Indiana game.
But seriously, these are the last three I have/will attended:
2005 Cal-Epic monsoon, Dixon’s first start.
2007 ASU-Big game, loudest I’ve ever seen it.
2009 ASU-The return of LGB.
And lets not even count the famous Harrington comeback vs. ASU, which I also attended.

I’ve never been one to hate trash talking, so long as the one doing it backs it. When Quizz was going toe-to-toe with SC’s “All-American Linebacking Crew”, he gave off a swagger that the rest of the team fed off of. But he was dominating them.

btw, OSU just got another basketball recruit out of brooklyn. looks pretty good. i hope the next coach doesnt recruit nearly as well…

Something I’m not entirely clear on:
Why didn’t the NCAA ever touch Blount? I was under the impression that unless it was during a game or involved amateur status, it was a school/conference thing, but I’m not 100% sure.

Since it was a post-game incident then the NCAA has no jurisdiction. Had the punch occurred pre- or in-game then the NCAA would most certainly have taken action of their own.
by jcolomy on Nov 9, 2009 1:29 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I’m under the impression that the NCAA actually has very little disciplinary control over these things. Almost all of the jurisdiction is with the individual conferences. I saw something to this effect in relation to the Dez Bryant situation. Bryant was one case where the NCAA had ultimate disciplinary power, and because it had so little, it went completely overboard (IMO) on the punishment.
So I’m not sure the NCAA even COULD have gotten involved.

Returning kicks with Barner?
just a thought, he doesn’t have the burst speed, but he sure could bowl some people over in front of Kenjon. any takers?
Also I know we don’t use a fullback but I’d like to see a two back set with him in it. I know we already run some, but this way we have power as well as speed.
Frankly I just want to see a hurdle or two, I’m happy he gets another chance, but the team is doing good just how it is.

I love the idea of the zone read triple option with Blount taking the fake (or the ball) up the middle. Or even the play that Kelly ran a couple times where Holland came in motion from the WR position to take the hand off instead put LMJ in motion and then either hand off to Blount up the middle Maosoli pull it back and take it outside… all of new wrinkles for this offense to help keep the ASU defense off balanced.
