Quack Fix: Basketball prepares for St. Mary's, a few Rose Bowl links
Well, things have really slowed down this week. Here's the quack that's out there:
- The Duck men's basketball team has a chance at revenge this weekend. After losing to St. Mary's two years in a row, and a historically bad loss last weekend at Missouri, the Ducks will be going for the win tomorrow, though without Joevan Catron and possibly without Tajuan Porter, who is listed as day-to-day. Bob Clark's practice report for yesterday also had an interesting note. The cold weather in Eugene so affected Mac Court that most players were practicing in long sleeve shirts. Yep, it's time for a new arena.
- SBNation's Big 10 blog, The Rivalry, Esq., has an interview with AndyPanda from Building the Dam, to learn a bit about the Ducks from their rival. While Andy does a good job overall, he stumbles into the same excuses many Beaver fans do, blaming lost opportunity for the loss. So quickly the Beaver fans forget that on their last 2 drives, with the game on the line, the Beavers had 10 plays for 37 yards.
- Hank Stern from the Willamette Week takes a page from ATQ and does a Q&A with an OSU fan to talk about everybody's favorite topic: Terrelle Pryor.
- Ted Miller has a post comparing the preseason and postseason Pac-10 all conference teams.
- tOSU bloggers are starting to talk about the game. Here's a post on the early point spread from the Buckeye Blog. The early opinion of tOSU seems to be that the Buckeye's will push the Ducks around on offense and stop the Ducks spread offense on defense. This shouldn't really surprise anyone. Then again, the Buckeye's couldn't beat the 6th place Pac-10 team. At home. Against a true freshman QB who was started for the second time.
- Lastly, if you were looking for Rose Bowl tickets, looks like you're going to have to buy them through a third party, as the Ducks will use up their allotment.
As always, leave your comments and links below. GO DUCKS!

I think this is going to be a long, long mens basketball season…although, part of me wants a terrible season so Ernie will maybe get cut loose. If it weren’t for that random Elite 8 run he’d be out already and perhaps we’d be on a good path. And moving to Matt Knight Arena next year, this would make a perfect time to start anew on the sidelines.
Don’t get me wrong, Mr. Kent is a swell dude. I’ve met him and he’s an awesome human being, but I don’t know what it is. Maybe he recruits poorly for his schemes. I’m not a basketball expert so this question would probably be better answered by someone else. However, I’m cognizant enough to realize the time for change has come.
And by “random” I mean the 2007 run…after that dismal 05-06 season. The deep tourney run was clearly Ernie’s only saving grace, as everyone and their mom were calling for his head following 2005-06.
Some of us have been calling for his head for years.
With great talent (Freddie & the Lukes, Brooks & the Pre-fab Four), EK’s teams topped out in the regional finals, and neither the KU or Florida games were particularly close (yes, they led Kansas at halftime, yippee).
Ernie Cant’s destiny is to be retired along with his beloved Mac Court, which for all its charm is a pretty crappy place to view a game, if you aren’t in the cushy seats downstairs.
I can’t wait for the new arena, and a fresh start in other areas as well.
those who do not remember history should read my blog...
we have very different opinions on Ernie but even I laughed at the “Ernie Cant” moniker. Well done

Autzen Stadium is where great teams go to die." - J. Brady McCullough, The Michigan Daily.
This made me giggle...
So to me the answer seems simple. Get two defenders into backfield — one for the quarterback and one for the guy on the option.
From the anOSU bloggers report on how to stop the spread… Just get TWO guys into the backfield. What the hell is Kelly going to do they have found the secret to beating Oregon’s success. Crap we’re screwed PANIC!!!!
Oregon State, Oklahoma State, Ohio State..just another OSU. Free Dennis Dixon!!!
I think they should try and put as many guys in the backfield as they can, that way there are less people to look stupid in the secondary as LMJ runs by them
Oregon State, Oklahoma State, Ohio State..just another OSU. Free Dennis Dixon!!!
If you aren’t near LMJ, he won’t have to juke you out of your shoes.
Makes sense to me!
its spelled "S-h-u-t-t-h-e H e-l-l-U-p-F-E-L-T"
i know how to stop your silly, futuristic offense...
just put 10 guys in the box and have pryor play the ‘roaming safety’. you guys are so screwed. and to think it’s your fault, i got this idea from your threads! hold on one second, i’m just emailing tressel the new game plan…
excellent, yes, you guys are officially screwed : )
in all seriousness — some of our bloggers are an embarrassment to the internet.
are we sure Taylor Mays and Pryor arent actually the same person? maybe they switched teams over the summer. that’d explain a lot.
Life is about growth. People are not perfect when they're 21 years old. - Bill Walton
They’re not the same, we’re sure, Mays throws better
Oregon State, Oklahoma State, Ohio State..just another OSU. Free Dennis Dixon!!!
Well… only Pryor, with his 1.9 forty, could make it to the other side of the field in time to stop that one Masoli scramble…
I think NEP is on to something.
its spelled "S-h-u-t-t-h-e H e-l-l-U-p-F-E-L-T"
anOSU only has 10 players play on offense. Pryor plays QB and WR. He’ll throw the deep pass to where nobody is and then use his 1.2 forty speed to run and catch his own pass
Oregon State, Oklahoma State, Ohio State..just another OSU. Free Dennis Dixon!!!
really matt daddy?
taylor mays throws a better ball than pryor? i thought you were above such comments, lol.
That's why each defender will wear three shoes
So he still has one for the post-joke chase to the end zone.
By the way, if Pryor lines up at WR can we put TJ Ward on him for a “bump” at the line? He might be big but I don’t think he’d enjoy press coverage with Ward. Even if Pryor catches the ball there will still be tears.
by JonathanPDX on Dec 11, 2009 12:37 PM PST up reply actions
if he lines up at WR we should just pop his ass even if its a 15 yard penalty.
just sayin.

i assure you...
pryor will not be playing any WR
what was the game where they were throwing fades to him last year? subbed Krenzel (sp?) in and let him go to work…
Life is about growth. People are not perfect when they're 21 years old. - Bill Walton
that was the fiesta bowl against texas...
tressel incorporated that because he had a viable 2nd option at QB; someone to throw the ball to pryor. and no, it wasn’t krenzel, he graduated about 6 years ago. the qb you speak of was named todd boeckman.
and axeman, great analysis on what it would take to have a great start to the game… NOT!
i knew krenzel was wrong as soon as i typed it. bah. you should really look into this Justin Roper kid at Montana. big goofy white guy. he’s a Tressel prototype.

Another tOSU blog post...
This one breaking down their offense.
While the usual BSU/Stanford comparisons are made, this blogger at least ends on a realistic note.
That all sounds easy enough, but I’ve got a feeling that the Buckeyes are bringing a knife to a gun fight. Here comes the Ducks’ scoring attack and hell is comin’ with it. Can Ohio State’s offense actually score with the Ducks? Their rushing attack has racked up yards the last half of the season, but there’s not a ton of points to show for it.

Rose Bowl prep begins today:
Today’s practice will be conducted in the evening, allowing coaches time to get settled after a week on the road and players time to complete final exams. The Ducks will practice in their customary morning slot Saturday through Monday, break for two days, then reconvene Thursday for the first of five more practices in Eugene.
Another note, one of the advantages of playing on New Years, it’s a lot easier to fit in all 15 NCAA allowed practices…

In other football news,
Notre Dame has just announced its latest expensive head coaching boondoggle, Brian Kelly. What do you think — five, six years for this one, or will he actually be the real deal?
"[Juju] is a magical, fragile thing. It's when you've pleased the god of football, and he decides to shine his glorious bounty upon your team. If you anger him, he takes it away." --Hank Hill, paraphrased slightly
Let's check some details about Kelly:

yeah kelly is an excellent coach
but he has to face the facts and let the ND fans down as gently as he can. Because it’s gonna be worse (next year) before it gets better.

I think that Kelly is the real deal. He’s had massive success wherever he went.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
i cant remember how good of a coach Lou Holtz actually was or if his NC was just cuz there were about 5 good teams back then but Brian Kelly looks to be the best out of the Davie, Willingham, Weis crew.

Much respect to Kelly, but....
ND’s problem wasn’t putting points on the board this year or not throwing the ball well, it was all about defense defense defense. I would have thought they would’ve gone with a defensive minded coach, but hey, I’m not Jack Swarbuck.
by SeattleDucks on Dec 11, 2009 11:44 AM PST up reply actions
Maybe… but I don’t think they developed their players very well. Clausen made some bad choices and awful throws when it came down to needing to make THE game winning play. He’s like the polar opposite of Masoli.
I think that comes down to coaching, and Weis not really knowing how to develop his players. ND should have beaten several teams this year, and kept coming up short because of offensive woes.

The goal of the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) is to provide the most scientifically rigorous conferments in college football. CFPA recognizes weekly, annual, and multi-season (career) award recipients – selected based upon objective scientific rankings of the extent to which individual players increase the overall effectiveness of their teams.
After an extensive review of the existing data, literature, and evidence, it was determined that you finished the 2009 season with the strongest freshman performance in Division I FBS college football. As a result, your performance satisfies the strict criteria CFPA established for annual recognition as a freshman performer.

Thanks, I’ve been in SoCal for 10 years, didn’t get tickets to the Rose Bowl, so I put together this video for fun. Then a friend came through and I got tickets (for cash), woot, can’t wait to watch them destroy OSU, not even going to be close. I’m going to watch the OSU vs Iowa game tape again soon where they beat them by 3pts in OT. Iowa, 3pts, OT, nuff said.
