Poll: The Heisman Trophy and the Most Outstanding Player in College Football
Going into the season, most pundits thought that Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford or Tim Tebow would run away with the Heisman Trophy this year. McCoy and Tebow will be making the trip to New York but they have a few unexpected names joining them. Many awards represent the "best" player in a particular category but the Heisman Trophy is different. College Football's most publicized award seeks to reward the "most outstanding player in collegiate football". It may not the be the best quarterback or the player who has the most potential at the next level. Given those conditions, we give you today's poll.

Suh and Gerhart were clearly the most dominant players in the country
but Ingram is going to win because the voters are idiots, and will prove that the Heisman is a total sham.

I don’t really care who wins the Heisman so long as it is not Tebow or McCoy.
Tebow doesn’t have the numbers and played in a pretty weak SEC (comparatively) this year.
McCoy was owned by Suh and looked awful in the Big 12 championship game. Even without that game, a lot of McCoy’s success can be attributed to his roomate Jordan Shipley who seemingly turned McCoy’s 10 yard slant passes into 90 yard TDs every play.
My ballot:
Suh
Ingram
Gerhart

there are plenty
1. Ingram rushed .75 yards more per carry
2. Ingram had twice as many receiving yards
by westspec on Dec 12, 2009 10:19 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
to expound on this point, Ingram plays for a team that hasn’t lost any games. Although that may be unfair, people take that into consideration. Also, a lot of people outside of the west coast still view Pac-10 defenses as “soft” whereas SEC defenses are viewed as “elite”.

he also had games of
56 yards, 50 yards, and 30 yards. the 30 yards was on 16 carries and in a big game. toby was strong all year long.

i agree
toby was strong all year. only twice under 100 (82, 96) and he was at his best in big games. the only thing stopping him from running away with it is they lost 4 games but so did nebraska.

You have to recall that he got injured during that game. And he made key runs and a key catch on the game winning TD drive. Clutch.

I will admit that I like Colt McCoy.
I have no reason to. However, I think he is a great quarterback who has been pretty much great this year. Despite his “awful” Big XII Championship game, I think he has earned at least the top two in the Heisman. Let’s be honest, Toby Gerhart is not going to win it, no matter how deserving we think he is.

I watched Toby This morning in a replay
On ESPNU destroy Notre Dame single handedly in the fourth quarter, and I just can’t see him not deserving it more than anyone. Ingram and Suh are both great, and I would give Suh the edge there, based on his value to the team as a whole. Ingram is NOT the star of the ’Bama team, their defense is. Toby Gerhart is the heart and soul of Stanford this season, everything hinges on him having success, to me that makes him the most outstanding player, not to mention all the stats back him up which helps.

If Suh doesn’t win, I think it makes the award even more meaningless. He’s the most talented and biggest contributor on any team in the country.
Even when other players on his team get a sack, it’s because he’s tying up 3 other blockers.
The losses Nebraska has made have nothing to do because of Suh.

I guess the debate between Ingram vs. Suh/Gerhart is winning teams...
Do you give the Heisman to the best player on the best team in the country? Or do you give to a guy like Gerhart or Suh who single-handedly won at least 2 games for them?
Me? I’m personally under the belief that you give it to the most outstanding college player who made the biggest impact to their team. Obviously, you can’t have a guy like Baylor’s Robert Griffin (when healthy) win the trophy when Baylor doesn’t go to a bowl. But watching Gerhart win his team games against us, USC and ND and Suh dominating the 2nd half of the Missorui-Nebraska game in a downpour makes you think one of those two is the most outstanding player in college this year. Basically, if either one of them wins I’ll be happy – if Ingram wins I won’t be surprised.

If McCoy wins=The Lifetime achievement Award.
If Ingram wins= The Best player on highest ranked team Award.
If Tebow wins= The I’m F’in Tim “F’in” Tebow Award.
If Suh wins= The Too Bad they Don’t Give These Things to Defensive Player More Often Award.
If Garheart=The Heisman Trophy

I just have a hard time seeing the argument that Gerhart deserves it more than Suh.
He’s statistics are far more impressive than Gerhart’s, and his contribution to the overall team outshines it. Nebraska without Suh is borderline laughable. Nebraska with Suh is a team that can compete against the most potent offenses.
Stanford without Gerhart still has Luck that likely has a great future ahead of him.

It’s not that Suh doesn’t deserve it, he does. To be nominated as a true defensive player is a big step, because they’ve never won the award. (I’m not counting Woodson with his special teams and offensive play.)

Let’s not forget, if the Nebraska offense was even competent, they’re a two-loss team, looking at a BCS bid.
They had the 88th ranked offense in college football. Their defense was ranked 4th, in large part due to Suh.

Gerhart
Statistical rankings for gerhart according to CFBstats.com
scoring: 1
rushing yards: 1
Touchdowns: 1
Yards/game: 2
Traditional Heisman winner: offensive player
With that said, if there was ever a year to give it to a defensive guy this is it
by QuackinAK on Dec 12, 2009 1:05 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Gerhart has been solid, no doubt. But he’s also a benefactor of a QB that showed great flashes.
Also, other statistical rankings he has had:
Rushing Attempts: 1st
Rushing Average: 75th (Wow! Heisman OMG!)
TDs aren’t an important statistic for RB, in my opinion. At least, not ones that are within 3 yards of the goal line. Any RB should be able to make that. Failure to do so is usually a result of bad blocking.

He played his best in many of OSU’s biggest games, scoring twice against USC and Arizona and four times against Stanford.
So a loss to four-loss USC is a bigger game than a subpar performance with the Pac-10 title on the line? Those big games he’s talking about, the Beavers were 1-2 in those games. That’s really poor evidence to Jacquizz’s value. OSU went 7-2 when Quizz wasn’t at his best. Why even play him?
My problem with the Quizz for Heisman push is that yes, he gets a lot of touches. But he really isn’t that spectacular. His YPC is pedestrian, 65th in the nation and 9th in the Pac-10. There is a lot to be said about the lack of fumbles, which is what impresses me the most about Quizz. But I’d rather have LMJ, Jahvid Best, Toby Gerhart, and maybe even Shane Vereen before Jacquizz.

How about this for a fix:
They gather 200 Sportswriters in a room. Make it incredibly hot, so they seem uncomfortable. Show the highlights, and maybe all of the candidates talking to each other. Then, the camera shows the 200 sportswriters, who then make their votes. This way, when some homer votes like an idiot, then everyone knows. If their is a tie, everyone votes between the two who tied. Not only is this a bit more exciting, but it also gets rid of voting before the season.

Hahahaha!!!
You think they would have prepared something earlier. Apparently not
Our collective lack of productivity has clearly paid off in the grandest of fashion. We are going to Pasadena. Yes, let that sink in. WE ARE GOING TO PASADENA. To be honest, this has not yet hit me-WE ARE GOING TO PASADENA. Wow.
Juju, We applaud your devotion and pure decency throughout the season.

This was a total embarrassment
Two outstanding candidates in Suh and Gerhart, and someone who pales in comparision to both won.

I'm pretty sure the reason Ingram won
…was because the voters were like “OMG SEC”

It was likely because the McCoy/Suh/Gerhart contingent split a lot of votes.
I don’t have huge issues with Ingram getting the award, he was the best player on the best team, whatever.
What is the big joke is that Suh ended up 4th, by a significant margin.

About the only people that voted for him were in the south west region.

Toby Gerhart is way more impressive when you’re fucked up. That is all.
