ATQ Awards 2009: The "Amanda" Award Nominations
2009 is nearly behind us, another great year of ATQ has passed. The community is what makes this blog so special. Where would we be without the readers and contributors responsible for all the wonderful insights, comments, complaints, paranoia and angst...especially the angst! During the next few weeks, we will be offering up a series called The ATQ Awards 2009, a series designed to highlight some of the most memorable and inspirational events of this past year on Addicted to Quack.
The second category is what we are calling the "Amanda Award". This special honor is given to a current female athlete, associated with the University of Oregon, that you just love, possibly for no good reason. Give your nominations in this thread.
This award is a "Community Choice" award, meaning your votes will ultimately decide the winner. Once nominations are closed, we’ll have a vote to decide the outcome.

Sonja Newcombe. There should be no other arguments.
It's spelled "T-H-E-I-M-P-A-C-T"
I support inroywetrust in his support of The VD Special in his support of me supporting Roger Kieschnick in his quest to becoming the best Kieschnick ever to play professional baseball.
Anna Poponyak is my argument and it’s a good one

If we can consider athletic vs athlete
then, how about Katelynn Johnson who took the water bottle to the head in AZ.
cheerleaders are athletes. Anyone that tells you otherwise hasn’t been beat up by one

I know a lot of folks don’t consider racecar drivers athletes. Driving those types of vehicles takes endurance, vision, cat-like reflexes, strength, decision-making among other attributes. To answer your question, in my opinion, Danica Patrick is unquestionably an athlete.

You haven't been listening to Dan Patrick lately.
They were discussing this topic and felt if an event didn’t include a ball, then it was simply an activity and the participants athletic vs athletes.
Wonder how Michael Phelps, Usian Bolen, et al fit into this narrow minded approach.
Wow,
You would have to be incredibly ignorant to say something along the lines of what Dan Patrick said. Unbelievable
Juju, you have already blessed the Duck masses by diverting Terrelle Pryor to Columbus Ohio; and in the process granted us one magical Masoli who happens to be "sicker than E-Coli (I know from experience with E-Coli, Masoli must be pretty damn sick)". We are all mutually gracious for this blessing. However, in our time of dearest need, we request that one Terrelle Pryor succumb to your overwhelming collegiate football dictation skillz.

Ugh
Drivers are not athletes. Those same attributes apply to pilots, are they athletes? They are incredibly skilled and can be athletic people, but racing cars is not an athletic sport. It’s just skilled competition. I’m with Dan Patrick.

Pilots can be athletes. Air Racing is a great example. If you are referring to commercial pilots, it would be hard to say that they are participating in something competitive.
Dictionary.com definition of a sport – an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
auto racing is athletic? Yes
auto racing requires physical prowess? Yes
auto racing is competitive in nature? Yes.
It’s called “Motor Sports” for a reason.

How can it be a sport, when the more you drink, the better you get?

Really? They aren't?
F1 Racecar drivers have to withstand 150 degree temperatures for over two hours at a time. They have to maintain extended periods of 198 bpm. G-forces encountered in racing are extreme, and require massive strength to overcome these forces; their necks alone grow by more than an inch through the course of the season due to the G’s. These drivers are actually some of the most fit and athletic people on earth.

He’s not saying they aren’t athletic people. He’s saying racing isn’t a sport. And I agree. It’s a skill activity.

Racing is most definitely a sport,
What do you consider a sport? I tend to consider sports to be competition between talented and athletic individuals.

I’m jut prejudiced against racing. It’s totally irrational, and there are plenty of good arguments for it being a sport. But it’s not. I think racing, where winning has as much to do with how good your car is as how good a driver you are, isn’t really a sport. It’s like if some NBA teams got to play in Hyperdunks while others can use Chuck Taylors. Sure, the Chuck Taylor team can win, but it’s a competitive disadvantage. If you put Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, or Mark Martin in Jimmie Johnson’s car, then they are four-time Sprint Cup champs.

Success in car racing has as much to do with putting your foot on the gas, balls to nudge other drivers as anything. I think you could put a 300 lb guy behind the wheel (non athlete) that could do well in a stock car.
You could not do the same with basketball, football, baseball, etc. Everyone is skilled.
is this a sport?

Focus people, we are giving out an award here.

Isn’t there a girl on the volleyball team with the last name of Ironmonger or something equally badass? I vote for that girl based on her name alone.
Ellyce Ironmonger plays for the basketball team. Close!

Is it strange to vote for Amanda even though the award is named after her?
Oh well, my vote is Amanda P. regardless. Yes I know the policy, comment about Amanda and you are required to post a pic. So…
