Quack Fix: Ducks prepare for Rose Bowl in LA
I hope everyone had a great holiday. After a long break, it's time to focus on the Rose Bowl. There are a ton of links out there, so lets get to it.
- The Register Guard had a 20 page preview of the Rose Bowl over the weekend. Most of the pieces can be found here. I didn't get to read them all, but they should keep you busy for a few hours.
- Looking at the matchups for this game, I really think it's gonna come down to the play of the Oregon defense, and it sounds like Nick Aliotti is ready. Aliotti has taken more criticism than he deserves, but he's proved all the doubters wrong this season, with a defense that is (according to good metrics) tops in the Pac-10, and this defense is the real reason the Ducks are headed to the Rose Bowl. Moseley has a few more notes on how the Ducks are preparing for Pryor and the OSU run defense.
- Rob Moseley also has a piece on the recruiting year that laid the groundwork for this season, the 2007 recruiting class. It was one of the best in Oregon history with DJ Davis, Jeff Maehl, Will Tukuafu, and many others.
- George Schroeder has a column on Chip Kelly, Urban Meyer, and coaching college football. While Meyer will be coming back, his health problems could happen to any coach, due to the stress and speed of the job. However, most coaches can't slow down, Kelly included.
- Schroeder also had a piece on Mike Bellotti, and how he was the bridge between the Rose Bowls. That's a bit unfair, he did win an outright Pac-10 title in 2001. But Bellotti stepped down when everything was there for the taking. That doesn't happen often in college football.
- If you're gonna be down in Pasadena for the Rose Bowl, here's a list of fan events.
- Lastly, in a little non-Rose Bowl news, the men's basketball team plays their last non-conference game tonight against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Yes, they're a real school. They have not won a game this season.
That's all for now, as always, leave any other links or comments below. After the jump are a few videos of the Ducks and their visit to Disneyland.

Masoli seems to be having fun
but Jordan is just sitting there with his hands in his lap like he’s unimpressed

Yeah,
He is most likely similar to myself in the sense that he prefers Six Flags rides MUCH more
Juju, you have already blessed the Duck masses by diverting Terrelle Pryor to Columbus Ohio; and in the process granted us one magical Masoli who happens to be "sicker than E-Coli (I know from experience with E-Coli, Masoli must be pretty damn sick)". We are all mutually gracious for this blessing. However, in our time of dearest need, we request that one Terrelle Pryor succumb to your overwhelming collegiate football dictation skillz.
Your very own Humble servant,
CaDuck
I think he is thinking, “Am I too big to be on this ride?” “Do they test these things for guys my size?” “I think I need to get off of this”
LET CH3 RETURN KICKS!!!!
Looks to me like.
I’m the Center, Jeremiah should be behind me!
"When LaMichael James decides he's going North. The foot goes in the ground and it's 0 to 60 now!" Jesse Palmer.
With a victory tonight, the men’s basketball team will be 8-4, equaling their win total from last year. Great way to start Pac-10 play if the Ducks can get a win. Would be tough to argue with a 4 game winning streak.

Autzen Stadium is where great teams go to die." - J. Brady McCullough, The Michigan Daily.
We should win handily
By at least 25 points, and I’m not joking, Pine Bluff is that bad.

From the Rose Bowl Press Conference, for the defense. From Casey Matthews:
They watched our film so they probably think they can do that and pound the ball at us but we learned a lot in the week after (the Stanford) game. We cleaned up a few things.
--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog
considering that's one of the staples to our offense...
i’m sure we’ll try! i’m excited to see this match up. everyone talks about the oregon offense vs the bucks defense, but i’m excited to see the other side of it.
As has been noted, the key to beating Oregon
Is matching it with a decent downfield pass game. If you don’t, sooner or later we’ll simply shut you down (we did it to USC and Cal) by throwing all the bodies at the RBs.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
you're absolutely right skywaker9
if pryor can’t move the ball through the air, our chances of victory are highly, highly reduced.
I thought the key to beating us was winning time of possession?
Wait…That’s only happened twice.
Many can try to imitate, but there can be only one...Masoli.
Paysinger mentioned the spilt crowd at the rose bowl...
it’s gonna be one of the coolest scenes this bowl season. i’m so jacked. 4 days…
I remember the split crowd at the Fiesta in 2002
Half green and gold for Oregon, half black and brown for Colorado, very cool looking.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Pryor just said on ESPN
That he has been playing with a partial PCL tear in his knee all year. You know what do Ward and Paysinger, right?
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
If I remember correctly… that ligament really only helps with jumping. He’ll still be a threat cutting and sprinting.

Still, it might make him tentative
And our boys will knock him hard (legally) a few times I’m sure.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
he hasn't been playing with this injury all year...
he most likely hurt it on haloween during the new mexico state game. tressel/ohio state is infamous for not divulging the full extent of injuries (ex — we still don’t know what the hell happened to beanie’s foot last year) so i’m not surprised. just a lil’ frustrated.
We know about knee injuries
Dixon played with an ACL injury in the infamous Zona game two years back.
And Chip Kelly hardly reveals injuries either, unless a player is clearly out for a while (crutches or a cast), he always says they are “Day to Day”.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
ACL injuries are much more severe than partial tears to the PCL
i remember watching that oregon zona, game, and watching dixons knee buckle. freaking gross.
ACL tear happened to me...
Totally irrelevant, but it hurt.
Many can try to imitate, but there can be only one...Masoli.
Troy Polamalu has been out most of the year for the Steelers with a PCL sprain (not tear). It does limit mobility some (not nearly as severe as the ACL) the only problem is the only way to fix it is thru rest (if I remember right, I think this is what Masoli had earlier this year also).
If Pryor has been playing with it all year, and has now been “resting” for the last month, I would be surprised if it effected him at all in the RB
LET CH3 RETURN KICKS!!!!
Masoli didn't have a tear though
He had a knee bruise IIRC, which isn’t as bad.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
I remember Canzano saying that he had a decimated ACL,
So you are clearly wrong.
Anatidaephobia-Fear that a Duck is watching you. Pryor, come January 1st, there will be millions watching you. We are banking on your overwhelming football prowess, blessed Juju.
Canazano can suck my (expletive0
Juju forgive me for hating on Canzano.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Exactly. Couldnt have said it better myself.
Oh, I assure you, Juju loves basing on Canzano. Especially when it is unwarranted!
Anatidaephobia-Fear that a Duck is watching you. Pryor, come January 1st, there will be millions watching you. We are banking on your overwhelming football prowess, blessed Juju.
yeah -- i'm pretty sure it happened during the new mexico state game...
again, could be wrong considering ohio state’s history of not revealing injuries, but that’s when people in buckeye nation started noticing his running was different (shorter strides).
Oddly enough, Masoli's injury was also during our easiest game
Of the year, Washington State.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
strange parallel here, for sure...
did your starting place kicker also suffer a knee injury in that game? cause if he did, that’d be crazy!
Nope
Morgan Flint doesn’t get hurt, mostly because he doesn’t do kickoffs, only XPs and FGs.
"Good evening Blazer fans, wherever you may be!"-Bill Schonely
Nathan Villegas did, though, in like 1999.

So, you’re sayin’ there’s a chance??
those who do not remember history should read my blog...
Well,
This is as close to a guaranteed victory as possible. At least there will be some “mo” going into the conference season with a few wins in a row.
Anatidaephobia-Fear that a Duck is watching you. Pryor, come January 1st, there will be millions watching you. We are banking on your overwhelming football prowess, blessed Juju.
"Mo"?
More like a “dead cat bounce”, I fear.

I am trying to be positive here...
C’mon

4 wins in a row isn’t a bad streak at all, especially with a win against Oakland… a team that has had our number in recent years and wasn’t exactly a cupcake. I’ll take 8-4 going into the conference season, especially since we’re opening against the Washington schools.

It’d be more encouraging if we hadn’t been killed by Mizzou and lost to a team from Montana. That sais, it could be a lot worse.

Nice that we aren’t having this sort of discussion about any part of the Duck’s game:
Time to perform: Days of Pryor growing into QB job are running short
see comments… ouch.
Wow...
The vast majority of people commenting on that article are anything but supportive of Terrelle Pryor.
There are also a few Duck fans commenting there that tarnish our reputation!

Yep
That discussion isn’t about us. No need to get involved…. like sticking your hands into a dog fight.

That article brings up an interesting thought:
Which team has more pressure on them in the Rose Bowl?
Oregon hasn’t won one in how many years? USC has dominated the PAC 10 for a decade and Oregon was only able to win it because they had a down year. Coach Kelly and Oregon should be hapy to just be there. PAC 10 defenses aren’t very good, and no one will be surprised if anOSU runs all over them.
or
Terrelle Pryor needs to step up and be the QB of the future for anOSU. Tressel can’t win the big one anymore with his conservative gameplans. The Big 10 really isn’t that good and lives off of old stereotypical hype.
Personally, I think it’s anOSU with the pressure to win, but I don’t want to have to listen to UW fans talk about Rose Bowl victories ever again… I guess what I am saying is PANIC!!!!!!
LET CH3 RETURN KICKS!!!!
does anyone know if the game's radio broadcast will be online somewhere (not ozone)
The beloved creator of Sandwich music.
actually
being the national game, I’d bet its on ESPN radio. try espnradio.com

Off to Mexico til after the Rose Bowl
So I’ll be off ATQ but WILL of course be watching the game via Satellite TV from my friend’s condo in Puerto Vallarta (who are also Ducks fans).
GO DUCKS!

Okay, let me get this straight.
Us Ducks have now spread through Canada, France, India, and now Mexico? Nice work

They are from Portland
And retired/live there in the winter, so not really spread to Mexico.
You did forget Vietnam though, we have at least one logging in from Vietnam regularly.

I knew I forgot one...
I had no idea abut Germany

I'm really late to this string, it seems, but I hate this idea hinted at that Belotti was a lull between successes.
What a sad, public perception based and easily marketable catch phrase definition of success.
Dude added at least one win each season to the UO record between ’97 and ’01 and had an outright Pac-10 championship and one loss season that would have been a Rose Bowl in any other year. That same season he had a #2 consensus national finish. Even if we win the Rose Bowl this year:
Belotti had the most successful year in our entire history, period, while building us into the expectations we have today.
So I guess it’s an easy TV story to say he didn’t make it to the Rose Bowl, but jeez, what a lazy bullshit message. Best season in our history, #2 national finish = the reality.

Bellotti should have a statue at Autzen as far as I'm concerned.
And anybody who’s watched Ducks football for the past 20 years should tell you exactly the same thing. We were, in historical terms, a fluke when we made the Rose Bowl in ’95.
This year, we were considered overdue for the Rose Bowl.
Bellotti put the capital P in our Program.

He really does deserve something in his honor.
Brooks laid a foundation, and Belotti turned the foundation into a consistently great program for the first time.
