Saturday Football Open Thread

I figured most of us are still trying to recover from our late Thursday drinking fests... But, I wanted somewhere to talk about Saturday Championship games, so I"ll create my own.   Before we talk about the games, I'll relay 2 funny stories from Friday.

Star-divide

First, I live on a street surrounded by Beaver fans.  To the right, behind, across the street, and my only duck fan neighbors lived to the left of me, but they moved earlier this year and guess who moved in... yep more Beaver fans.

Now I display my Oregon ducks flag in front with pride, but after Boise this year, I was afraid to rake my leaves, cause I would get accosted with "how about Blount?" comments (in all seriousness, my neighbors are awesome people and were really cool about the whole season).  That didn't mean I wasn't going to take the time to rub this win in a little.  So after about 8 Jujubleales and 37 Oregon points later, my buddy and I decided to make it so that not only my neighbors, but all Beaver fans when they drove by my house, had to see a little reminder of who I support:

Img00017-20091205-0922_medium

I think the Hydrant looks a lot better now, how about you?

Next story I related in a comment.  My daughter told me on Thursday after school that her teacher and a lot of teachers at her school were Beaver fans. So much so, that she was the only girl in her class rooting for the ducks and had to hear all day about how the Beavers were going to beat the ducks.  She was really excited to watch the game with me.

So Friday, I sent her yellow roses to her classroom with a note that said, hand these out to teachers… personally, I'm not expecting the next parent teacher conference to go very well.

Finally, on to Saturday games.  Here's who I think is going to win:

Cinci

Florida

Texas

Houston

WVA

GA Tech

Arizona

Wow.

By my count, Pitt has given Lewis the ball 19 times. IN THE FIRST QUARTER. 17 rushes, 2 catches.

They are going to kill this kid someday

Our collective lack of productivity has clearly paid off in the grandest of fashion. We are going to Pasadena. Yes, let that sink in. WE ARE GOING TO PASADENA. To be honest, this has not yet hit me-WE ARE GOING TO PASADENA. Wow.

Yeah...

Very unheralded as a recruit. Pitt is sure lucky they wont play again until late December sometime (thats right, Cincy will win!); or else he would be decimated after a 50 touch game!

My sense is that the BIg East is getting only 1 team in any case—if Cincy loses, no BCS bowl for them. Boise probably has an equally big fan base as Cincy and probably more national exposure.

Fun Fact about the Sagarin rankings

Pitt (#16) is the only team in the top 25 who has not yet played someone else who’s currently in the top 30 (before today).

The next-highest team with such a distinction is I-AA school #55 William and Mary.

The next-highest I-A school with this distinction is #67 Southern Miss.

I was thinking about Canfield yesterday after the Civil War

Anyone else think that guy has a chance in the NFL. He throws a sweet ball, accurate with zip. He’s tall and has decent size. I know he can’t scramble worth a damn, but he has a good arm. Only thing I haven’t seen him do a lot of is throw the deep ball. Am I crazy for thinking this?

that’s what made me think of it. (BTW, how crazy is it to think now that Anderson was in the Pro Bowl.. THE PRO BOWL, what has happended to him?)

Anderson at least had some scrambling ability. Canfield makes Kosar look like Masoli (did you see him trip over that yard line?). But Canfield looks 10x more accurate of a thrower.

Florida is also very poor in passing offense.

Tebow has an incredibly slow release and brings the ball down very low before he passes. Not to mention the Florida’s receiving corps is only decent this season.

Keep Tebow contained in the pocket an Alabama will win by more than 14.

WIDE OPEN reciever.

It was funny because the announcer tried to give Tebow all of the credit for that, it was just a 5 yard pitch and catch to a wide open man.

Thats frustrating…Tebow “Hmmm, I could really use a wide open man right about now, ahh, there he is”

Our collective lack of productivity has clearly paid off in the grandest of fashion. We are going to Pasadena. Yes, let that sink in. WE ARE GOING TO PASADENA. To be honest, this has not yet hit me-WE ARE GOING TO PASADENA. Wow.

Juju, We applaud your devotion and pure decency throughout the season.

SEC is like that super hot girl that ends up being horrible in the sack.

When you know that other girl (Pac 10) might not be so great looking (To the East coast). Buts ends up being a firecracker and one you will never forget.

No one shall mention the season that shall not be named.

Hmm, I wonder what the reason is that one is in the Heisman race and one isn’t?

Watching Florida, I realized how awesome Masoli is at really sticking the ball in the RB’s stomach. Tebow just kindof puts the ball in front of his body, I never have to guess who has the ball.

Why does Arizona get the Holiday Bowl automatically instead of the Beavers? If Cal beats the fuskies, the standings look like this:

Oregon: 8-1, 10-2
Arizona: 6-3, 8-4
Beavers: 6-3, 8-4
Stanford: 6-3, 8-4
Cal: 6-3, 8-4
USC: 5-4, 8-4

The 4 teams tied for 2nd place all beat each other. None of the 4 teams was undefeated against each other. My understanding is that the Holiday Bowl is free to select any of the #2 teams when there is a tie. Can someone provide me a reference that shows that the Holiday Bowl is obligated to use some tiebreaker? It seems that people are just assuming that the Holiday Bowl would take the winner of the USC/Az game, but with USC losing I don’t see why Arizona is any more attractive to them than the Beavers.

There was a press release saying the Holiday Bowl is taking the winner of that game. Also, Arizona is way closer to San Diego and will sell way more tickets.

Do you have that press release? This article seems to say differently. It also confirms my statement that there is no tiebreaker for the Holiday Bowl. They can take who they want.

A 15-member committee will meet Dec. 6 and debate the merits of each team. A majority vote determines who they pick.
“That’s when we have a big decision with who we pick,” Siebrand said. “I personally prefer Oregon State. They haven’t been here before. There is a sentiment for Oregon State. If there’s a tie they look pretty good.”
