This is a must-read article from former Duck player Ken Woody to Oregon State coach Mike Riley and his team. I know that not all Duck fans will feel the way Ken expresses in this article, but I certainly do. FYI, there may be some controversial comments about overrated chants. Feel free to ignore those Gorby

A piece from a former Oregon Duck player talking about respect for Oregon State after their play in the Civil War. For a lot of fans, Oregon State has been seen as an inferior program or “little brother” or what have you. This is a take where a former player gained a lot of respect for the OSU program, effectively calling them a worthy competitor. In the nature of the rivalry, where Beaver fans rail against Oregon’s arrogance, this piece is a nice counterpoint to that.

Totally agree. How is this NOT relevant? I feel exactly the same way. Both programs are awesome. I still don’t get why people on both sides feel they need to put the other down to boost their own ego. Talk about how great your team is, not how bad the other team sucks. Thanks for posting this Dom.

It may just be my personal feelings about OSU, but the little brother epithet has always been, to me, about their fan base and how they conduct themselves. They act like little brothers who don’t think mom and dad love them as much as their more handsome, if only slightly more successful, older brother. That’s how I’ve always taken it, that’s all.

Yes. I like the Beavers football team. It’s their fans that suck (majority, not all of them).

Asking why this is relevant is exactly why OSU fans don't like the Ducks

Though, as an OSU fan, I agree with the sentiments expressed here about our fan’s believing that everyone sees us as inferior to UO. Obviously, a lot of that comes with being terrible for two and a half decades, fighting so hard to get back into relevance, but still not making it over the hump and having a huge season (2000 was amazing, but we haven’t been great since) . And, as much as I hear Duck fans spewing “respect” at OSU now, I very much doubt that that was the case after last years CW. So, I do share at least a little bit of our fanbase’s irritation, because there is some truth to it, but I hate it as much a you guys do when our fans become asshats about it.

Every time I hear an OSU fan go on about Phil Knight paying the refs or bribing other teams to lose, I roll my eyes and tell them they’re being an idiot. Though most of us would never admit it, deep down OSU fans are kind of jealous of everything UO has. We’d flip a shit if we had a donor willing to spend hundreds of millions on our sports programs or promote us as much as the Ducks are.

I don’t know, just some thoughts from the other side.

Thank you for admitting this.

OSU and Riley already had my respect

They just showed why on Thursday. Riley is a class act, and runs the OSU program as such. The Rodgers brothers are the real deal and provide Oregon (the school and the state) with a reason to “hate”, fear, and respect them now and for years to come. Canfield played like a man and proved to me that he deserves a shot in the NFL.

I appreciate Ken’s words and hopefully it will bring many Oregon State “haters” over to the side of respect for the tremendous program that is being nurtured just north of Eugene. Thanks for pointing this article out Dom.

I LaLove my Ducks. Best way to start a new decade imaginable... Oregon in the Rose Bowl January 1st!!!!!

The state of Oregon is big enough for two nations: the Beavers and the Ducks

Similar to how the ocean is big enough for great whites, and the little fishies that they eat.

It's great to own the state...

.. but the downside of ownership is, you have to put up with renters.

Interesting take

I certainly respect the OSU program. They’ve done a great job with limited resources. Riley is a fantastic coach. They played a GREAT game Thursday night and deserve to be lauded for that.

All that said, sports are entertainment. I have no problem with fun being had in the name of disparaging an opponent or its fans, as long as it’s in good taste and doesn’t cross the proverbial line. I’ll applaud an opponent after the game for a game-well played (in most cases), but it’s just not fun to clap for the team beforehand. And I’m there for fun.

Cheer your team, boo the other team, chant over-rated, whatever. Just have fun without being stupid. Real sports fans will recognize good performances, even when they’re by the opponent.

Oh, by the way, Ken Woody?

O-VER-RA-TED

Just kidding. It was a very well-written piece, and I love his Xs and Os stuff. I just didn’t happen to agree with everything he put in this one.

i liked the article

but more because im a strength of schedule believer and northwest guy than a beaver admirer. yes they played great. but we still won! and before we give the orange haired little step brothers any more respect go over to ducksportsnews and read the article about the idiots who spray painted a live mallard duck orange. it can’t swim now and is going to spend the winter at the humane society. real classy fellas. two thumbs down!

Ya, no disrespect for Mr. Woody...

and I root for the Beavs every other week. I just thought the letter was maybe a bit out of touch. I never make my support of the Ducks a personal attack on anyone but I definately like to add to the atmospere of Autzen. I understand that people want to the crowd to respect the other team and all, I just think that a huge reason for the sucess of the Duck football program has been the noise and insanity at Autzen. We all know how big an advantage we have at Autzen. You really can’t have it both ways.

Go Ducks!

ZZZZZ

Boring read…and arrogant too. It’s a sort of veiled, condescending jab at OSU. Would he have written the same thing if the Ducks lost? And an open letter to the coach? As if Riley doesn’t know that? Why not just write it as a simple, direct post.
