BCS Selection Day/ Bowl Chatter Open Thread

In case anyone else is home and glued to the TV today, friggin' chat about it!  Plus, we can giggle about this:

SAN FRANCISCO -- Southern California will face Boston College in the Emerald Bowl.

The bowl announced that the Trojans (8-4) will play the Eagles (8-4) on Dec. 26 at AT&T Park in San Francisco. This marks the first time USC has played in the bowl. The Trojans had played in a BCS game the past seven years.

Boston College is making its 11th straight bowl appearance. The Eagles are the first team to play in the Emerald Bowl twice, beating Colorado State 35-21 in 2003. Boston College is 8-1 in bowl games this decade.

The Trojans dropped three of their last five games, including Saturday's 21-17 loss to Arizona. USC dropped out of the AP Top 25 for the first time in eight years after the loss to Wildcats.

Hee hee hee....fantastic.  Also, Stanford has accepted an invite to the Sun Bowl to play Oklahoma.  Should be fun to watch Touchdown Toby run all over another Big Choke Bob.

First time SC hasn't been ranked in 8 years.

Something like 130 polls.

So.. unranked in the last regular season poll, probably unranked in the final poll (but you never know), but they’ll be in the top 15 — maybe the top 10 — preseason next year. Bank that.

Juju story from the Civil War that I totally forgot. I was wearing my Blount jersey the whole first half. After halftime, the Beavers came out and scored. My wife says, “we need more defense.” I put my Chung jersey on over the top of the Blount jersey, and what do you know? No more points for the Beavers. I should have just done that in the 1st half so we could have covered the spread.

I hate it

Not only a rematch, but both the “little” teams are denied a shot at the big dogs. Now nobody will ever know if those undefeated teams could really stand up with the BCS like Utah vs. Bama last year.

Now Boise gets their paycheck but they won’t get to say they beat a “real” team (Florida, Ohio State, etc.) even if they do pull off the win.

Other than the Rose Bowl I think this year looks to be an absolute yawner. I think Charlie Wiess got a new gig picking bowl matchups!

The ref definitely said “The previous play is under further review” and got on the headset

Ultimately, I think it’s a matter of what you consider the “right” call. If a call was incorrect but that play type is not reviewable, what is the proper course of action?

by AllSaintsDay on Dec 6, 2009 4:22 PM PST up reply actions

The play was reviewable. You can review the time left on the clock, esp. at the end of a play. How easily we forget, considering this happened in the UW play at the end of the half.

It was the right call. It was the right review.

By the rules, it is not. There is a list of reviewable plays. It lists adjusting the time if something is overturned, like “The runner stepped out of bounds after all, so we’re setting the clock to that time.” It does not make any other reference to clock reviews, unless they’re egregious (the example given is a minute difference).

by AllSaintsDay on Dec 6, 2009 4:52 PM PST up reply actions

Source?

Maybe you’re reading the rules wrong, and maybe the ref misstated by saying the “play is under review” but the play wasn’t under review, the clock was. And there is a lot more leeway in that.

In the approved rulings for replay, they talk about resetting the clock if it’s run for a minute from a touchback to the ensuing first down. That’s pretty clear evidence that they consider clock adjustments to be under the purview of replay.

Timing errors on the game clock may be corrected but shall be corrected only in the period in which they occur.

Depends on when you’re talking about it. In LSU’s case, I don’t think so, because they had no way to stop the clock, and it was never a true dead ball, when they stupidly tried to spike it.

--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog

by jtlight on Dec 6, 2009 10:32 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, but the receiver for LSU was down with about 0:03 left on the clock, which would have left enough time to at least snap it after the ball was set.

I’m sure there was. They frequently let a second or two fall off the clock in those situations.

However, I don’t really see that they could stop the clock for re-setting in that type of situation. A decent comparison would be the end of the 1st half of the UW game, where UW got the first down, and they put one second back on the clock. However, in that situation, UW had a timeout.

It’s totally unfair to Ole Miss in that situation to stop and check the clock and essentially give LSU an extra time out.

So, as Oregon fans, who do we want to lose so we can move up?

Texas loses, Boise loses, Florida loses, and the Orange is a wash in this situation

So if we win the Rose, we can only move up to 5? What?

This will at least equal a high preseason ranking next year.

BTW, College Football doesn't need a playoff, it needs to get rid of the human polls.

That’s what kept a definitely overrated Florida at 1 this year, because they looked at last year’s season.

Mark May was talking about how since they have Terrel Pryor, they can simulate our offense in practice. I’d argue that since we have Darron Thomas, we can emulate THEIR offense much better. DT is quite possibly better than Pryor, and can certainly practice as him.

“…we _want _to win” is MUCH different than “…we are going to win”.

"We’re going to finish this thing the right way and that’s what those guys know…we’re not just happy to be in a bowl game, we’re going (there) to win the bowl game."

Hopefully there’s a video of it somewhere to clear things up. I’m done searching for now.

He said that either in an interview or a press conference right after the Civil War. And I took it simply as, “We’re not just happy to be there. We’re going to play to win.” It’s not guaranteeing a victory at all, at least not the way I read it.

The word “going” in that sentence should be read as “traveling to the Rose Bowl” not as a future guarantee.
