Quack Fix: Ducks hand out season awards, look forward to tOSU, Volleyball falls in NCAA 2nd round

The end of the regular season of college football is always bittersweet, with that magical time coming to an end. But we have something pretty great to look forward to: The Rose Bowl!

  • Oregon handed out their team awards at a banquet yesterday. Jeremiah Masoli and LaMichael James shared the award for Mose Outstanding Player, while Will Tukuafu and Walter Thurmond III shared the award for most inspirational. There were a number of other awards handed out and Moseley has some more stories from the event. I'm hoping to see some video of Coach Frost razzing Jeff Maehl.
  • Yet the celebration will not last long. The Ducks are already looking forward to the matchup with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Kelly has already been watching films of the Big 10 champs, who have the best defense the Ducks have seen this season. However, Kelly does not seem too worried. The Ducks have the versatility on offense to create mismatches all over the field, and have been incredibly successful isolating those all season long.
  • Meanwhile, Jim Tressel is looking at the Ducks as well, and the focal point defensively will be Jeremiah Masoli, whom Tressel described as "scary." He also stated the the Buckeyes will need to "get in shape" after seeing the quick pace of Oregon's offense. I think the Buckeyes will have problems keeping pace with Oregon over 4 quarters, just as almost every other team has this season.
  • Lastly, though this is old, for those of you that may have forgotten about when OSU played USC: This is why I am not worried about the OSU offense. I'm very much excited for the Chip Kelly/Jim Tressel coaching matchup.
  • In other sports news, while we had let some time pass without mentioning Oregon volleyball, they made it to the NCAA tournament, and won a match versus Clemson before falling to the 13th ranked Kentucky Wildcats. It was a great season for the Ducks, who were ranked in the top 25 for nearly the entire season.

After the jump, we have another edition of Inside the Pac, breaking down the Civil War. As always, leave any other Duck news below. GO DUCKS!

Hmmm,

If Pete Carroll could stay a step ahead of Tressel when they played….And Coach Kelly was at least two steps ahead of Carroll when they played…

By my count, Kelly is already a minimum of three steps ahead of the tOSU coaches.

I cannot wait for this coaching matchup; I do feel that Coach Kelly will be able to exploit the tOSU defense faster than Tressel can adjust them.

Our collective lack of productivity has clearly paid off in the grandest of fashion. We are going to Pasadena. Yes, let that sink in. WE ARE GOING TO PASADENA. To be honest, this has not yet hit me-WE ARE GOING TO PASADENA. Wow.

Pryor

I wonder if Pryor regrets having chosen the Buckeyes over the Ducks. If he doesn’t yet, he will soon. Tressel doesn’t know how to use a talent like that. Turns out we didn’t need Pryor, but at least he wouldn’t have been completely wasted in an offense that refuses to adjust to his skills.

by IslanderDuck on Dec 7, 2009 7:45 AM PST reply actions

let me preface this by saying i am an ohio state fan, but i'm not a troll...

i would slightly disagree with you, IslanderDuck. pryor was asked that question — whether he regretted coming to ohio state, and he said no, he thinks he made the right choice. tressel does know how to use his talent, his abilities, and ohio state has been doing that the last five games.

in the middle of the season, pryor was a turnover machine. tressel, seeing that, established a more ‘running-based’ attack for pryor, and he has succeeded in this system (which, in a nutshell, was our coaching staff adjusting to his abilities). you can’t say he’s been ‘completely wasted’ in our offense.

if you compare masoli to pryor, masoli only has 190 more total yards (rushing and passing) than pryor this season. masoli only has a slight edge on pryor in total touchdowns as well, pryor has 23, masoli has 27.

basically, i disagree with everything you said, lol, but that’s just my opinion. pryor is only a sophpmore — he’s only going to get better.

Here’s the big difference between the Oregon offense and the OSU offense: Passing Downs.

Oregon ranks 19th in the country with an S&P+ of 132.3 (32% better than the national average)
OSU ranked 72nd in the country with an S&P+ of 98.3 (1.7% worse than the national average)

What you’ve just said basically backs this point: Terrelle Pryor has not been good when the game is put on his shoulders. I’m fairly certain the Ducks defense will have the gameplan, and physical ability, to force him into that situation.

by jtlight on Dec 7, 2009 8:53 AM PST up reply actions

that's exactly what iowa and penn state tried to do...

but it’s hard to force the game on pryor’s shoulders when the coaching staff has created a playbook that takes the game off of his shoulders.

i’m not saying that we’re gonna beat you guys the way we did them, we will have to play our absolute best to come out with a W, but our coaching staff isn’t moronic. they’ve seen pryor’s struggles, so they’ve gone with a gameplan of solid defense and a solid running game to produce W’s.

by davereg412 on Dec 7, 2009 8:58 AM PST up reply actions

Well, based on how the Duck defense is set up, I have plenty of faith that OSU will get in many situations where Pryor will have to make plays. I think that the defense of the Ducks will surprise a lot of people.

davereg412 thanks for posting, look forward to a lot of good conversation with OhSt fans...

but I think you are off a little. IslanderDuck may have used too many extreme statements like “completely” or “doesn’t know how” but I think his sentiment is correct.

Tressel’s offense was not and is not built to amplify Pryor’s skills and abilities, but to limit his mistakes. How can you have an exceptional athlete at QB with that much talent and you have to rebuild the entire game plan to limit them?

Of course I don’t think Pryor is going to say, “yes, I regret coming here”… that would be foolish. But when you look at how Kelly already uses his QB’s and how Tressel to date has used his, I think we can intellectually come to the conclusion that he would have been much better off statistically coming to Oregon.

Anyway, thanks again for the post.

but here's where we'll disagree...

pryor wanted to go to a school where he’d learn to be a better passer. he wants to be a composed and compitent quarterback who has the threat of running, not a quarterback who operates a spread system. that’s why he chose ohio state.

if you look at the offensive sets that oh state ran the first half of the season — they were running plays where he’d have to go through his reads and deliver the ball. he apperently wasn’t ready for this yet — at the first sign of trouble, he would lob the ball up to his ‘deep’ receiver option, and most of the time, he was picked off.

his footwork and throwing mechanics have improved slightly, it’s just his mental game that needs some work. terrelle pryor wants to be a quicker, stronger, taller version of heisman winner troy smith. whether he becomes that, or whether tressel can get him there, remains to be seen. but that’s what he wanted, and he has two years to get there…

by davereg412 on Dec 7, 2009 10:28 AM PST up reply actions

They were running plays where he’d have to go through his reads and deliver the ball

To me, this is a sign of poor coaching. Pryor has no been a starter for almost two years. He should be able to make those decisions. If you look at his ability to pass the ball and make those decisions, there is simply no comparison between him and Jeremiah Masoli. What makes Oregon’s offense really go is his ability to pass the ball and make the correct decisions. Pryor has simply not developed that yet.

I live in Chicago, so I see a lot of Big 10 football, and I am simply not impressed with Pryor. He has shown very little development as a passer. The fact that he’s a near two year starter and still can’t make basic reads should be very disconcerting to OSU fans.

by jtlight on Dec 7, 2009 10:33 AM PST up reply actions

i think it's frustrating, but it's not the end of the world...

i think because the expectations for pryor were so humungous coming in, everyone expected great things from him early. when you have guys like tebow and bradford winning heismans during their soph seasons, it’s easy to get into that ‘well why isn’t he producing crazy awesome numbers yet’ attitude? but honestly, most quarterbacks don’t fully adjust until their senior seasons. if you put vince young’s career next to pryor’s — up ’til this point, they are literally step for step.

also, you have to consider that ohio states offense was replacing it’s top two receivers from last year, one of the best running backs we’ve had in the jim tressel era in beanie, as well as 3/5 of our offensive line — gone. it’s not just him, the whole offense has to grow. next year is make or break, but at this point, i’m happy with the way the team as a whole has progressed.

Holy smokes ...

… post a comment, go work for a few hours, and see that you’ve launched a major debate (despite only rarely commenting on this site before). I think Matt Daddy and jtight captured it better than I did, in that I think Pryor has a lot of talent that is not fully appreciated in the OSU system, which is personified by Mr. Sweatervest. And I think Pryor is becoming a bit of a mental case because of it (I think you suggested somewhere in here that a lot of his issues are mental at this point). Maybe he gets better next year or the year after, but I think he would have been better served by the flexibility of the Oregon system and the coaching. And no, I would not expect him to admit any second thoughts. Maybe he doesn’t have any. But if he had redshirted a year and was our starter in 2011, I think he would have been better off in the long term than being thrust into the situation he is in with the Buckeyes.

In Pryor's defense

I think this is exactly why he would not have started for Oregon yet, (a la Darren Thomas), Pryor is still a developing talent, who has been thrown to the wolves so to speak. If he redshirts last year and is able to develop behind somebody like Masoli or Dennis Dixon, who knows what would happen.

Sure. He probably wanted to play at Oregon because it’s a fun offense for people. The ball gets tossed around, and defenses have a hard time keeping up.

But during his recruitment, he wasn’t even likely to be the starter. People were clamoring for Costa, and he was going to be the starter regardless. Pryor wasn’t likely going to make an immediate impact. Between that, the distance, and the spread offense/NFL bit… Oregon was probably last on his top 4 schools. We weren’t going to get him.

I know one person who's happy Terrelle Pryor chose tOSU:

Me. I wouldn’t trade Masoli for anyone.

But I wouldn’t rake Pryor or Tressel over the coals too much. At the time he made his choice, if he’s thinking NFL, I think he actually did make the right decision. And Tressel’s had an awful lot of success, a measurable amount more than Bellotti and Kelly have during his tOSU tenure. Maybe he is antiquated, maybe his sweater vest is lolworthy. and maybe tOSU has stumbled in BCS bowls the last few years.

Personally, I don’t think that means he needs to revamp his entire offensive schemes to accommodate his quarterback’s skill set.

I think we would have seen him at RB and slot this year. It would have been fun. Especially post-Blount.

Harper is an athlete that you want to have on the field and the ball in his hands. With a couple years at one position (Receiver, Running Back, Tight End), he would have been on the two deep for sure. I think he’s more physically gifted than most of our offensive skill positions. Him and Barner on kickoff returns would have been sick to see.

not a quarterback who operates a spread system. that’s why he chose ohio state.

These statements are not mutually exclusive. Look at McCoy or Bradford, both run a spread type of offense and both will have Heisman/ NFL attached to their names. I think Pryor’s decision was wrong, because he didn’t take into account a school that can enhance his abilities, not break him down to a style of QB he isn’t and struggles to be.

Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t trade Masoli for Pryor any day! but realize that D coordinators love a QB who struggles in certain areas, they can take that weakness and exploit it causing the offense to have to limit or change their gameplan. As long as Pryor continues to struggle going thru progressions and make the right read, continue to see D coordinators force him to make those decisions.

The thing that he was sold on was the fallacy that a spread QB can’t succeed in the NFL in addition to being a good passer.

I understand that he needed to work on his throwing mechanics and passing abilities. They were his weakest point in high school. But does Tressel and his coaches have the history of taking a QB and improving his mechanics? Rich Rod made something happen with Pat White’s passing. Joe Paterno has a long history of about everything.

I don’t blame him for his choice, and I think he could still turn things around for him, but personally I think he would have been better suited at a Penn State or Michigan for utilizing his abilities. Not Oregon or tOSU. But, really all those calls are still too early to make. He’s young, and still an underclassman. Hopefully he’ll be able to cram down some academics and thrive his last two years.

If Pryor ends up making it to the NFL as a QB, he will not regret it. Who would of thought Dixon would make it to the league before his senior season? Pryor is still young. Inefficient passers can’t take advantage of the Ducks weaknesses. Ducks D (and offense actually) thrives on a player thinking and hesitating as opposed to just playing.

Was in Vegas for CW, most of the guys at the sports books said the line should be Ducks -7 and won’t go down cuz even if tOSU fans bet it down, the rest of the nation will bet it right back up…

Big 10 fans are delusional

3. Ohio State is going to beat Oregon. I don’t know that it will be close. I am sure that LawBuck will have quite a bit more to say about this in the weeks ahead, but I think Oregon is in for a rude surprise. Ohio State will have the ball for more than 36 minutes, and will wear down the Ducks in the fourth quarter.

Yeah, but they scored a touchdown pretty much every time they had the ball. They kept the ball away from us effectively, and we scored 42 points. I feel really good about our defense’s ability to not give up 43 or more.

It is clearly impossible for Oregon to beat tOSU, its science. We are 0 and 7, fact! Think about this fact, the last time Oregon was in the Rose Bowl we lost to Penn St, Oregon clearly can not beat Big 10 teams in the Rose Bowl. But wait you say, go back further. OK, Oregon vs tOSU in the 50’s: Oregon looses, impossible for us to beat them. The sooner your can get your head around this type of analysis, the sooner you can work for ESPN.

And I really feel quite similar to what I felt in 1994 (even though I was a shell of the crazy Ducks fan I am now). This season is a a success, no matter if we win, although unlike against Penn State where we basically had no shot I think we will.

2001 on the other hand, was almost a letdown after the BCS screwed us. I would not have considered that season successful if we had lost the Fiesta and of course we did not.

I’m working at home today and College Football Live is on ESPN. They are doing a plays of the week segment. They first showed 2 different angles of Blount just TRUCKING Kristic. How perfect was it that at the beginning of the game they were doing that quick little profile on Kristic and talking about how “he likes to think of himself as the hardest hitter in the Pac 10”? They also showed LaMichael’s long TD run. I’d argue Masoli’s 4th down conversion was the biggest play of the game, but I can’t argue with either of these plays either I suppose.

Oh man....

If not for the last part of your comment, it would have been hilarious to think of the possibilities

Our collective lack of productivity has clearly paid off in the grandest of fashion. We are going to Pasadena. Yes, let that sink in. WE ARE GOING TO PASADENA. To be honest, this has not yet hit me-WE ARE GOING TO PASADENA. Wow.

I think that's the team that likes to "punt", whatever that is.

Whether he be met by rain, sleet, or DB's, the Maehlman always delivers.

Dont forget about the king of punt...

None other than Nebraska. Notre Dame is merely the prince of punt

Husky fans are so fucking hilarious

Listening to Softy at home: “We want Locker to come back and lead us to a Rose Bowl or even something bigger next year”

“or even something bigger?” Fucking douchebags we’re 0-12 last year and they’re thinking NC with a straight face?

No no no, not NC

If you stay at home and don’t go to a bowl game you get to watch ALL the bowl games. All Oregon gets to do this years is play in the Rose bowl. What about all those other New Years day games they are going to miss. Locker gets to lead the charge of Husky fans watching them all. Orange bowl, check, sugar bowl, check, crappy bowls nobody cares about, check. Damn you Locker, you have bested us again.

Does Locker play a bunch of defense too?

And O-line?

You wouldn’t know it from the fans. The percentage of Locker jerseys on gameday was definitely upwards of 90, probably upwards of 95.

they’d be lucky to be .500 next year w/ Locker. everyone in the Pac 10 is bring everyone back next year. i expect the standings to be similar to this year.

but we won a NC in 1991! we are relevant! look at how many more Rose Bowls we’ve been to than Oregon! they haven’t been since…uh…well…nevermind. they always collapse at the end of the year…what?…they dont do that anymore?! oh no…

now they're talking themselves into reasons why Locker will stay

“he’s not in it for the money” blah, blah, blah……………….

He may stay or he may not stay. I don’t really care. But listening to Washington fans beg is just gold.

so i’m confused. he will stay to help lead them back to prestige and an appearance in the Vegas Bowl for the pride of the state of Washington?

Sark is a good QB coach (i suppose) but he’s not better than the coaching he’ll get in the NFL. If you are a 1st round pick, you leave. Period. Especially as a QB, they pay you to practice and learn. he’ll be a top 20 pick prob and that’s what 10 mi guaranteed? Ask Sam Bradford.

Cue the graphics comparing Jim Harbaugh's Stanford record to Ty Willingham's.

But apart from those superstitious aspects, that hire would make perfect sense for both parties.

as long as he takes his ability to get Top 20 recruiting classes to Stanford, i’m good. Stanford usually has a good QB – Trent Edwards, etc but the rest of the team isnt good enough.

Saw a tweet from Moseley

That said Ethan Grant decommitted and is now committed to TCU. Sorry, I don’t have a link, just wanted to get that out there. Maybe someone can help me out with a link (unless this is old news and I’m just now catching up, which is totally possible).
