Pac-10 All Conference teams announced: Chip Kelly named COY, LaMichael James offensive freshman of the year

First off, Congratulations to Chip Kelly and LaMichael James, who were given great honors today. Coach Kelly was named the Pac-10 Coach of year, and he undoubtedly deserved it. After the debacle at Boise, Oregon rebounded and won the Pac-10 be two whole games. LaMichael James was named the offensive freshman of the year, setting the Pac-10 rushing record for freshman, and was the most explosive running back in the conference, if not nation.

Rounding out the Ducks on the all conference teams, Ed Dickson was named to the first team, while Jeremiah Masoli, LaMichael James, Will Tukuafu, and Casey Matthews were named to the second team.

I think what the voting for this award proves is that Oregon was by far the best team in the conference. It's pretty shocking that Oregon won the conference by two games, yet only got 5 players onto the all conference teams.

Meanwhile, OSU had 7 players on the first team alone, yet couldn't hang with Oregon in the 4th quarter. UCLA had four players on the first team defense, but had a worse defense than Oregon by almost any statistical measure.

While it would have been nice to see the individuals on the team recognized to a greater degree, Oregon gets to take home the ultimate prize: the Pac-10 championship.

Pac-10 Team of the Year

I’m kinda pissed for Masoli. He and Canfield had almost exactly the same stats by the end of the season (if you take into account Masoli’s missed game over UCLA), and account for the fact that Masoli moves the ball with his feet.

Masoli didn’t have the completion percentage, but that was partially a product of OSU’s short passing game.

To me, it comes down to which QB made the plays when the game was on the line. And apparently the Pac-10’s best QB is a guy who can’t hit a 15 yard out with his season on the line. Awesome.

I think I told you they’d skip over the running stats. Throw Masoli’s running stats out, and Canfield is 820 yards better.

by jtlight on Dec 7, 2009 2:09 PM PST up reply actions

Because QBs don’t run. Duh!

But speaking of runners…

LMJ is 1.47 yards/carry better than Quizz

LMJ was held under 100 twice as a starter, Quizz was held under 100 yards five times as a starter.

But Quizz is first team, LaMichael is second.

also, LMJ was “held” under 100 yards in games where he had 9 and 13 carries. Quizz was held under 100 when he had 20, 16, 17, 25, and 16 carries.

And you can’t use the, “Quizz carried the whole load excused.” He had more first teamers working with him!

LMJ is WAY more explosive than Quizz...

So of course nobody can shut down LMJ. You can bottle him up for a quarter, but he will break at least one off! Not to mention our O-line is VERY inexperienced (as is OSU’s)…I think LMJ deserves it more.

Oh well, I honestly don’t care about these individual accolades. I have a Rose Bowl to worry about instead

coaches vote based upon their own players and also reputation from the previous years. the awards are for 2009, not 08’, 07’ or 06’.

While the lack of recognition for some of players irritates me a bit, its a team game. And the BEST TEAM is going to the Rose Bowl. I think there is a double standard here though. The only reason you can say Quizz is ahead of LMJ for first team is if you add in his receiving yards. But if that is the case, add Masoli’s rushing yards to the equation. I don’t think you can have one on the first team without the other if that is how a voter would argue their case.

The road to Pasadena goes through Autzen...and the Ducks have punched their ticket to THE ROSE BOWL!!!!

He'll be engineering pain.

One needs quite a lot of engineering know-how to build a House of Spears

12 N. O. and two games up for Dome Field Advantage to be Super, not Metro!
The Ducks only had one all-conference player, but THERE AIN'T NO I IN ROSES!
Absolutely certain that either LSU-Ole Miss officials who didn't check to give LSU the full 0:03 they had and NU-UT officials who did check to give the Horns the 0:01 he had can't both be right.

I don't have a problem with Quizz over James

Think about who is voting, coaches. Most of the coaches have probably had to gameplan for Quizz more this year, than James. There is very little film on James, and when you think about Or St offense, you immediately think about how effective the Rodgers bros are, and what you have to do to slow them down. Besides, we all know its going to be James, Quizz 1 adn 2 next year.

I do have a problem with Canfield getting it over Masoli though. If you aren’t looking at James on film and trying to gameplan for him, you sure as hell are looking at Masoli. He is the key that turn the Oregon offense, and I don’t understand one bit how you can put Canfield over Masoli. If you’re going to cliam total offense, then why not Locker, if passing why not Foles… it doesn’t make sense to me. I think Masoli got jobbed by a “lets give it to the senior” mentality and that is crap. Lastly, I think in head to head Masoli seemed to be able to pick up the necessary 4th down not once but twice that was needed to win the game… Canfield, not so much.

I LaLove my Ducks. Best way to start a new decade imaginable... Oregon in the Rose Bowl January 1st!!!!!

Canfield getting it over Masoli is simply a joke. I really don't see how they can justify it.

Stats/numbers aren’t an end in themselves. They are supposed to be used as a broad indicator of who helped their team to win more. It’s about winning, remember? And if you can tell me with a straight face that Canfield accomplished more than Masoli, was more effective at getting his team to win than Masoli, was more significant than Masoli, I’ll give you an Oscar on the spot, or a discount coupon to get your eyes checked.

Ethan Grant

Rivals has taken Ethan Grant off Oregon’s commitment list. He is now listed as a TCU commitment. What’s up with that?

Apparently cancelling all of his visits after visiting us, and talking about how he was a Duck...

Did not mean that he was a Duck; or at least did not mean he was no longer looking around.

I must have mis-interpreted something…Oh well, recruiting can be a bitch sometimes

Our collective lack of productivity has clearly paid off in the grandest of fashion. We are going to Pasadena. Yes, let that sink in. WE ARE GOING TO PASADENA. To be honest, this has not yet hit me-WE ARE GOING TO PASADENA. Wow.

Juju, We applaud your devotion and pure decency throughout the season.

Man… this is heart breaking. I can only see on a few message boards, but it looks like he did decommit and commit to TCU.

This sucks! I was totally looking forward to our own Percy Harvin super star.

The muttering I can find is that he was promised immediate playing time at TCU, and he didn’t have that promise at Oregon.

It started with boise st.

It was a national perception that lingered in the background, and jcon and MCduck
were right . It stayed like an infection, even when the proper medicine was administered.
Crush cal and usc? Oh well, those teams are in a downspin anyway. yeah, thanks to the
beatdown we put on them. Then it was, now they go on the road, they could let down
against ucla or even wash. So when that failed to materialize, it was, well now that they’ve
been “exposed” by stanford, could ariz. st. be a letdown? Ariz,. same thing. And that’s why
maybe I’m in the minority that WANTED to see another blowout against oregon st. Our
own mistakes kept this from being a 2 TD win.

LunchFail U.

7 first teamers.. almost 1/3 of the first team all-conference is from one school.

And, off they go, to represent in beautiful Las Vegas.

“Mike Riley. Doing less with more” should be the new meme.
