Morning Quack Fix: 2.1.09 - Weekend Edition
There is some good news out there for Duck Fans. Not much if you are a basketball junkie but other stuff is looking just fine. For the basketball fans, keep your head up and know that spring is fast approaching.
- The O-Heroes Program is at it again. Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott, who easily has the best name in all of college athletics, helped collect 100 pairs of shoes for his home country of Kenya. Shadrack is ran on Oregon's distance medley relay team at the UW Indoor Invitational on Friday.
- Junior Neena Bryant was included in the 50-player USA Softball Preseason Player of the Year Watch List. The Oregon softball team opens play on Friday, February 6th.
- The RG has a story about John Dick, one of the few living members of the 1939 Basketball Championship team.
- Here's an interview with Adam Hall, a 4-star prospect who recently picked Arizona over Oregon and Cal. Apparently he was asked by Mike Bellotti "After all of this being said and done and what you know, why aren't you going to Arizona?" and he couldn't answer the question.
- The RG has a story about the UO Athletic Department changing the rules regarding general-admission seating at Autzen.
As always, if you find some other links, throw them in the thread below

I thought that was an interesting tactic that Bellotti took with Hall...
But like it as well. Each kid should go to where they are most comfortable, and the coaches should help that.

Truth
one of the things I really like about our style is that it is still about the kids. To the hardcore fan, they might look at Bellotti and go “WTFBBQ! Wut R u doing?! Nub!” but it makes sense. Why have a guy that isn’t committed to playing at Oregon? If he goes somewhere he doesn’t want to go, he will just be unhappy waste his time, waste the programs time and go through a lot of pain for no reason.

Autzen Stadium is where great teams go to die." - J. Brady McCullough, The Michigan Daily.
You have to wonder if Bellotti knew that UO was really out of the running
And he was making sure that the kid didn’t end up at Cal. Maybe there were no extra motives other than MB just being honest with him.

here’s a link to Moseley’s blog concerning the NFL Combine and which Ducks got invited. A certain defensive end didn’t get an invite

Even as a Beav
I’m surprised Reed didn’t get the invite. That kind of work ethic just screams “get a better look.” All these teams spend millions of dollars on scouting, and so many times they overlook what’s right in front of them. Reed will get his shot on a team. Just look at James Harrison of the Steelers: when from being cut 4 times in his NFL career, to starting in a Super Bowl, and pick sixing the longest play in Super Bowl history… Not bad

here's a problem that needs immediate attention
at least IMO. It’s not recruiting, or game schemes, any of that. I’ve come to the conclusion
that autzen should shut the gates to reentry once the 2nd half begins. It has griped me
for YEARS to see the stadium 30% still empty at kickoff time. Doesn’t matter who
we’re playing, or how vital the game, it never changes. Haltime is 20 minutes. What,
3 hours of tailgating before the game didn’t quite do it? Hell, it takes almost 10 minutes
alone to walk from a west side seat to the east exit! I have no issue with partying before
the game, that’s part of the fun. But you know the fans I’m speaking of, who leave with
no intention of returning to their seat by the 2nd half kickoff. And I doubt that the “5 minutes to kickoff” horn does much good.
If you happen to be one of those fans, just think of this: It’s the civil war game. Oregon
is locked in a tough game that will decide the pac 10 championship. The ducks come
out of the tunnel, and out onto a field… with 10,000 empty seats.
It’s time for those fans to get real.

A thousand times rec'd
From a completely different standpoint, I attribute the halftime drinking ritual to one of the reasons why marching band hasn’t been able to establish the connection with the fanbase that exists at most of the schools in the country. You don’t know how disappointing it is for the band to go work their asses off performing a halftime show to 25,000 fans, and then travel to other schools (Cal and UDub immediately come to mind) where the bands aren’t nearly as good both visually and musically, yet they’re rockstars in their stadiums. Hey Autzen crowd, stay and listen to your band. We’re really, really, good. Just ask any other marching band member who’s heard us perform, BYU, Cal, UDub, OS, WSU, OK St., Florida, and ASU, to name a few. And those are just the bands who have told me personally that we’re the best band they’ve heard.

for example,
Oregon State’s band isn’t very good. I know members, I like them, they’re nice people. They aren’t good in the marching band kid sense of the word good. But the student section still gets into that stupid first down thing they do. Fans in Autzen have no idea what the band is doing and if anyone tried to start any fan interaction (like athletics did this year) it’s met with disinterest and dies a quick death.

Hey we have the oldest dam band in the land
Doesn’t that count for something???
I will say this, I have commented on how much more “fun” the Oregon band has then our band. I went up to Gonzaga for a basketball game, and the guys were playing Funk music and pop hits with a band twist. It got everyone jazzed up.
Excuse the lame analogy, but the difference between OSU and Oregon’s bands reminds me of the difference between the two bands in “Drumline”

Unfortunately we haven't upgraded insturments or uniforms during that stretch...
That being said, I’d like to see some people throw some money their way. I mean, where are OUR space-aged outfits and bike helmets?!
Oh, and eff Gonzaga. Deep and hard. Go Pilots!
They’re for sale if you want one

It doesn’t help that it’s almost impossible to hear the band most of the time in Autzen anyway, unless you’re sitting within a couple sections.

No kidding. This is what I dislike the most about Autzen. Some fans have said “it’s not that big of a deal” or “I paid the money, I should be able to do what I want!”. Those people are asshats.

ok, vd, here we go again
“your band sucks”. yuk. yuk. Happy now? Takimoto, I will not be swayed by these
petty diversions. The task at hand is this: get autzen to close the gates when the 2nd
half begins. Announce this policy in advance of next season’s home opener, then DO
IT. I can almost guarantee ya, once is all it will take.
